So because you prefer Dunnes or SuperValu, nobody else should have a choice? I guess architecture and design is very much an individual taste, I don’t see any major difference in the design of the various supermarkets around me anyway.

Supermarkets tend to be built in or on the edge of urban areas, and drive consumer choice and cost savings. Dunne/ Tesco and SuperValu/Centra were pretty expensive before the arrival of Aldi and Lidl to shake up the market.

Are you comparing the well-maintained tourist areas of Rome/Italy with the suburban areas of Dublin?

Because comparing the tourist areas of Dublin and Rome, there are mini stores around the city centre of both.

If you go outside that tourist area to where the majority of people actually live, you’ll find they have supermarkets the same as we do.

I will say however that many Irish town and village centres are quite ugly with choice of developments that don't blend in with what's already there and carbuncles that people stick on their houses. Heaps of corporate plastic and vinyl over small shops, chemists etc.

It's rare to find a pretty town or village here, in Italy they are quite normal.
