Have been keeping an eye on this last while.

Also Russia has just started mass production of 3000kg ( 6000lb ) guided bombs that are sufficient to obliterate any European city. I think this is similar to the US MOAB bombs ( 18,700-lb guided bomb ), a mini version .. pretty much nuke effect without nukes.

Russia has begun using a powerful aerial bomb that has decimated Ukrainian defenses and tilted the balance on the front lines. It has done so by converting a basic Soviet-era weapon into a gliding bomb that can cause a crater fifteen meters wide.

The bomb is the FAB-1500, essentially a 1.5-tonne weapon of which nearly half comprises high explosives. It is delivered from above by fighter jets from a distance of some 60-70 kilometers, out of range of many Ukrainian air defenses. The FAB-1500 is another example of how Russia is fighting its war in Ukraine, inflicting massive destruction before trying to take territory.

“Why they are using the FAB-1500? Because the damage done by it is very serious. If you survive, you are guaranteed to have a contusion.”

“It puts a lot of pressure on soldiers’ morale. Not all of our guys can withstand it. While they are more or less used to the FAB-500 by now, but the FAB-1500 is hell.”

I fear we could see this war over alot quicker than we might think .. absolutely in favour of Russia. If they start using these massive guided bombs from afar Ukraine is in serious trouble and will be leveled + 10s of 1000s killed alot faster.

I would imagine this is where Ukraine needs these F16s .. NOW, not in a few months or the summer, they dont have that time

@saabsaab We were typing similar at the same time .. :D

Putin's family lives in Europe for protection from Russians and to have luxury. Take them hostage in exchange for the destruction of every one of those bombs. Could go even further and in exchange for withdrawal from Ukraine.

i read elsewhere that washington has stated that the f16s can only be used over ukraine

Yes that is a popular message.

Unfortunately its also a nonsense message.

Its not 1 collective financial pot. Its not the case that my underspend requires you to overspend.

But try explaining that to the googley eyed ranters who want something to be angry about, and shysters will happily supply.

Billybob dont wan hear bout no financial strucure. Pay ya own gad dam way.

Also the US hasn't had the expense of taking in hundreds of thousands of refugees from Ukraine. Not withstanding that, in % of GDP terms the US is certainly not contributing the most.

what do you think is better giving billions to refugees or giving billions to those on the frontline?

Considering one country signed the Budapest Memorandum and committed to defending Ukrainian interests and one country did not, I'd suggest that the ones honoring their promises is better.

Are there even any men left to press gang into military service in Ukraine?

    washingtonpost.com/world/2024/03/15/ukraine-village-mobilized-men-war

Last summer, Polina and her friend Olha were relaxing at a table outside the village store when Olha’s dad called and asked her to buy something for him there. She brushed off his request, saying she was busy with friends. He walked to the store himself instead, and the teens watched in horror as soldiers surrounded him and handed him a summons on the way in.

He has been serving ever since — and his daughter blames herself. “Olha thought it was her fault,” Polina said.

Can't even go down to the shops without being summoned for military service 😂

It's almost as if Ukraine has been invaded by an aggressive, larger country. Who don't really have very good internet trolls.

FFS .. this is crazy stuff. So we are back to oil as the root of it. Sickening

This war is being managed out of appeasement and fear. Its as if some in the west want this war to keep going and just keep it on life support rather than provide whats needed to finish it.

    Whats going on?

With such partners there is no need for enemies. Is that the message jake sullivan delivered when he was in kiev during week?

"One person said that the White House had grown increasingly frustrated by brazen Ukrainian drone attacks that have struck oil refineries, terminals, depots and storage facilities across Russia, hurting its oil production capacity - FT"

"We do not encourage or enable attacks inside of Russia", an NSC spokesperson adds

Ukraine is a sovereign state in a state of conflict with an aggressive invasive neighbour. They can do what they need to do repulse that invasion.

