Potential for there to be 8 and 7 darters also!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,188 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

They should try it for a week or two during the premier league, might actually make it interesting and worth watching!

There had only been one 9 darter in a world championship and very few on tv before 2001. And 3 dart averages over 100 didn't happen all too often.

Barry Hearn takes over the PDC in July 2001....

if you add a Quad, you'd also have to move to 651 or 701 no?

Maybe, the game in that video was 501 tho.

    There's no problem with darts.

It's a mental game. It's nowhere near a "solved" game.

The scoring area of the segments are bigger because of the thinner wires and no staples.

I took a look at old PDC matches on YouTube and it looks as if the new board technology came into play in the late 90's although the wires have become thinner again since then.

The crowd is well back in darts

Pressure maybe not quite the same as snooker

Humphries for the win anyhow probably

I didn’t say that it was a solved game but it is an interesting theory brought forward by AJ.

There was plenty dross in the early rounds of this tournament... it's not like you have 96 players averaging 100+ on a regular basis. And it's only 24 hours ago that people were saying the standard was poor this year - a couple of cracking semi-final performances later and we've solved the game 😀

Q School also founded in 2011 giving a much more linear progression for players into the pro game, also lead massive leaps in standardised coaching etc, not to mention the removal of alcohol from the stage, that had to add another few points to the averages (or maybe nit).

Have a feeling Littler will win it well

MVG had a big semi final win last year and lost the final, same could happen with Humphries

In fairness any changes to the difficulty of a sport tend to be because of what the very best players are doing (whether that be Tiger Woods, Pete Sampras or Steve Backley in the examples I came up with earlier), not because of what the lesser players are doing.

I just had a theory that's it's trending to a future point where there'll be players for whom 12 dart legs is the norm, but no-one seems to agree. Which is grand. On with t'darts.

Nothing against Littler but Sky are the ones to blame for rubbing his success in everyone's faces thus people turning against him in a way

It's like his opponents never existed in Sky's eyes

They did the same to Sherrock, turned a lot of people against her because of the perceived advantages she was given.

It's not Littler's fault he's getting so much media coverage, he even said himself that he doesn't like it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,184 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

    Did ya know he's only 16 , only 16

If ya got a euro for everytime that was mentioned you'd be rich

If Humphries wins, with all the hysteria around his opponent, yet all the pressure on him as the new world number 1, it will be a phenomenal achievement.

    Humphries 7-5 Littler for me.

There's nothing interesting about that theory. If they want to make it harder, they can make the bed sizes smaller to better reflect something from years ago. There's no need. Darts is exciting, why reduce he higher scores and big checkouts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,187 ✭✭✭bren2001

Humphries has shown he can do it consistently this year. I'd be stunned if he doesn't turn up tonight but be may not be as good as last night.

What Littler will turn up tonight is fascinating. Can he produce something like Humphries did last night? Can he handle the pressure?

All I know is that I'm up for Luke.

    (Littler)

I'm definitely in the Humphries corner tonight. Mostly for the reason that Humphries may not get a better shot at a world title whereas Littler looks to have the potential to bag a whole pile of them

Fancy Humphries he's been the best player in the world for the last while. Has the experience of winning multiple majors on TV. Finally seems to have hit top gear in his last two games. I don't expect Littler to choke or anything but at times he left checkouts on the board I expect Humphries will take. 7 4 Humphries I think.

Wonder did PDC/Sky pull a stroke with the PL to have this tonight when there is no football on? They managed to get the semi's on last night when the only PL game was a dire match between West Ham and Brighton

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,187 ✭✭✭bren2001

Sky have some control over the football schedule. I'm sure the PDC and Sky work together to maximize eyeballs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,187 ✭✭✭bren2001

Could be Littlers only final. No idea how he will handle the fame, the money, and the schedule. Lots of travel and being away from your family.

In a more extreme case, he could fall into drugs or anything.

(in my best Damon Killian voice)

    It's... SHOWTIME!

Should be a great final even with all the OTT Sky hype around Littler.

Personally I think/hope he does it (even if Mardle will lose his mind). He's been on point every time he's needed to be and will go far either way.

Plus, unpopular as this may be around here!, I just cannot warm up to Humphries!

Sigh. AJ put forward a theory that in 20 years, 50 years, 100 years, whatever, that because everyone will be at a certain level, the excitement won't be there, because everyone will always take out their game in 12 darts and therefore the only way to beat them will be to throw 9s. Therefore taking the excitement out of it because everyone will be throwing 12 darters all the time.

I personally disagree, while players will undoubtedly get better and better, i think there will always be a human element and the crowd will always probably have a factor.

If you don't find it interesting that's absolutely fine, just a bit of a conversation on a forum yeah? Anyway, onto the final.
