It broke national August records, both for sustained winds and wind gusts. Red warning for Cork.

Northwest of Cork Airport in Ballincollig. Can confirm it's miserable! Flights are still departing though, I can hear them from my home office.

Also, we've been averaging between 3 and 4 mm of rainfall per hour here since 1300h. I guess even the seagulls will be taking the bus today...

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Remember this day 4 years ago in Croke Park the rain that fell at ht in the hurling final was biblical.

Right. I can remember things much further back with great clarity, short term memory loss!!

I remember Laois, Offaly and Kildare being in a special high level covid warning that August but nothing about the weather!

Just went through my socials, looks like the red warning back then was issued at very short notice for an overnight event. Any chance of a repeat performance of that this time around, given how fast this system seems to be evolving?

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

If systems usually correct a bit northwards this could be messy alright.

Not necessarily. With a moderate to strong El Nino and with the unusually warm sea temps this could be a stormy winter. It's looking bleak for snow though. With the sea temps things will be even more marginal than usual.

Our caravan is the next headland around from the red warning in west cork. An anxious night ahead hoping the wind swings SW before the worst arrives!! We felt it was safer to stay at home but hard not to worry.

Met Office fax chart forecast for 06z in the morning vs Storm Ellen in August 2020.

Storm Ellen significantly deeper and shows a steeper gradient than Betty but they share similarities in evolution and storm track expected. Don't expect to see records broken this time around compared to Ellen based on current guidance, however that's not a reason to say this won't be impactful. Wait and see.

We’re just leaving our caravan in Dungarvan and will definitely be a bit worried about it too.

Good call Dungarvan looks like it will take a battering!

Not surprised, judging from the latest radar image. Waterford looks like it's getting pressure-washed at the moment.

4pm reports show Cork Airport at 8.5mm of rain and Roaches at 6.9mm

Heavy rain in the city but not too bad, but judging by the increase in the waterford weather info that band is not far off from me

AROME 12z rolling out, interesting keeping the strongest winds off shore and along the coast, showing very heavy rainfall to come. Lots of energy in the system.

That white Church Newross data seems about right. That area always gets the heavy rain and lightning seems to pick up around there while heading north north east

Red marine warnings have been issued

The heat to the south and east is going to feed the storm so plenty of rain anyway...wind still a danger too though with the trees this time of year

Violent storm force 11 is indeed dangerous especially at this time of year. Time for Cork to see a red alert yet....there I've said it 😆 🤣
