But I would really really like my 15c back ,,, so what are my options..

I'll tell you what I'd do.

I'd take the can home and try it in another machine next time I'm passing.

It's a bit prosaic but then who ever said recycling was a stimulating enjoyable past time.

The rate is 58% of PET bottles and aluminium cans.

Denmark has a rate of 93%

That's a huge difference. Many of the unrecyled bottles are on our beaches, parks, and hills.

It also leads to far superior recycling and reuse/repurpose will be far superior too.

To go into the shop and say the RVM ate my can.

If you put money in a vending machine and the crisps don’t fall, are you allowed take a sledgehammer to it? You really want the crisps

Re-turn are selling the materials back to the producers to be re-used as plastic for bottles and aluminium for cans. The materials will absolutely be recycled and getting first refusal to purchase the materials was a key ask by producers in setting up the scheme.

its the latter, unfortunately re-turn just sell them on. i was disappointed by this and the scheme itself feels like even more of a con now.

re-turn have no intention of actually recycling the cans themself whatsoever, they're intention is to sell them for more revenue to fund itself. "Re-turn will collect the returned bottles and cans and sell them to industry so it will also have revenue from that source."

    As seen here : https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/deposit-drink-return-repeat-how-the-new-plastic-bottle-and-can-recycling-scheme-will-work/a352130529.html

They just want the quick easy money cash grab recyclables and to up their recycling stats at your expense.

1 label on the shelf not 2, unless they specify on the shelf or at point of sale/the counter (which is what their receipt does anyway).

it would be against the law for them to charge a different price than is written on the shelf (unless they have a sign near the point-of-sale) the same would be like simular to how sugar tax is written in the small print currently as a disclaimer.

it's also possible for them to have the non-eligible can's being sold on a different self or section entirely. it all comes down to whether the barcodes will be same or different. And going by what people are saying about the scheme is that the newer products will have updated barcodes, meaning the shops system will register these as 2 different items entered into the system (with simular names).

For all cans? Like think about it practically.

theyre going to have to have two separate areas for every Fanta can, coke can, Dr Pepper, sprite, 7up. The same with bottle.

Im sure they’re legally allowed do it. Seems a lot of effort for 15c per container they have left, don’t you think?

There is no stated recycling target.

90% have to be collected by 2030, by then what is collected must be made from 25% recyclable material.

We have no idea what our collecting stats are now, or what percentage of these things already contain recycled material. Or maybe we do.

If our collection rate was 78% by 2026 we are actually exempt from the scheme under the EU rules.

Cans are not part of the scheme, they were added because they are high value trash.

I use a small backpack, on a bus and train. 0%. Chance of cans not being crushed a bit, especially if it’s full

Can they use a sledgehammer tho? Obviously not. So why does the poster above suggest using a sledgehammer on an RVM?

Obviously they're not serious and nor am I regarding a sledgehammer and a vending machine.

You phone the Ciaran Foley lad in Return and you burn his ears and demand he collect your can and refund you. It's his baby.

Yeah, or you could see it as the joke it was meant to be.

Joe just advertised that he'll be discussing it again. Apparently a caller/retailer is going to discuss being forced to advertise their competitors unless they invest in an RVM

2 things i need to say responding to this.

regarding the first part of what you said: not 2 seperate area's for each and every can, just 1 area for the cans that have the logo, and a different area for cans that do not have the return logo. its even possible for them to be in the same area, or if they're feeling lazy have them all thrown in together lol.

in regards to the last part, a person would be surprised at the lengths some shops go to to make a bit extra or to make it inconvient for the customer to see the proper price. it might seem like 15 cent to some, but in the shops eyes its a bulk number as all those 15cs add up. An example (not can related example, price related trickery i mean) Today i was in a shop and seen someone infront of me buying a small mini-block of ice-cream, the place they got it from said "rasberry ripple special offer €2" however there was only vanilla blocks left there and no price tag for them written, so the person assumed they was 2 also, then got charged 3 something, close to 4 quid. Person goes out from behind the counter to check the price and comes back to the customer telling them they're wrong and it's rasbery thats 2 quid. Customer should have refused to buy it, i know i would have. Inconvience things like this, some people don't bother arguing over it and following it up, or don't care and still want the item that they would not have bought if it was'nt looking like it was on offer. i seen it happen with crisps a week ago too.

