    It starts on Saturday.

I'm no fan of the very condensed championship season but it's what is there now and we have to deal with it, but it may change in time.

For me there are three teams ahead of the bunch , Dublin, Kerry and Derry.

Derry have improved under Harte and seem to be able to score much easier than they did last season.

Dublin are what we know they are and are obvious favourites

Kerry rely heavily on the Cliffords, especially David to get scores and as we saw in the 2023 final when he is not firing , neither are Kerry. But then again he usually is on song and is rarely injured.

After there is a chasing pack that could beat any of the above in a group game but it would take a lot to take them down in a knock out game.

Mayo have tightened up at the back but still don't have anything new to offer from the last two years where they were well beaten by Kerry and Dublin.

Galway rely too much on Walsh, Comer, Conroy and Kelly and have not kicked on since their 2022 final appearance, and don't look like they will.

Donegal could have more to them with McGuinness back, but that's more like a multi year project.

And Armagh will still have very good days mixed with very bad ones.

Either was one of the above will have to join the three stronger teams in the semi-finals if games go to form, who that will be could mainly be determined by the draw.

As for the make up of the 16 Sam Maguire teams, there is once again a situation where a Div 3 or Div 4 team will usurp a team that is promoted to Div 2 for a Sam Maguire place.

One of Clare, Tipp or Waterford will be in a Munster final and thus get at least a second seed in the group stages, and Down who contested the Div3 final would have to get to a Ulster final to get to the same spot.

Meath are in as they won the Tailteann Cup last year.
