Time to start engraving "Luke" into the Sid Waddell Trophy; and then add-in Littler or the new world number one Humphries afterwards.

Incredible quality of darts tonight. Second highest set of semi final averages after 2017 (MVG/Barney/Anderson/Wright), when the numbers were absolutely insane.

Close to 110 average and multiple 100+ finishes over 6 sets. A bit more than playing well I'd say

Very enjoyable tournament . Gutted back to work tomoro night for final but phone wil be close by . I think it could be an absolute cracker of a final .

Imagine engraving the trophy for LL and and doing a H instead of an L for his surname?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,804 ✭✭✭bren2001

It's close to double the odds (60%). Put a tener on each, the return is 6.50 or 11. Big difference there.

Minor would be both less then evens. It's from PP, they're all gonna be similar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,755 ✭✭✭lbunnae

pretty tight for a darts match imo. I’d guess 85% of the match’s plus would be larger gap in odds this tournament. Bit pedantic anyway. 8/11 , 11/10 now. Falls under the fairly minor bracket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,804 ✭✭✭bren2001

That's an odd definition of minor but does matter?

Certainly doesn’t matter. That’s for sure haha , Who do you think will win yourself? I’m going to pick Littler, I think he’s on a wave and will ride it out. I know that probably sounds silly when Humphries wave is 18 match’s in a row.

Most ridiculous comment ever, hopefully you retire from Boards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,804 ✭✭✭bren2001

I think Hunphries will win. Looked unbeatable today. I think Littlers leaves too many big checkouts on the board that Humphries will take.

    I want Littlers to win.

I don't enjoy watching LH like several others but you can enjoy him for the next few months in the PL if you wish.

Littler is on everything right now

Did Barry Hearn Hearn do anything to change the boards and make them easier

I'm always suspicious of him around snooker and darts that he's manipulating things

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,755 ✭✭✭lbunnae

Huh? Are you asking if Barry Hearn has changed the dart boards to make it easier for Littler but not his opponents? Haha

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51 ✭✭mikewebber

    No the boards in general

I've nothing against the man but he's profit oriented

The snooker tables are easier these days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭acceletor

For the final i see it

    5/4 Littler v 4/5 Humphries. Draw about 5/1(😁)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,590 ✭✭✭NinjaTruncs

What! you haven't noticed them switching out the boards each time Littler steps up to throw, it's been very obvious!! /s

This place is mad at times, just because he's young he can't be good and of course he's going to be everywhere, he's the current underdog story, every news site will want to cover the 16 year-old who's crushing his competition.

Nothing to do with Barry Hearne but the treble/double/bull areas are significantly bigger now than in the 80's and 90's because the board technology has improved which has resulted in thinner wires and no staples holding the wires in. There's no doubt that this has contributed to the massive averages we get these days. There's no way of knowing what averages the likes of Bristow, Lowe, Wilson etc would hit on todays boards but I'd expect they'd be hitting ton+ averages regularly.

Tonight's final is dependent on the crowd, if they get on Humphries back then Littler wins. If they are reasonably respectful then Humphries wins.

The wire is thinner than it was, and is less obtrusive. The segment sizes are no different so it's only a marginal gain, although has definitely made the bullseye an easier target than it was 'back in the day'. The cork of the board is better as well, you rarely see it completely cutting up. This helps scoring.

I don't see any of that as 'cheating' though, just a natural progression of technology.

(Snooker the same - pocket sizes haven't changed but cushion/cloth quality has greatly improved. Is this natural progression or Barry Hearn cheating?)

    Thanks for the explanation

    I've a bit of a barry hearn obsession 😁

    Thoughts

I love me darts but it's close to a solved game isn't it? In a way that few other sports are.

In team sports (rugby, soccer, gaa) there is always scope for new tactics. In other head to head sports (tennis, golf, snooker) there is always scope for new ways of approaching situations.

So in the absence of any potential tactical innovations, is it just a case of how much better the darts players get? Is it naturally heading to a stage in 30/50 years where the player with throw is expected to always go out in 12 darts, and thus can only be beaten by a 9 darter. Does it risk becoming a bit boring, a bit like archery/shooting in the Olympics where they hit the target 19 times out 20 and it's only the one mistake that matters?

There are pots going in on the snooker tables now that have no right to go in. I've played on professional table before the hearn era and there was no room for error on anything near a cushion. Now then are hitting near cushion and going in.

A minimum of 36 perfect throws is hard, nigh on impossible, to do that at least 98 times in the final would be nothing short of a miracle, the misses are the drama.

I think you’ll always gave the human element - i.e Mvg probably beats Williams 95 times out of 100 but somehow loses in a best of 9 game. While taking nothing away from Williams, it’s pretty inexplicable that he won really.

Although i guess that’s what you are saying, that in the coming years the human element will become less affective of the result as players get better.

Other big factor i see is the crowd, they can have an enormous affect on players as we’ve seen with Gerwyn Price.

Move the Oche back if it gets to that stage. Or move it around for each leg/set!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,999 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

    Yeah, all this really.

I'm not saying the game is imminently going this way, but it seems to me there's an inevitable point that going out in 12 darts will become the norm for the ever-improving top players. At which stage (which is still maybe 2 generations away) the game becomes just about the misses - nerves, crowd, whatever. But if you have enough top players who aren't affected as such, then the game would need to re-adjust. What that re-adjustment would be I don't know (higher board, longer oche, smaller segments, 2 darts instead of 3 are all possibles that occur to me).

To an extent other sports have faced this. Examples off the top of my head would be golf has limited technological advances in ball/club to stop 400yd drives that destroyed courses whilst simultaneously making courses longer/trickier - tennis changed the ball makeup to stop it becoming a relentless serve/volley 3 shot game - javelin changed the equipment to stop people being able to throw it into the stands.

All just random musings before the Lukes battle.

Have been thinking for a long time that the PDC are missing a trick by not running a tournament with a ‘quadruple’ board. Would be very interesting and a potential future solution to the problem you are describing!
