Ryan Tubridy joins The Wireless Group - Thread bans in opening post

Ryan Tubridy has joined the News Broadcasting and Wireless Ireland family. After many months of speculation, He will present a daily 3 hour music and entertainment show on both Virgin Radio UK and Dublin’s Q102, starting early in the new year.

He will also present a weekend show that will broadcast on Q102, Cork 96, Limerick 95 & LMFM.

He is on Q102 10am-1pm weekdays which will be a simulcast of Virgin Radio UK.

This is the next step in networking that we've seen creep in, what has up to now been networked from Dublin, could going forward end up networked from further afield.

It's hard to say - his stock was very low when he went out into the market looking for new work, and was definitely approaching any negotiation from a position of weakness. One would expect that the likes of Virgin commercial managers are not pushovers like Dee Forbes. In any case, as we are not paying it doesn't matter. From RTEs perspective though, it would be interesting for them to know what the open market rate for their best star ended up being.

One thing for sure though is that he will have to work a lot harder over there, three hours every day is a lot of time to fill and keep interesting at the same time.

As I said, he's got a great slot and is punching above his weight with it. The problem with that though is that if you don't quickly step up, you will get clobbered.

He won't get a better chance to become an internationally successful broadcaster.

He got a great slot filling in mornings the Graham at the BBC and didn’t manage to name more out of it. Hopefully he’ll be more successful this time

It would be an interesting thing? A UK + IRL daily Radio Show live broadcasted in both Jurisdictions with callers from both Jurisdictions.

From what little I know I would have thought Virgin's profile was a bit younger & poppier than Tubs? I guess he can tailor his schtick, not so much Dean Martin and Tony Bennett, the way he presumably did when he moved to 2FM...

Unlikely in Cork anyway, PJ Coogan is pulling 60k - 70k listeners according to latest JNLR so can't imagine Tubs will end up on in Cork in that time slot anyway.

Good luck to him though, always liked him on tv and radio and I hope it works out for him.

Just wondering what slots on the wireless radio stations will the Tubridy weekend show be on?

The likelihood is that it will be a pre recorded show. That would mitigate putting it on Saturday or Sunday morning radio, less listener interaction, and more staid production sound than a live broadcast.

It would be a pity to see the real good top notch morning weekend presenters on Cork’s 96FM (and others on the Wireless Network) lose out to a pre recorded Irish show from (most likely) London or Dublin. And they are some of the best local broadcasters.

My bet would be that the Tubridy show would replace the Irish focused shows on the weekend evenings on the various radio stations.

Who knows.

Agreed. As long as RTE didn't put a name on the 9 o'clock radio show there was the (very real ) fear that he would make a return after a period of purgatory .

Now that Virgin have taken up the tab there's no (immediate) threat of him returning to suckle on the national teat
