Also it's a bit of a hike from both Luas stops to Dundrum SC.

I guess the logic is that there's 6 bus routes (87/88, 74, A2, A4, L33 and L25) and a Luas going past Dundrum SC. So you can hop on any of these to change to an orbital route.

I'm sure they've thought everything through.

It's a complex job but they've been thinking about it since 2017 and are only implementing now.

I think if they could do contactless payment it would help a lot. Dublin's choked with traffic and buses are the only option for the foreseeable future.

Yes. I do think they have read Dundrum interchange as a valid stop for DTC.

The only positive there is for the old village, as the businesses there should get more foot traffic passing through the village in both directions.

But I would expect to see an uplift in car journeys into the centre as a result overall. I dont know if DTC report their carpark volumes.

    Would be interesting to see.

I think they expect people to change onto the other bus route options, as it's 550m away.

It's very much Jarrett Walker's philosophy to change buses, whereas most people just want to get one bus from start to destination.

I think this is up to date.

I wonder did they keep S6 and S8 away from Dundrum to avoid traffic also.

It's interesting the 11 is being replaced by the 86. The 86 went out of service years ago.

It probably would've just made more sense to route the S8 through Sandyford Ind. Estate, Blackthorn Ave. right onto Sandyford Road, Balally and Wyckham Way then back to current route. That way it could still serve Dundrum SC if a stop was placed opposite the Tesco Garage.

I'm not sure about the logic behind the S8s routing through Monkstown Village either it would be better off in my opinion if it continued out of DL as far as Bakers Corner then right onto Abbey Road left off the TEK Roundabout and onto the Link Road with the bus lane brought into use. That would maintain a service to IADT.

I was a big fan of the 175, as it dropped me to the door of Dundrum in ~25 minutes including the 12 minute walk from my house to the bus stop on Fosters Avenue. Previously, I either had to get the 17 (and walk from Notre Dame/Dundrum Road) or a bus to Stillorgan and then the 75. As much as I'll miss the handy connection of the 175, overall it should be an improvement, with the vastly improved frequency of the S6 and/or the L25.

That's my experience of it anyways!

    Please stop this nonsense.

The original plan was dismissed by the Taoiseach. No ifs or buts.

As to the S8 route avoiding Dundrum, this was nothing more than dogma over substance by the NTA.

JW had left the process at this stage.

It is nothing more than the NTA not being prepared to admit that they’re wrong.

You are giving the NTA far too much credit and are overthinking the situation.

This is nothing more than a tick boxing exercise.

You also need to stop eulogising JW .

He was effectively discredited (as far as Dublin was concerned) by An Taoiseach in 2019 when he told Anne Graham to start from scratch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,593 ✭✭✭mikeybhoy

I thought one of the big things JW was unhappy about with the NTA was the fact the implementation was changed to being done on a phased basis rather being done all at once which was what he was promoting.

I think it's not possible to do it all at once. It's pretty complex. I'm pretty certain he does it in phases in every city.

I think the rumours about JW are nonsense.

    Sounds pretty positive here.

I'm definitely overstating the problem but I do think the Luas tweeting "we've got operational problems, Luas tickets are valid on Dublin bus", comes up a fair bit.

It'll be interesting to see how routes which suggest you switch from Bus to the Luas work out.

Whatever happened, the fact is he hasn't been involved in it for a long time and the much-changed final plan came long after he'd stopped working on it.

Any idea on when to expect the F-Spines and N2 bus?

I guess F spine was supposed to be phase 6 which was originally due in August and the N2 was phase 7 due this November. But obviously both are behind schedule.

Any insights would be awesome, thanks!!

There's a thread about the phasing of the new routes here:

But for the actual dates, I don't think anyone knows for sure.

I have seen a lot of training buses in Finglas on that route though

Can you give examples of this "much-changed" plan?

I imagine lots of people were complaining to their local politician about losing their service which brought them directly to town.

Does anyone know why the number 11 bus is being replaced by the 86?

Also on the "Map Key", does anyone know what "Peak time routes" in yellow are?

Also does anyone know the relationship between College Green Plaza pedestrianisation and the phases with which it's being phased in?

i.e. is after a certain spine is done, that College Green can be pedestrianisd?

Peak is similar to current d routes: stopping at all stops, but operating only peak time.

As well as bpassing DTC and IADT, the S8 isnt very frequent.

Its generally only 2 buses per hour, and over the weekend period, 2bph is as good as it gets.

So even a marginal delay to service could see it running only 1 bus in a 60 min period, even on a busy saturday or sunday, when people are going shopping to DTC or out to the coast.

I said it a few times, but i cant see how this service wont push alot of people back into cars.

Go and check the Dáil record - it’s in that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,954 ✭✭✭orangerhyme

On the Busconnects city center map, I currently see A spine and 3 purple routes going through College Green.

Will these be routed through Parliament Street and down the Quays in future?

Or is there another plan? There's plans to pedestrianise Parliament Street also IIRC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,246 ✭✭✭Daith

Are they going down Dame St or going around Trinity? The area in front of Trinity with the Luas won't be made car free and might still have some bus routes I think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,593 ✭✭✭mikeybhoy

The alignment isn't great alright. Not sure if it's gonna be driving people back to cars mind you as I'd imagine most regular 75 and 175 users don't own cars in the first place. It's mostly the young going to school/college and the elderly using those routes.

I guess the main benefit of the alignment is the improved connectivity to Sandyford Ind. Estate which is a key source of employment for South Dublin. There's currently no direct bus to Sandyford from Dun Laoghaire, Rathfarnham, Knocklyon, Firhouse and Tallaght apart from the the peak only 75a. So that should a big plus.

Thanks for that. But on TFI app (and zooming in to the bus stop in the Village) the W4 does not stop in the Village itself. Just on the Navan Road further back and in the shopping centre itself. The route takes the N4 and not via the Village. Maybe that has changed or the info isn't right or something.

That stop would do the trick alright, IF the W4 stopped there! I'm not sure why it doesn't, it makes no sense to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,658 ✭✭✭Qrt

Looking at Google Maps I don’t think the W4 could go southbound on the M50 if it went through the village.

I posted about this a good while ago but will share again as I can't find the post.

In the 2019 consultation report, there's a map showing the bus routing if College Green (between Georges Street & Trinity gates) was to be pedestrianized.

    image.png

Basically, the A spine routes plus orbital routes 71, 72, 73, & 85 would be routed around Cuffe Street -> St. Stephen's Green -> Dawson Street -> Westmoreland Street instead, like the F spine. Now, that plan could have changed since then, but this is a pretty good idea of the logic anyways.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,954 ✭✭✭orangerhyme

    Ok thanks.

I wonder is it worth all the hassle. Pedestrianising College Green I mean.

You'll have a constant stream of buses down Dawson Street and past Trinity College.

We seem to have a constant stream of buses, Luas and taxis all outside Trinity anyway. We should have fewer buses with the change.
