    Great contest.

The referee was excellent, NZ were amazing, Ireland were fearless.

Tremendous heart and skill on display. A great day for rugby: the best sport of all.

Immensely proud of this team and proud to be Irish.

New Zealand played 20 minutes with 14 men and Ireland could make no headway. Ireland looked wrecked with 20 minutes to go. Questions to be asked.

Hard to take positives in showing effort and heart. Bare minimum at the elite end. Too many unforced errors.

And talk of getting up after each punch to the stomach by this NZ side? Both teams play at 100% and we win. But we didn't and they did.

Playing the big names in every game has cost us too, I think it showed tonight. We are the only big side to do it.

    Too many unforced errors.

Absolutely elite rugby by the All blacks.

Great effort in the end, but below par all round.

Phenomenal defence and break down by NZ. It's about getting it done whatever way you can.

Can't help but feel this tournament might come to be remembered a bit like the 2002 football World Cup as one of our best ever opportunities to go deep into the latter stages considering the problems other sides had. What are the chances the likes of England and Australia come into the next competition with the kind of issues they've faced, or that we'll come into it with the kind of momentum and quality we had here? This might prove to be the best shot at a World Cup for at least a generation or two.

Yeah the classic Irish attitude of players have lots of heart. That attitude got us past any quarter final? This NZ team was talked about as one of the weakest teams from NZ to go into a world cup. They had 14 men for 20 mins of the game but still won. Our players choked, we didn't contest the line outs, the scrums or the breakdowns. We choked. We. Are. Bottlers.

Correct. Watch the ABs go and lose the RWC now....I don't think France or SA will be that fearful of playing them.

We can't just say 'it's what NZ do', and they just play their best at the World Cup.

    Because that's the point.

Ireland choked the first 15 minutes where we went 13-0 down. The players' brilliance meant we stayed in it, but the same old frailties we have at every QF cost us.

This will linger for Irish rugby for 4 years, and it should.

Thing is they've been winning those ugly games for a long time now when not at their best.

It's the same issue as the SA game, effort was there but if you look at it from a technical perspective we were nowhere near good enough to win. We got away with it against SA but tonight we paid the price for it.

And we can talk about a nonsense game in Chicago til the cows come home. 2 quarter finals in 4 years, NZ have our number.

Why do you think a team gives away a penalty try? Because they’re under immense pressure. Not that the attacking team is relying on an ‘own goal’ type situation. So yes, saying Ireland relied on a penalty try to stay in it is a clueless comment.

Winning test series and 6Ns is meaningless when it comes to our WC record. In fairness though I can’t even imagine how the players are feeling right now.

thought it wasnt our night and we nearly made it,really brave effort ,to the victor the spoils ,but a held up Kelleher try effort was the difference between winnin and losing, how far we have come when we look at not beating All blacks as a missed opportunity, the George hook brigade will be throwing biros but I am happy we gave it our best shot .

Proud of what? We played real 2 games of rugby at this tournament, we won 1 and lost 1.

Romania, Tonga and Scotland were just warm up matches.

Yeah it's just very frustrating at this stage.

Irish rugby is a well oiled machine now. Look at the players that have come through when we thought it would be downhill after the likes of O Gara and O Driscoll. The future is bright.

One of the most famous rugby laws in future should be: if you've never won a knockout game in a world cup don't get cocky.

Ireland have not been in the lead in a RWC QF match since Neil fùcking Francis was in a green jersey......

And it goes on for another 4 years...

What else did we score in the second half?

When sexton missed the penalty the writing was on the wall.

    Yep....long suffering Mayo fan here...

That was like watching Mayo vs Dublin....there was only going to be one winner

Inceridble game - best Irish team ever , a few below ther best , but Barrett stopping a certain try and victory was what killed us - they will hurt like nothing we can imagine , but they certainly made me proud.

Bundee Aki whata man what a game / what a tournament.

I am actually not too upset, they put everything into that, this is nothing like Argentina or Wales, those left me hollow, this was actually a spirited performance, they made a few mistakes and fell short, sometimes those are the breaks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,466 ✭✭✭landofthetree

It's all Wales and Scotland fault. They voted against our WC bid. This match should have been in Dublin(Aviva or Croke Park). We would have won with home advantage. NZ have won 2 world cups on home soil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,628 ✭✭✭Augme

We didn't trust our squad. Despite how good it's been and the purpose of ensuring we have depth for a world cup. Expecting win a world cup with a 38 year old out-half and nothing behind is just really poor management too.

There does need to be criticism of the coaching staff, the issues at line out have been there since our first warm up game and now 8 games on the line out was just as much of a shambles.
