This “ ‘I got whooped by GOD in a hoodie” - apparently as relayed by the late Sinead O Connor to him- is bizarre to say the least. So if I interpret it correctly - GOD is all goodness and He whoops people for good reasons so that when you recover it is because you go on to something better , hence the Virgin radio contract. The GOD, in this case, was RTE and the whop over the head he got was his failure to negotiate a successful contract with RTE .

can the man not leave well enough alone and look forward only - at least for the foreseeable future. I wonder if these ‘puff’ pieces / statements/angles/ opinions are made up for him to take on board? Is it possible that he is provided with all these tools but he is pulling them out a the wrong time?

Hurling being vomitting is more an american euphemism. Best Tubs can hope for in the UK is for people to just go "Huh?".

If he said he was in the premiership now, that might make some bit of sense.

I could not give 2 💩's about Tubs. Now that he has gone, I hope I won't read or hear too much about him.

He has also just pissed off a lot of RTE staff as he proven he did not need RTE to pay him big bucks to stop him moving to another broadcaster.

It will be interesting to see how he copes with a show that is music based with very little chat.

He also won't be able to ask on air for his freebies and he will have to get used to that.

Sounds like you give a lot more than 2, Skimps.

Not at all, just glad he is sorted so that we don't have to hear the latest bluster and spin that his agent spoon feeds the media.

Virgin Radio may have somewhat of a younger demographic than Tubridy's RTE1 demographic. The guy he's replacing, Eddy Temple-Morris, seems to be far more clueful on music and movies. There might be a slight cultural disconnect between Tubridy and the Virgin Radio listeners. Don't think that they will be Tony Bennett fans.

IMO the senior hurling final quote is a political quote that some Irish people hold on to and keep saying it long past its sell by date. ... 16 years ago at this point :/

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Yeah. This is important. There's a format he must fit into. Not the other way round. Half hour music sweeps, speed links etc.

He might get one slightly longer segment per day to make some content for their social media.

I think we can take it that the Virgin Radio listeners don't put it on to hear some unknown Mick shite on about books, kindness and Jelly Beans.

He will be sandwiched between Chris Evans Breakfast show and Jayne Middlemiss Afternoon show that is like two of the 90's to the late 00's Big Breakfast, Loaded, FHM, Love Island etc UK Lad culture mainstays right there.

Ryan Tubrity the radio host sticks like a sore thumb between them and with a lot of there hosts on Virgin Radio he just doesn't seem to fit.

Maybe Virgin are trying something different and maybe a few friends helped pull a few strings to help him out.

Evan's has always had a good relationship with Irish acts it was him who gave Zig & Zag their UK break in the 90's

    The guy struggles with this...

...and he can negotiate a €500k pa pay deal for himself?

She's the brains and he's the prawn? :) There seems to be a distinct lack of negotiating ability in RTE when it comes the "talent".

Well the chat part was never exactly his forte. I assume he won't have a team of researchers with him to furnish him with prompt cards with the questions on it.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

Can’t help but think this is an effort to catch the Irish market and make a few more Bob - primarily though I wonder how a currently unknown Irish presenter will go down in the UK ?

He’s not Norton; nor of course is he Wogan; he could majorly mess this up with just the wrong tone or spouting rubbish about some news story -it’s a curiosity about a guy who’s known for literally nothing bar trying to pretend he’s Mr. Christmas for one night a year - it’s actually quite a poor reflection on his term at RTÉ - Kenny was The Plank, yes, but he was and is a bloody good current affairs presenter and brilliant on radio; Tubridy is much better on radio than TV but he’s so “light” on radio - I just don’t know what he could possibly bring to a show bar whatever anyone who’s born and reared in Ireland could bring- an Irish accent.

I know. Im saying asking questions and chat with celebs was not his forte, so its just as well its a music format.

All I can do is quote the bit from the article I posted yesterday

‘Ray will sell himself as being primarily a radio star and that’s what he came to RTÉ to do,’ said the agent who represents some of Ireland’s top talent.

It may be the case there's no agent now, but can you imagine the conversation:-

We want huge money for Ray

He's a bit sh!t on the buttons and he hasn't had a sponsor for 4 years

Yeah, but we'll go else where otherwise

    Ok, see ya, bye

They're dying to get rid - It was a huge mistake

Well when his contract is up for renewal, RTE can just not renew it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,830 ✭✭✭DebDynamite

Especially as well when he’s replacing Eddie Temple Morris, who was an MTV VJ around the same time you mentioned when Evans and Middlemiss were at their peak. He’d be a real music head as well - indie, dance… Definitely not replacing like for like anyway!

It has to be a genuine attempt by virgin to test the syndicate model of broadcasting in Ireland from the UK. Costs. Controversy sells and Tubs has that in spades right now. Q102 won't be expected to have a large audience, just grow an audience share and prove the concept can work. Tubs is an experiment.

Never listened to him, probably won't in future. RTE will be delighted he is away. They can say the problem is gone and we can all forget about the rest of the mess. Send on the millions.

I've said here before, Tubs was just the tip of the iceberg and not the real problem. There is zero corporate governance in RTE as it's not their money and they don't need to balance any books. Nothing has changed except the problem child has moved away.

Or get Oliver Callan to mimic him. Who'd notice? :)

Wonder what he and all the other people's jobs he's replacing think of Tubs right now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,372 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    I disagree.

My interpretation is that he was saying rte and ireland was small fry stuff, he's now going to be a top presenter on a London radio station and he's finally made it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,981 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

Your interpretation is closer to my own to be honest.

That was an all encompassing comment, Q102 and the weekend stuff on multiple stations

Considering how some on here were saying he’d never get a job in the UK and that jobs like that were only for “big name” types it would, indeed, seem that he was correct to imply that he’s now in the “big leagues”.

Might be a good angle for a story for an Irish newspaper. Good journos are always looking for a local angle when it comes to this type of story.

He will want to watch making gaffs such as “Ukrainians look like us (therefore it seems close to home)” and using too many references to his Irish persona… eg “I’m known as the Toyman in Ireland”’ or he’ll sell himself to audience there as the real life Alan Partridge.
