Agree that with current demand for tesla packs their price is high but I don't see this continuing for too long as you can get much cheaper batteries elsewhere and a DIYer most certainly will shop around.

Considering that all other EVs have dropped in price similair to ICE cars I fail to see where this residual value in a battery will be in the future when you'll be getting 50EUR/kWh cells...

I would say your local scrap yard will give you whatever they think you might get from another scrap yard rather than the sum of the parts.

Very few if any e.v.'s in Ireland have made it that far so its too early to say either way, but you'd have to admit many scrap yards that are not trained in high voltage either cannot legally or wont want the hassle of breaking an ev, so at end of life your ev will likely have to go to a specialist. Any specialist who invests in setting up will want to make good margin.

Either way, buying a new or newish ev now, I dont think many buyers would really be considering what it might be worth at end of life - but would be trying to guess what it might be worth in 3 or 4 years - or however long they keep cars for on average

Very decent affordable car for that money - obviously its a small car but in reality many people driving mini suv's dont have much more cabin space anyway. I imagine with a small battery and low weight they would be very economical to run too

The e-Up! feels very spacious on the inside, the car is barebones but in a way that works well, minimalist due to lack of stuff instead of by design.

All the big scrapyards do EVs and there are even specialised EV scrapyards!

there seems to be a big slowdown in speed of selling and a lot still looking for dreamworld pricing.

One i spotted a few. months back, it started at €28,500, has gradually dropped 6.5 k to €22 k, its still not a bargain, and high mileage, but amazed that people use words like : price drop, final price drop and now , “Selling Due to mortgage need to sell”

I love laughing at "final price drop" in ads. Yeah mate no it isnt if no one still offers or views it because its still overpriced

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,429 ✭✭✭✭unkel

In fairness he says he is open to offers. And indeed "selling due to mortgage need to sell". Current asking price is €22k, which is still too high, but chances are if you drop into him this evening with €18k, you might get it. And it would be a bargain at that. For reference, the cheapest asking price 120Ah i3 on DoneDeal is now €20k. And the cheapest overall i3, a 2014 60Ah is now €12.5k

Apologies if this has been asked before. Regarding the purchase of a "VAT Qualifying" car from Northern Ireland. I have an ROI VAT number and ROI registered business. Lets say I purchase a 2018 "Vat Qualifying" car, such as an Audi A6 from a dealer in Northern Ireland and the car in question has always been an NI Car. My understanding is, that car does not require a customs declaration.

Different dealers have given me different ways that they handle the sale of VAT qualifying cars.

Dealer 1 for example says that if I give them my VAT number, they will sell me the VAT qualifying car without VAT - so 20% (NI VAT rate) off the price. If I buy this car from Dealer 1 at a zero VAT rate in NI, and then I present it for VRT, they will see a sales invoice with zero NI VAT. Will I then be required to pay ROI Vat at 23% when I present it for VRT? If so I would be better off paying the NI VAT at 20%.

Dealer 2 (main dealer) told me that if I buy a VAT qualifying car from them I must pay them the VAT upfront. When I then complete the VRT procedure and send them a confirmation showing that the Car has been registered in ROI and VRT paid, they will then refund me the 20% Vat paid in NI.

To me the Dealer 2 system is less risky. I will be done and dusted with the VRT system so how would ROI customs know if HMRC later refunded me the NI VAT?

    Thanks in advance

HMRC will only refund you the UK VAT if you can prove to them that you paid Irish VAT (I’ve done it multiple times)

If your buying a car from NI that’s always been in NI, you just buy the car and import it here as normal, without paying any VAT.

clearly they aren’t shifting at €29k, but €19k is great value per km of range for a town runabout.

there’s 3 in cork and now another one on DD in Wexford, all €19k, so that’s clearly the price level. Everyone with a new one has taken quite a hit

Why are some sellers advertising Seat's as VWs?

I know they might be fundamentally the same car, but advertise it as a Seat ffs!

But why advertise a car as a VW, when the photos are a Seat?

And when someone goes to view it, it's not a VW.

    Just stupid

I noticed that too - I just assumed its because it’s essentially the very same car, but everyone knows the Up and very few would know the Mii (or fewer still the Skoda CitGo) - so the dealer with the Mii advertises it as an Up.

    All 3 are identical cars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,703 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Accepted, but it's not an Up.

I remember a few years ago recommending a Seat to a work colleague to which he replied 'I wouldn't drive one of those Spanish Fiats' !

I wonder is there a still a bit of that around amongst the car uneducated?

    2015 Leaf €3k

Big miles, but long NCT. And these cars are very reliable and it has the later battery chemistry, which is less prone to degradation. I'd buy it in an instant if I were in the market, some bargain.

That sold on Friday morning at merlins. Not going to say what it sold for but suffice it to say there's a good margin in it. Wonder if he'd swap my lower mile 2011 leaf for it, I'd love the starship odometer!

If it was priced €5k less it could be considered a bargain.

If you can point me in the direction of a clean 19 Leaf for 11-12k, let me know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,429 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Not claiming to speak for @User1998, but they have a point in that even the lowest asking price Leaf 40kWh isn't really that great an option. For just a few grand more, you'd get an ID.3 with double the range. For several grand less, you'd get an Ioniq, which has the same range, is far cheaper to own, can be charged much faster and doesn't rely on the obsolete CHAdeMO charging standard

ID3 is starting to look like one of the better value EV options in used market. Personally not a big Nissan fan so rules out a leaf. Tesla second hand asking prices are the pits and sellers not moving by much- happy to leave car up for long periods.

We are missing the lease returns we lived off coming in from U.K., a now isolated right hand drive market- not good 😌

    😎

Well for a start heres one with similar mileage for €2k less than the one you posted. So straight away I’ve saved you €2k before you even make them an offer.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/view/34581357

If dealers are selling them for €15k like I’ve shown, you will be able to get one from a private seller for around €12k if your good at negotiating and willing to wait for the right car. Best of luck

Back axle or stub axle definitely knackered on that, also needs a new quarter panel and rear bumper. When you add labour and paint, it’s unlikely to be a cheap fix.
