Rogber, having lived in Russia for several years, I have a pretty fair idea how it works, and I will not be very surprised by anything that happens there, none the less, the fact that the mothers and wives managed to get even this far is something. There has not been any kind of organized protests for a long time, then we had the Bashkortostan protests (and they were pretty heavy, with the police having to run, with their vehicles been attacked. Next time, maybe the protesters will be armed, like Maidan??? ) And now these women protesting. We will see how it goes. Putin really has to clamp down now, or risk losing it, but the problem now is that the harder he clamps down, the more he is alienating people, and that goes especially for the republics.

Correction: Putin is the enemy of everyone, who is not in his immediate family. Everyone, no exceptions. And even with his own Family, I would not be surprised if he was keeping a close eye on them as well.....especially the Ex's. Have a quick look at how many of his top men, that he has killed off. Putin does not do friends.

If a large number of soldiers decided to down tools and head for Moscow, who's gona stop them if people know what is happening on the battlefield.

Your answer Padre lies here in this very recent poll: https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/politics/poll-over-a-third-of-irish-people-would-consider-voting-for-anti-immigrant-party/a291297867.html

And that third is only those who would consider voting for an 'anti immigrant party'. It does include the great many people, who have grave reservations over what is happening but who would still vote for FG / FF/ GR / Lab / SD / SF - all in favour of current arrangements.

So yes I believe my carefully curated view is widely held and that you are in a small privileged minority.

And you haven't read what I wrote, have you? I clearly stated that I have 'no problem with supporting the idea that we shelter genuine Ukrainian war refugees insofar as we can.' Which bit of that is unclear? Or contrary to what you say? Of course if and when Ukraine achieve full EU membership, they can move here and we there.

    I've countenanced it many times.

It's illegal, plain and simple, and the ECJ has already ruled on a similar case.

That means nearly 2 thirds wouldn't vote for such a party

To be fair, it's the worst people in this country suggesting it

Seems the noise around us being the weakest link security and military wise is getting louder,

At some point the government has to get their fingers and check books out and start spending on essential kit

Yeah pretty much it ,they cannot be forced to return to Ukraine from the top of my head we don't and many other EU states don't have recognised extradition agreements with Ukraine and Vice Versa either

But the fact they are all refugees means they cannot be returned or extradited..

What has Russia done against the Irish people ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,063 ✭✭✭macraignil

Hacked the HSE computers to cause millions of euros worth of damage and endanger Irish patients in hospitals, invaded another European country causing millions of people to need to take shelter in the EU from their indiscriminate attacks and terrorism, shipped weapons and mercenaries to a number of countries causing international unrest and security issues hindering trade and economic growth and development globally, stealing billions of euros worth of commercial aircraft many of which were registered in Ireland just to mention a few things that spring to mind.

Plus Russian State TV openly threatening Ireland's destruction as part of an attack on UK. Shows how much contempt they view us with.

Not to mention the time that the Russian embassy in Ireland applied for a huge expansion of its premises including an extensive underground complex, featuring power plant rooms and several rooms that were unmarked in the planning application.

    All totally above board...

Whatever about a land based army, we certainly need a much upgraded navy and multipurpose modern aircraft.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

    Nobody is invading us.

However, the EU and US should be funding our navy out the yingyang to protect offshore cables. Unless you want to go back to RTE 1 and Network 2 of course..

It has sent its submarines around the Irish Coast presumably mapping undersea cables, pipelines etc it has hacked government computers, (health board) and others, it has sent military aircraft into Irish airspace testing reaction times. The recent violent riots on the streets of Dublin, and the mayhem caused, this is the kind of activity that Putin encourages, and specializes in, including financing. Somewhere deep in the Kremlin, there are plans to invade or attack Ireland, if they ever needed to do that. Putin is not the friend of the west, any part of it, including Ireland. At some point in time. I'm sure that the extent of Russian interference and penetration into Ireland and Irish society, will become known in time, and people will be horrified. Putin's tentacles reach all over the world, with the exception of very few Countries. Putin is a modern monster.

I see the free-riding which passes for defence policy in Ireland is alive and well.

According to an " influential thinktank"!!! It's more like a void space.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,897 ✭✭✭scottser

There's an article in the guardian about some new Tory funded report arguing that we are the weak link in European security, calling for increased UK military preparation up North. Unless we take control of it, others will make those decisions for us.

Ye are nuts,if Russia ever goes as far as invading Ireland there will possibly be a nuclear war involved so Ireland spending a few billion on defense is irrelevant, it's irrelevant if anyone decides to invade Ireland, nuclear or not,we might gain an hour, spend it on hospitals.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,213 ✭✭✭jmreire

The most important word in your post is LARGE, and the next important words would be HEAVILY ARMED. Something like what Prigozhin did. Other than that, it will be the Silovicki, or possibly the Oligarchs who might pull the plug on Putin. As for large contingents leaving the front lines and fighting their way to the Kremlin? I don't know,,Putin /Shoigu have built many preventative / defensive road blocks into the system. Would be the greatest thing to see though.

If this is an indication of how Russia treate Ukrainians is really a form of genocide. It may not involve direct mass murder (unlike Bucha) but it's an attempt to eraise Ukraine from the map.

I wonder what PBP thinks of this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

Look where spending billions on hospitals and health care has gotten us , endless waiting lists and the Never ending Saga of trolleys in corridors,

We need the ability to defend hospitals and other vital infrastructure, it should be done hand in hand,

We can't keep ignoring the notion of being completely defenceless

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,100 ✭✭✭✭briany

Yes, but if the Irish defence situation has been basically the same for a hundred years, ie a neutral country with a sparsely equipped defence force, it stands to reason that Irish governments have been content with that, so it's probably not going to change any time soon, even with the potential for espionage because espionage is very much not a new phenomenon.

And presumably the UK and other allies must be content with it as well because in that time they've not really told Ireland to f off and police its own skies and waters.

I say 'content' rather than 'happy' as maybe the sides concerned would prefer a defensively independent Ireland but there just doesn't seem to be the will to make that happen. 🤷

Seriously,we have 7 navy ships and crew for one but you think hospitals are a waste of money, cop on,we don't have enough people interested in our defense forces,we don't have enough people full stop for your " visions" of our possible future conflicts, either way wrong thread but you started this nonsense, thankfully our geographical location and whether people want to admit it or not that part of this island is uk ( to be honest I think if it wasn't would matter as they would use us as their front line if it came to it so defend us ) **** it,I am wrong, close all the hospitals,no more waiting lists, divert the full healthcare budget, stop that waste of money, can you tell me one nation who would possibly attack us we could delay, not a mind keep from invading with that extra funding? hopefully the conquerors would take any injured people to their hospitals.

We don't even have the capacity to detect a lone boat sailing close to the shores, the same lone boat can launch an AliExpress drone armed with an explosive and flying right around the country undetected and then hit some vital target like a power station. We wouldn't have a flippling clue until it happens.

Absolutely no way some anti EU/West terrorist group wouldn't see us as an easy target to disrupt the EU/West? If we had a major catastrophic blackout we would need massive EU intervention and aid. Cutting undersea cables, both data and power by some foreign actor can go unpunished as we would have no clue who done it as we have no radar etc....

Other countries who have a military and navy that can defend themselves also do have hospitals. It's not a this or that option.
