if you select "Discussions" on the results you can then filter by individual forums, which is actually quite useful but it's not very intuitive ("Discussions" should be the default IMO). I don't think it's possible to search an individual thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,987 ✭✭✭Inviere

Whatever the default was, I didn't change anything (nor should a user have to really, unless they want a custom/specific search. Decade old random results certainly aren't a 'best match', regardless of sort order really.)

Not been able to see comments was reported before and was never fixed.

If you change 'discussions' to 'comments' in the url, you can see them.

    https://www.boards.ie/profile/comments/<username>

Strange thing on the resulting page the link for comments is correct.

Edit: - Earlier posts on it #2300 page 77.

Avatars went missing for some threads

Sometimes you can see them, sometimes you can't. Sometimes you can see a couple of pages but not all of them.

Pot luck depending on when you try. 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for flagging this. This issue has been reported. I'll update here when I get some more info into what is causing it.

Tried to start a new discussion re drivers driving whilst on mobile phones (in transport & motoring forum)

… hampered by being required to select a category from a drop-down list that doesn’t seem to have rhyme or reason.

^ Yeah, that’s a real pain. Could they not be listed single file in alphabetical order? Or is that too easy?

    Morning all,

Thanks to all for flagging this. I neglected to update here last week. There was a fix implemented on the missing avatars so this shouldn't be an issue any longer.

The issue with choosing a category for a new discussion is being looked at to see if there is a way to make it more user friendly. It is admittedly a bit awkward. I have found on desktop that pressing the first letter of the category until I find it is a workaround eg.. For Building Regs I press "b" until it highlights down through the list.

Also, I'm unsure if the point was raised here or not but there was some info added to the footers yesterday. "About Us" & "Contact Us" had 404 errors and didn't link through. They are working as normal now.

Thanks for all your feedback here.

The sudden scrolling upwards on mobile is still happening.

And clicking on avatar/comments on desktop still doesn't bring you to comments, it brings you to discussions/threads opened.

On my own profile if I click on "comments" at the top right, it does bring me to my comments - for other posters it still brings me to discussions/threads opened.

Is the page scrolling upwards immediately after the page load or randomly afterwards? If it is immediately after the page load it is most likely due to sticky ad settings load up. Which most likely cannot be avoided. Either way I can look further into it.

I will also flag the issue where clicking on comments in avatar profile pop-up links to discussions rather than comments.

    Thanks HeidiHeidi.

It happens randomly - if I click into a thread where there lots of new posts to read, 15-30 seconds into reading through the page (that's a guesstimate) the page suddenly shoots upwards and bounces around the place for a bit.

If it is something to do with ad loading, then they're taking a helluva long time to load, which is a different issue.

Okay, Thanks for that. I'll see what can be found out about this and what can be done to resolve it. Any Desktop users seeing the same issues??

This has been reported numerous times, by me and lots of other posters.

..and for a long period of time now Mike, this isn’t something new.

I'm aware but the more info I have the better able I am to explain the issue to support at Vanilla. I have read back through previous comments on this thread and have gathered some more info.

I'll update here as when I get some feedback from support.

    Desk, FF

1.This never happens on home page.

2.It often(if not always) happens on any thread page if you load from "Latest post" tab

    image.png

3.I was speculating possible cause on #2346. As mentioned, once stopped loading scripts by X it does not jump. To me it seem like issue between "last post"(aka #latest) vs "last read"/"first unread" . .postbit-header position might well be related.

I wonder, where are you reading/posting from? Does it not happen for you @Boards.ie: Mike ? Share and we perhaps move to your "flawless" platform

This is reported for last year or so - unbelievable that no one from boards or vanilla sat down and see it for themselves, investigate and finally fix it

These two stickies appeared out of nowhere when I refreshed the home page just now.

It happened to me last night too. The RI charter seemed to have some sort of upvote/downvote thing going on.

Thank you for that info. It's always great when someone understands what is going on in system processes I am certainly not the most techy person. It is a great help to narrow down the search on the vanilla side to get a solution much quicker.

I'm reading from desktop on chrome. I have rarely seen this happen so I suppose it hasn't bothered me. Although I will hold up my hand a say that it should have. I understand that it is very bothersome for others that is why I am trying to assist in a solution for this. I certainly wouldn't say that this platform is "flawless" any one with a pair of eyes can see that. I'm aware that this was flagged some time ago there is so much going on here everyday it is impossible to sort out everything, and try to resolve things in order of priority.

I had that too but it disappeared when I refreshed the page.

It's like a box of chocolates here, you never know what you're gonna get. 🤣

    CONNECTION TIMED OUT

The initial connection between Cloudflare's network and the origin web server timed out. As a result, the web page can not be displayed.

Dont get me wrong - its not a gripe at you personally.

However, you must understand that users getting tired when things are reported repeatedly, for long time and there is still no improvement.

Fact that you do not experience same as me(some other) is interesting...

If you would, once you read this post, please scroll up to the top of the page, right-click>>"open in new tab" on #2373, go to that new tab and start reading/scrolling down as you would normally be reading - 15s later page jump back to #2373. Close tab to return to first browser tab, no refresh

Repeat, right-click>>"open in new tab" #2373, go to that new tab except this time stop loading by X (or whatever it is in Chrome) as soon page load readable content (3-5s) , continue scrolling down as reading - observe no jump

15 seconds - is about the time it takes for btloader and snigelweb scripts to load, then page jump/adjust to align to the top

    image.png

This what i experience - let us know what is yours. Note - i do not experience this jump on any other website that i have gone to, boards exclusive.

Another trial, different issue, i think it was also reported before:

On home page latest posts tab I select random thread from AH, its old, its big, i dont follow and never have read

    image.png

I open it as right-click>>"open in new tab" from the title - loaded on first page first post - good start. I scroll two pages and close tab

back in home page latest posts tab(no refresh). This time i open same thread right-click>>"open in new tab" from #latest column - i am landed on page 4 first post - why, where is the page 3 ? close tab

back in home page latest posts tab(no refresh) . Repeat right-click>>"open in new tab" from #latest column - landed on page 6 - why random pages? its neither latest nor last read

go to AH forum, locate same thread - right-click>>"open in new tab" on the title - page 8. So perhaps not random - even numbers. ?

again - page 10. Note - every page tagged #latest

    image.png

Tested on another thread in Work & Jobs

right-click>>"open in new tab" from title, read first page, close tab, right-click>>"open in new tab" from #latest column - page 2, then 5, 6, 9 - well this looks random

    image.png

I'm reading from desktop on chrome. I have rarely seen this happen so I suppose it hasn't bothered me.

If this refers to the sudden random shooting upwards thing - as I have reported every time, it's only on mobile, not desktop.