Today i seen it again, all the bottles gone up 25c. i asked a worker about it and they said to me "it's in preparation of the new bottle recycling scheme, that thing you seen at the doorway when you walked in" i asked "yeah but howcome the extra is being charged before it goes live? these bottles don't have the return logo on them and will be rejected by the machine" he says back to me "don't worry we'll have another bin brought out beside it for rejected bottled" i said "yeah but you're still charging extra for bottles that won't be accepted" he then was saying something about shelves and another worker cut him off mid sentance, did'nt get to hear what he was trying to respond with, all i could here was "AH HERE DON'T YOU BE TELLING HIM ABOUT THAT, THAT THING'S NOT LIVE YET", he tried to say something else to the other worker and was talked over quickly with "if he wants to know he can wait, don't be saying nothing about our prices, and don't be going and tell'in him anything"

I would give the CEO if re-turn much kudos if he came on Liveline today. Yesterday there were some valid points made, but also a good few points exaggerated or mis-stated. I say that as someone who opposed re-turn, there were points like 'retailers get 3c per can' (not 2.2c), and that there was no option but an RVM (no mention of manual option, etc). They need someone on there giving their side.

I don't think this is the sort of media re-turn would want, it's easier to control a soft interview with Claire Byrne than engagement with consumers live on air. In any event they don't need to bring people along, this is being imposed on consumers.

If they also added a container nearby for rejected cans they could recycle them via another company if needed as your not bringing them home or looking elsewhere to dump them..

As cans are getting recycled or reusing them they are not littering the streets or other places.

If I was his pr advisor I'd recommend that he book a round of golf for this afternoon.

He'd be on a hiding to nothing going on Liveline.

And I say that as a fan of the programme.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,049 ✭✭✭TokTik

And the tax people have paid on these cans? Just screw the consumer?? A very Irish idea

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,922 ✭✭✭✭elperello

I doubt they will provide such a bin during the transition period because it could become a dumping place for non Return cans.

Also until NI introduce a deposit system this issue would likely continue especially in border areas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,968 ✭✭✭greasepalm

But would that matter as the can was rejected by the machine and could go into another general recycling bin or are you walking into the store to shop and hope they take it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭howiya

If a store has a machine they won't be taking the can from you if you walk into the store to shop. Its either automated or manual returns not both and as discussed earlier in thread very few places will be doing manual returns.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,063 ✭✭✭BoardsBottler

The cans can't be re-used. Not only that but its throwing away free money. They'll sell them. But its a bit of a cheek them wanting free cans/bottles if the machine rejects them. i'd rather try again or take them to another machine. Its not only losing deposit, but its also giving them a free can. Too cheeky. it feels like they're putting the hand out and still wanting it even if machine gives you no deposit.

for every 1 ton of cans, they can get €1000 free! or €1 for every kilogram (58-65 cans)

Sorry I didn't make it clear enough.

It would be a good idea to provide a bin to hold reject cans.

But as long as there are large numbers of non deposit cans around the shop could end up having them left in the bin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,968 ✭✭✭greasepalm

But is that not the point as machine rejected it and the mass can be put into the other bin with non labelled ones so they are getting out of the car parks and bushes , the same as when going down to use Balyogan or Green wheelie bin.

Some carparks have multiple glass bins , clothes bins and cans so you dump them in there as a choice.?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,922 ✭✭✭✭elperello

I don't think the shops will want to take responsibility for non Return cans.

What is the point of this if the cans can't be reused?
