Overrated and disappointing films

The Irishman - just too long and a pointless exercise in rehashing a load of Italian mafia shite that we've seen a million times before.

There's no accounting for taste. I don't know the nunber of times I thought a film was crap only to go online and find people fawning over it.

Has ever a film been so overhyped, overrated? from its original cinema release, through various DVD releases ?

bought it on DVD, got a takeaway, sat down watched it… “ ok this is a slow burner , no problem “….. “ errrr this isn’t really living up to the hype “…. ” Ok this is not a very good film “…. … sat through about 90 minutes of it….

Problem with Tarantino he overdoes the quirky often at the expense of a little more quality.

Well, every film on my list I've seen more than once, with the exception of 'The Rock', which I just couldn't be bothered with after about 30 minutes or so. And a lot of the films on the list I actually like. Most of the I own on Blu ray. But I certainly think that they're overrated, at least by some. But, yeah, I'm in agreement with some of your comments above. 'Titanic', for me, only becomes interesting once the ship starts to sink. The rest is a turgid slog and it doesn't feel in any way authentic. I just don't buy Jack and Rose's "romance". But once the ship hits the iceberg, it becomes a horror film that's genuinely scary in some places. 'Top Gun', which I've seen twice, was always just baffling to me with regards to the respect it gets. It's bloody awful, with terrible characters. Especially the central character of "Maverick", who's never anything but an absolute arse. But that was the period that Cruise was at. Most of his characters at that time were just really awful people. Of course, you don't have to like a central character. In fact, you don't have to like any character in a film. But it helps if the story is entertaining, which 'Top Gun' isn't. The sequel was a big improvement, though, even if it has its own problems. As an aside, 'Top Gun' has nothing to do with the Vietnam war. It's set in the 80's.

Last Crusade...oh dear. Since I first saw it in 1989, it's always been a film that I've wanted to like more than I can and there's certainly a lot to like in there. Bu the comedy efforts just destroy it for me because they're not funny or even humorous. Those scenes are just stupid. But I did see a fanedit of it recently that cut all of that nonsense out and it elevated it immensely. But it's still the worst of the trilogy for me. The preceding pictures are just far, far, superior. And if I think that Last Crusade is overrated, Temple of Doom is very underrated.

'Citizen Kane' is a peculiar one and it's a film I've seen many times. But its story was never really that interesting. However the film becomes very interesting when you find out how it was made and the efforts that went into crafting it. The tricks in front of and behind the camera are fascinating and if you get the chance, it's well worth listening to Roger Ebert and Peter Bogdanovich's commentary tracks. The greatest film ever made? No. But that's an impossible title to put on any film as far as I'm concerned.

Apocalypse Now.

Watched it long time ago when I was much younger. Didn't think anything of it. I watched it again a couple of years ago - an expended version (to see if there was anything more interesting added to it, and basically to see if a more mature me would appreciate it more). I found it really boring in most parts. Basically men on a boat heading down the river, with crazy looks on their faces.

Loved it, but the extended version was worse.

I watched it a second time as people were raving about it at the start and I thought maybe I’d missed something- but nah I didn’t enjoy it.

Inception, and yes 'I get it'. I got the storyline. They literally invented a character who asked 80 (no joke - 80) questions during the movie so that other characters could explain the plot to us (Ellen/Elliot Page). That is not a good script.

Any of the Disney stuff doesn't count for me. For good or bad, that was George Lucas' story.

yeah thats what i thought it was but it made no sense unless it was some sort of in-joke, shes married to Paul W.S Anderson. The W in this case doesnt even stand for Wes

Agree with Tony eh re The Shape of Water. Awful film. Dr Zhivago is one I feel is overrated. A lot of those epic type films are hard going.
