    I’ve never felt that way before. And if thats the case then you’d feel that way driving behind any pre 2009 diesel car?

    It's really easy to spot most DPF defeated cars, puff of black smoke on acceleration. However it has to be said that a diesel in good health will have no such puff DPF or not. The reason why many DPFs fail is because the diesel engine has failed in some other way and is running to rich or has blow by issues. A healthy diesel has minimal smoke beyond start up.

    So there is a high likelihood that someone going to the trouble and expense if getting their DPF removed has already got a fucked engine and as soon as the DPF is gone it will smoke like hell.

    It's a real significant problem for me as I am looking for a donor van for camper conversion and I will have to go back to around 2007 to find one without DPF installed. This is challenging to say the least. My current transporter has opacity so low that it is barely detectable and has no DPF or EGR. It only smokes on cold start.

    Diesels are a dirty bollix of a vehicle all of them. And I have 2. Obnoxious fume machines. You can spot dpf removal a mile of the smell the catch in your mouth. Yak.

    DPF filters are in place for a reason.

    My mondeo was a dirty b1tch from the factory emissions based tax €400 per year. Don't think removing the DPF has made it much less dirty and the tailpipe was always black.

    I've had friends of mine drive behind and let me know if there's any smell when I'm cruising, moving away or just flooring it. They said there was no smell, and she pulls lovely and engine sounds beautiful, almost as if there's less stress on it

    "Emissions" is not a blanket term for everything coming out the exhaust.

    Tax is only based on Co2, but that's a small part of the whole picture. Tuning an engine to be clean is all about trade offs between Co2, Co, HC, NOx etc...

    As Co2 is not a pollutant, rather a greenhouse gas. Your mondeo was probably better then most in terms of the really nasty stuff. You've undone that now so it really is proper polluting, both nasty stuff thats harmful to life and greenhouse gasses.

    Pity the NCT text for diesel exhaust is so antiquated, pretty much any engine will pass it. Hopefully changes sooner rather than later.

    And that is because most DPF deleted cars also deleted the catalytic converter. And on top of that the engine probably runs dirtier than it should, which is the cause of DPF getting blocked in the first place.

    Absolutely no one removes the catalytic converter during a DPF removal

    Except when it's a single unit which is the case for most new-ish cars.
