Agreed. As long as RTE didn't put a name on the 9 o'clock radio show there was the (very real ) fear that he would make a return after a period of purgatory .

Now that Virgin have taken up the tab there's no (immediate) threat of him returning to suckle on the national teat

Good to see that he still points at everyone when he's having a photo taken!

    Never change Ryan.....never change.

I'd assume he won't be droning on about how many books he's reading.....

Brendan O’Connor for the weekends but it’ll be hard to stretch that through the week.

If the management involved had a sense of humour they should get Renualt to sponsor his new show.

Probably wont be long before Virgin appear on Saorview here for those of us out of its coverage area!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,531 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

It won't ever be on Saorview as it's not an Irish station.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 914 ✭✭✭waywill1966

Neither is Sky News and Challenge! The wireless group has links here and the likes of Talksport and Virgin carry Irish ads online so it may not be ruled out just yet!

Ok fair enough but I can't see it happening. Either way, why on earth would you want to listen to him anyway.

Well, looking on the bright side, we got Bruiser Bakhurst in exchange. So it's swings and roundabouts!

The person that I'm really, REALLY delighted for is Noel "Agent for the Biggest Stars" Kelly who will, once again, be getting his 10% for being Tubs's bagman.

Well done to Noel Kelly. A good agent will always get maximum value for his stable of talent. He’s obviously great at his job.

    Wow!

What an absolute coup for Ryan and NK. Both of them have broken a market 10 times the size of Ireland. That's actually incredible. I'm not surprised though. Ryan is one of the greats and to be honest RTE and Ireland was probably too small for him. I'm sure he planned a move like this when he stepped down from the late late anyway.

I've been told he has a book deal in the offing as well.

You just cannot keep a good man down!

it appears you can't keep a mediocre man down either

How will it work in terms of content when his show is cast across two countries?

He won't be able to fill the show with Irish-centric content and small talk as that will turn away the UK audience. In the same was he won't recapture much of the market here if his show has too much of a focus on the UK.

  • Registered Users Posts: 351 ✭✭StormForce13

Well, Bruiser is pleased for him. (Maybe he thinks that Tubs will refund that €150,000 now!)

"RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst has said that he is “really pleased” to hear that former RTÉ star Ryan Tubridy has landed a new radio job.

Speaking exclusively to the Irish Mirror just an hour after Mr Tubridy announced he was moving to Virgin Radio in the UK, Mr Bakhurst described it as a “good signing” for the station. Mr Bakhurst wished Mr Tubridy well in his new role. I'm really pleased for Ryan,” he told the Irish Mirror. “I like him personally, I've always said I think he's talented. I thought it was only a matter of time before he found something.

“I know the people who run Virgin in the UK. I used to regulate them when I was at Ofcom so “I know the individuals there and they're a good organisation. I think it's a good signing for them and it's great news for Ryan obviously.”

I presume he won't try all that "kindness" sh1te on his new show, will he?

That's a bit harsh on Oliver Callan - but 100% correct in the case of Brendan Courtney!

The real winner today is the long suffering Irish licence fee payer....

No coming back to sucking on the RTE tit now for the main leach of them all....

I suspect Tubridy is on an absolute fraction of what he has been on for the past 2 decades....for what appears to be alot more hours of " work"....

A reality check for the talentless DLB....

I predict the brits will not take well to him....

This is certainly an interesting development.

There hasn't been a relay of Virgin Radio UK on FM in Dublin, since we used it as a daytime service on early Phantom. At the time, we relayed Virgin Radio off satellite in the daytime, until we went live ourselves at 5pm.

I remember Chris Evans on breakfast mentioning listeners being in contact from Dublin, when officially they should not have been able to listen to him. I believe he was eventually told to stop mentioning the Dublin audience, because it was a pirate relay.

At least this time Q102, will have permission to re-broadcast. :)

Very different Virgin these days despite Chris Evans being back!

The old Virgin still runs as Absolute whereas this is basically a music lead Talksport spin-off

I would imagine he’s doing just fine for himself. Presuming the weekend gig will be a pre-rec ‘best of show’.

    Venom oozing off this post.

Have just been whatsapping one of my friends who is in the industry. Says Tubs very much landed on his feet. Hasn't heard the exact pay but said it's multiples of the "offer" from Bakhurst.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,531 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

He was already off the licence fee wage bill since August so no news there.

They way people post these things as if all his salary was coming directly out of their own pocket or that RTE have no right to spend money just sounds so bitter.

With Tubridy gone you're no better off as the licence fee has not changed.

Yes the begrudgery is still strong on this forum. It will be interesting to see how many of the bitter and twisted will take time out of their 'busy' lives to listen to him on Virgin and then come on here to snark and ridicule.

Of course it will be even more galling for the saddoes if he ends up on more money than he was at RTE. There will be no end to their vitriol.

he won't recapture much of the market here if his show has too much of a focus on the UK.

I'm sure he'll keep things ticking over in those slots for the Irish stations, and I doubt they'd be expecting more than that. The likes of Q102 are mainly just background noise for takeaways etc. I'd imagine it's hard to lose significant numbers of listeners unless you're truly obnoxious and playing wall to wall Pantera or something

    This is brilliant!

The 2nd dumbest thing the Brits have done since 2016.

    He's their problem now.

Imagine saying last year that Tubridy would end up on Q102 or LMFM.

A victory this is not for the man.

His ego will be hurting knowing he isn't on a national radio slot in Ireland.

Well done Kevin Bakhurst. Bravo. Whatever you do now you'll be remembered for kicking this lad and his grubby agent out of RTE.