The USA have been helpful in supporting Ukraine. But the war is being waged by Ukraine as they see fit, and they're doing a damn good job with what they have.

Equally, it might concentrate minds in Washington if, without the aid and arms to fight Russia in their own country, Ukraine must resort to these drone attacks on the infrastructure. They can't have it both ways & Kyiv presumably highlighted this conundrum.

The US has let down Ukraine badly.

They will probably lose the war and it’s only the US fault.

We stand with Ukraine until the end.

BS promises and lies. They really have a lot of blood on their hands throughout history to the present day.

It isn't just the US. Europe could do a lot more but chooses not to. It is a lack of will, not means.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,159 ✭✭✭purplepanda

If the Americans don't wish to activate the $60billion military assistance package, Ukraine should carry on the drone attacks on Russian Oil infrastructure. Which are certainly justified due to Russian murderous attacks on Ukraines civilian population & infrastructure since the start of the conflict.

Maybe it's time for The EU to go totally on a war footing as is being discussed recently, that means stepping up military supplies & finance to cover the recent USA deficit.

Tankie vermin on the far left & hard right, Putin fanatics, communists, & other traitors against western civilisation will certainly be in total meltdown mode, however, for Europes future Ukraine HAS to win this conflict.

These gluide bombs are being launched from Ukraine territory just 60/70km from the frontline. It's shocking Ukraine still doesn't have the means to consistently stop this. This weapon is Russia's ace in the hole right now.

Mud season about to start hopefully that slows the Russians. I wonder if they're stupid enough to continue conducting armour attacks or will they stockpile tanks and APCS for a summer offensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 939 ✭✭✭wildefalcon

The Russians have been superb at asymmetrical warfare for the last twenty years, funding and supporting every contrarian fringe group and collection of useful idiots as part of their efforts to show division in the "West". And it's working.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

The American will is there, it's just that the bills to supply Ukraine are being intentionally held up by one side of its political system, one that's utterly in the thrall of a compromised, hyper-conservative group of ideologues, now overrun by a cult of personality. Whether they've been bought out by Moscow or just choose to side with Russia's "illiberal" system, the GOP would now rather tacitly support Russia than American's allies. Biden can't get around this, and we can't blame him entirely here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,967 ✭✭✭rogber

That's an absolute f*ckin disgrace if true. We know what US persuasion will involve: either do what we say or we stop cooperating militarily.

And of course American economic interests always take precedence over so called commitment to human rights and democracy .

There's a lot of worrying background noise around Ukraine right now, I hope much will turn out to be unfounded rumour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,844 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

But Biden knew there was a possibility of the next aid package being held up, he could have used lend lease before it expired, he choose not to.

He also has the power to give Ukraine surplus/obstacle stock, he's choosing not to.

    Where there's a will, there's a way.

Oil is always near the root of the problem. Isn’t that what fucked hitler, pushing to take the oilfields in the caucuses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,473 ✭✭✭Jinglejangle69

    The signs aren’t good.

Ukraine have done remarkably well considering their military capabilities but there is only so much they can do against a much bigger and powerful nuclear country.

They are been abandoned and in a way I hope the war arrives on the doorstep of all the cowardly leaders who have appeased Putin the whole way through.

on the day the US tells Ukraine to stop hitting russian energy infrastructure Ukraine suffers a heavy strike after only shooting down half of the missiles/drones fired at them and almost none of the ballistic missiles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭eoinbn

I am blaming Europe, not the US. The US could never be trusted - how can we not know that by now?! Half the country supports one of the most hideous humans on the planet and we are suppose to trust them?!

Once Mike Johnson was appointed it was clear what was going to happen, yet Europe sat and twiddled it's thumbs. Macron is now starting to panic as the writing is on the wall. Of course he will do literally nothing except talk big with no action.

As for the US getting annoyed about Ukraine hitting oil facilities... I did speculate on this thread that the timing might not have been a coincidence.
