It's the way that pretty much all commercial radio operates nowadays. DJs (or should I say "presenters"?) have little or no control over their playlists anymore and are tied to the same couple of hundred tracks. It's supposedly what people want to hear; I've never understood that but I'm not your average person either. Add to that the restrictions imposed on commercial radio in Ireland and it all gets very bland.

It's strange because they DO seem to play other music on the Guestlist show, so they clearly have licensed other music... just not bothering to play it in the mornings for example.

I noticed some less common Nova songs being played over the weekend, still fairly safe stuff but was nice to hear a break from the norm

i had a chuckle recently, they played some vox pop style ad for themselves - you know, joe soap saying 'i love nova because..'

and one of the people in the ad said 'i love nova because i never don't know the songs that they play'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,100 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

Another guy on those ads also says "...because they never play the same songs repeatedly "

another ad yesterday, for ashfield college - the leavin gcert grind school. addressed directly at the students; 'you'll make friends for life here, your leaving cert is secure with us' etc.

what 17 year old listens to nova?

I’m guessing their parents do though and I think there may be a business connection with the college through some of Novas shareholders.

They may have got a discount for advertising across all their stations (plus parents could hear the ad).

What is a "grind school" anyway? Is it where you learn to make coffee?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,100 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

serious answer here ;) .. It's one of those "Institute" schools that basically give you refreshers on subjects better than your school ever could and they give you lots of prep for what will likely come up in the exam.

I went to one of those for 2 weeks, and it's the only reason I did well in my Leaving Cert as my so called "prestigious school" had some of the worst teachers imaginable.

I know its a syndicated show, and tbh, their monologues are awful cringe, but have to say enjoying the music played during the Duff McKagan show. More of those songs during regular Nova shows would be great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,100 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

Is that the show where they sound like they are speaking in an echo chamber ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 992 ✭✭✭TheBMG

Heard them play New York Groove during the week. Briefly wondered if Nova had added it to their playlist but it was Duffs show (and they explained the reason it was going viral)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,369 ✭✭✭endofrainbow

It's painful listening, almost on a par with Bruce and Patti's syndicated show.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 7,393 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

Given Nova have a few syndicated shows, are they cheaper than having even local programming voice tracked?

Is it a case of so called 'celebs' being onair as the reason for buying them. I mean the Kim Wilde 80s show could easily be done from here with little or no voice overs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,018 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

Just to clarify, the Kim Wilde 80s Show is on sister station Classic Hits.

Thanks, sorry yeah but I guess the question is in general.

Voice tracking must be cheaper than buying these shows unless punters like to hear these 'celebs'.

Wonder how long before they seriously consider a push going for a nationwide licence.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 7,393 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

I have no idea how they've gotten around their original 🪪 of being a rock station, clearly they're not and softening the playlist as clearly paid off for them.

^^^ they've gotten around the original notion of being a rock station because the audience won't hold them to account. Softening the playlist makes it more suitable for hairdressers, café etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,363 ✭✭✭prunudo

And yet, now bare in mind I'm jumping in and out of the machine, but since the 11 o'clock news, I've heard both Thin Lizzy don't believe a word and Led Zepplin Stairway to heaven. Show me another station in ireland where youd hear that on a Friday morning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,596 ✭✭✭waywill1966

Brannigan spoke about it a few years back but it would only have been semi national with the same coverage as Classic Hits but nothing ever came of it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,010 ✭✭✭its_steve116

They are so classic rock that they play Tom Walker.

Been quite a while, so what's the current nova news?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,010 ✭✭✭its_steve116

Paul McGuinness (LMFM) seems to be gone after just under two years...

I thought that, as Vikki was presenting Sunday nights recently.
