Saying the league "stood to a team" is pretty much the definition of damning with faint praise.

Meaningless warmups stand to a team because they get benefit without the loss actually mattering. Nobody ever, ever says that the game "stood to them" if they lose in a competition that actually mattered.

dublin won the all ireland last year despite being pushed all the way by kildare and louth at home in the league and having to come from 7 points down against us at home to win by one , hardly championship form

football is different to hurling though , the likes of kerry and dublin wont really get competitive games until the group stage of the championship so games against them in march seemed to be merited , but derry beat realistically a dublin team missing five championship starters while donegal beat a strong armagh team in division 2 who are on par with derry

All well and good giving out about the keeper but those turnovers don't happen if the opposition's MF can't match Glass & Rogers like Donegal did, was a massive team effort from Donegal to target Derry where they're strongest

One swallow dosent make a summer and Derry will probably still go deep. They have already won back to back ulsters so not much to prove up north. Although being number 3 seeds could be tricky if they got caught in a tricky group like mayo did last year. I did feel last night they had the hand break on.

    Long live the Ulster Championship.

    A betting person's nightmare.

Donegal were just not going to be denied yesterday.

The result is two teams who have the potential to go all the way now. That's not the end of Derry I think.

Dont think I have ever seen Glass as anonymous in a game. He had no impact at all.

it showed f**k all , ulster is the big one, kerry didn't get out of 2nd gear , they went for it when they had too , no bother, leinster is Dubs and Connacht is which ever between Galway and Mayo decides to show up

He was fairly anonymous against Mayo in league game as well, albeit scored a point to settle then towards the end.

All the football played in the past couple of years catching up on him maybe.

Although being number 3 seeds could be tricky if they got caught in a tricky group like mayo did last year.

Mayo didn't get caught in a tricky group last year, Louth and Cork would not be regarded as tricky.

They just played s**t against Cork, surrendering a 6 point lead with about 15 minutes to go, had they won they would have topped the group having already beaten Kerry and Louth, and been straight into a Quarter final.

Instead they lost, came 3rd on the head to head with Cork and had to go the QF playoff stage and then meet Dublin.

No group should be regarded as tricky for Derry if they really are what they everyone seems to think they are.

Jason McGee has always done well on him, going back to their minor days.

The one where Donegal were murdering Oran Lynch.

I dunno, for as good as he was during Glen's run to glory, he has had a few quiet outings for Derry since he has emerged as the media's heir apparent to Fenton over the last couple of years (AI semi vs Mayo springs to mind too). Rogers has been more consistent the last while now, scored two yesterday when Derry were keeping with Donegal.

Don't buy the legs catching up with him either as he'd have a few years of professional conditioning under his belt.

Don't buy the hype around him really. Wouldn't lace Tohill's boots.

Regardless of going year by year on league performance Derry took a big blow IMO yesterday. I think the bubble is burst for them. Their game plan for the last 2 years involved the goal keeper heading into the opposition half. Big change required now. Mickey Harte was to bring the 3 All Ireland winning nous. That wasn't apparent yesterday.

Mayo 2019 were really well beaten by Dublin. They were nothing like their peak. Getting to the last 4 wasn't a particularly difficult task.

I dont see why they would change plans of using their keeper in the attack. There is a big difference between that and your keeper out under kick outs that are landing behind your own 65.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭Eibhir

There is. But the fear of turnover and the scars of yesterday will be there.

Every turnover the opposition will be looking for the goal opportunity straight away and Lynch is no Usain Bolt.

Dublin totally redesigned post 2014. But they had a year.

I'll put my hand up is wrong, but my opinion is Derry aren't AI contenders. They should have beaten a weakened Dublin 3 times in the league final. Dubs have players to return and hit championship at the pitch they always do.

He's played far too much football all year imo. Hard to be as mobile and effective in every game. He needs a rest.

For all the recent chat about attendances, Hyde Park looks wedged.

Good finish by O'Shea, Mayo 1-1 to 0-0.

Mayo keeper caught out the field, Mayo got numbers back though.

The level of fear in players to have a go at scoring a point from distance or closer to goal is ridiculous. Also to have a go when goalkeepers are on walkabout should be exploited at every opportunity, like what Donegal did yesterday.

    Well worked score by Roscommon.

What the f*ck was going on with the keeper going up the sideline and everyone else standing over the other side.

    Decent enough first half.

13,900 in attendance, not really earth shattering.

    Mayo pulling away now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,529 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

Roscommon are dire, going nowhere with Davy Burke. Mayo a bit better, but once again no All Ireland, they are not good enough.
