I do think you can go back to The Full Irish and Tubrity Tonight in the 2000s.

The Full Irish regained an audience from Ian Dempsey's defection to Today FM back in 1998. Ian Dempsey I think has said that in terms of numbers only The Full Irish and Breakfast Republic really dented his audience numbers over the years.

He seemed alright on Tubrity Tonight, it was a different RTÉ Chat show, didn't rely so heavily on the sad story, it was more entertainment driven. (RTÉ didn't have a full time Saturday Night host after Kenny left for TLLS and I think between 2001 and 2003 had no Saturday night chat show).

And they were both well received, but largely he comes out of nowhere, having hung around RTÉ for 5 years before landing The Full Irish, having done very little previously.

A tenacious agent, a very strong PR-machine behind him operated by said agent, the right familial connections, bland enough not to offend, the right level of mediocrity not to be truly woeful, never controversial enough to get RTE in trouble from a legal perspective (again, blandness helps here), appealing to certain "mammy" demographic, a lack of any real competition, but most of all the ability to hide in plain sight for many years.

The problem with that however is The Full Irish audience are now 15+ years older. Not sure they'll be sipping the Tubs Kool Aid now. And the auld ones probably wouldn't even know where to find 2Fm on the dial. Though if it meant and end to Jennifer Zamparelli talking about knobs (of the anatomical variety) all day everyday I suppose it's almost worth considering............almost.

Kenny is smart and lectured in Chemical Engineering in one of the Dublin colleges before joining RTE. Tubridy has an Arts degree.Kenny's success is based on talent and Tubridy's was not. Kenny tends to do a lot of preparation for interviews. Don't think that Kenny and Tubridy are in the same class when it comes to intellect and ability.

Kenny is Champions League. Tubridy is Inter Two Bob Cup. No comparison. Kenny can at times irritate me. But there is no denying his ability.

There is one big difference between Kenny and Tubridy: Kenny has a radio programme and Tubridy does not.

All those big offers from broadcasters don't seem to have appeared. Those "offers" that have been mentioned seemed to be just promoting the stations rather than being serious offers. Tubridy and Kelly may have thought that Tubridy was essential for RTE but the JNLR figures have shown no collapse since he was taken off radio. There are also some more PAC and Media committee appearances on the way for RTE.

"Another person using the term I coined (Ryan Subsidy)"

TYFYS. You were the one man in Ireland who could see that subsidy rhymed with Tubridy. Well done, well done.

Don't think that Kenny and Tubridy are in the same class when it comes to intellect and ability.

That was the point I made, in my post that you quoted.

I said that there was no comparison in terms of intellect and grasp of current affairs, between the two of them.

    No comparison. None whatsoever.

Don’t think he’ll care- he did leave the LLS after all - I really do hope this year is about putting the toys back into the toy show

It's not just Current Affairs. Tubridy is the product of an FF/RTE bubble. And the bubble burst spectacularly in the last few weeks.

    From the Pat Kenny Interview

There was a famous senior executive in RTE who remarked about Gerry Ryan, when Gerry was looking for a better contract, that he could go over to UCD, across the road in Belfield, to the L&H Society and pick up "half-a-dozen Gerry Ryans". Then Gerry Ryan died tragically - and they can't replace Gerry Ryan.

I would slightly agree with his estimation of Gerry Ryan and 2FM... however who did they replace him with ... Ryan Tubrity ... and for how long ... and how did that work out ?

Well Ryan's Radio 1 audience stayed on Radio 1. While Ryan lost audiences for 2FM, and all of the replacements since have retain Ryan's low audience on 2FM.

One thing that amazes me is the sheer disdain that the likes of Pat Kenny and Tubs have for RTE. Kenny worked for RTE for over forty years and helped give him a great life. He was on almost a million per year at one stage. Now all he wants to do is criticise the institution.

Same with Tubs. Tubs tried to throw RTE under the bus, saying it was all their fault for understating his pay. Do these people have even an ounce of gratitude for all that RTE did for them?

    Communication was the greatest fatality

21,592 posts on this thread. So much for it being a "nothing burger". It looks like the Tubridy payments scandal has changed the face of Irish broadcasting. Wonder how Tubridy's big podcast is going?

He hasn’t started it get because he’s mulling over which of the tv offers from ITV, BBC, and GB News to take up.

Who bizarrely looks not dissimilar to the main character below:

    Untitled Image

It’s like they googled “Toyman” and saw one existed, decided to base the above character on his likeness, but didn’t bother to read the full article that explained he was in fact a criminal.

That would be a great story for some journalist in the Irish media, if there are any left. :)

Ryan has only left RTE a few weeks ago guys, it's a bit unfair to be chiding him for not going on to anything else already.

He has plenty of options, he is not under serious financial pressure, just give him a bit of time. Even if you don't like him remember lots of people do and he will present a show to a mass audience once again if that's what he wants to do.

I think it's a bit surprising, on here it seems to be people who don't like Ryan who are complaining about him not being back rather than people who can't wait to hear him again.

Indeed- plenty of options- England Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Australia New Zealand - endless choices really

People aren’t complaining about him not being back, they’re complaining about the propaganda war being waged on his behalf by his NK stablemates and in the rags claiming he had offers coming out his wazoo when all available evidence points to the contrary. As I suspect you well know.

Any idea who will take over his morning radio show?

What about an up and coming talent, such as Rex Ryan ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,577 ✭✭✭RoTelly

We are discussing his options. So far they have not arisen. I agree he should possibly wait. Butterskui suggested Today FM, and TBH that not a bad bet, I have listed to Dave without Dermo in the past when Dermo has been off and it does not really work, so if he see a fall in audience I think Today FM in Six months time may be the home of The Tubrity Show.

If taking bets I’ll bet against the two of ya 😀

I just don’t think Today FM is a natural home for Ryan - don’t ask me why as I can’t articulate it- I think it’s a branding thing or something - ok here’s my best articulation -Ryan in my view, actually represents all that was wrong with RTÉ - - a job for life with no fear of the gravy train breaking down- sat back and hung up his shoes a long time ago - he struggled on TV; his radio show was middle of the road at best - that’s not good enough for Today FM- those listeners are a bit more discerning and won’t tolerate that level of mediocrity - it’s why they switched channel in the first place

Who do they replace Dave with, do they give him a side kick? I will be interesting to see how well he does alone, and then who replaces him.

The production team that worked with Tubridy for all those years must feel like complete fools to have been taken in by the story of Tubridy's pay cuts. Perhaps anyone who would work with him the future would want to know exactly how much he is being paid.

That story about Gerry Ryan is interesting. I suppose that RTE was easily able to replace the Tubridy in a way that it could not replace Gerry Ryan.
