I hope so. We're in August now and I can't see a major breakthrough happening this year. Russia will keep flooding the front line with reserve's until winter set's in and Ukraine will probably stop attacking for another year.

A sobering thought that the war rumbles on for at least another year. I hope we don't get mass missile strikes on their energy infrastructure during the winter month's and late as usual their allies send more air defence systems. The time to send them is now.

This war it at stalemate now

Russia can continue to throw fodder unlimited at its defence lines without any notable public opp and the west will still only drip feed, f16 and ATACMS is a joke should have started 1 yr ago.

I think an negotiated peace will prevail.

Russia, its citizens and others half worlds pop stood behind this genocide

Western democracies and useless UN want to treat all equally is its failure, China is in the queue to do same with Taiwan.

The west stayed united for the most part but needs to take care of its own citizens not listening to George Soros and his ilk.

    Have a good day.

There's always a very simple way to end the war - Russia can stop the invasion and withdraw their troops. It's not good for Putin, but their reasons for starting the war were completely bogus, so they can end the war by declaring "mission accomplished".

A negotiation suggests Russia should gain something out of this - they shouldn't. They lost this war the moment they started it, but it'll take them some time to accept the fact. And any negotiation will have to come with guarantees for Ukraine, because Russia can not be trusted to hold on to any agreements.

And it is up to Ukraine to decide if they want to negotiate or not. At the moment neither side seems to be interested in negotiations, so that's not going to happen (for now at least).

..this is all just repeating the obvious, but maybe a reminder is necessary?

May depend on the purpose of the brief. US tactical/ operational commanders don't track personnel casualty numbers on either side for two reasons.

    1) It's extremely hard to get an accurate count. Tanks, CPs etc, those can be counted. And generally you can assume degradation equal to the number of major end items destroyed. Kill 30% of the IFVs and the chances are that the infantry unit are at 70% strength. (Either you killed a proportional amount of personnel, or the personnel have no vehicles so the combat power drops anyway.

    2) It's irrelevant. What is important is what remains in the line in front of you, folks already hors de combat can be ignored. Face 2100 man brigade. Kill 700 of them, 1/3. Then overnight they replace 350 men. The commander will care that enemy strength is 1850, (5/6), not that more than that got identified

Agreed but it's not a stalemate in terms of both sides being spent. They're like boxers standing in the center of the ring throwing everything at it.

Unfortunately for Ukraine Russia don't value soldiers lives. So Ukraine makes small gains and takes a small village but Russia throws waves at it to take it back or stop the advance.

So Ukraine either settles for no counter or they're forced into a war of attrition.

And what does this peace deal look like?

Putin and his cronies get to keep the land they stole illegally and ride off into the sunset without being held accountable for all the war crimes they committed??

Is that what you think should be the peace deal?

Zelenskyy doesn't have the moral or legal authority to concede any land to the invading scum. Who would be the next for a bit of land grabbing on the back of slaughter? There is a distinct possibility of a type of civil war if he tried it, of course he knows this.

Also the idea that Putttin will take a slice and be content with that is hilarious.

Russia will continue to attack and try destroy Ukraine by every means possible before more than likely going for Kyiv again. Citing Mormons or Nazis or whatever scutter the drunken masses will liberally ingest.

Ukraine have no choice, they need to drive them out or they will never know "peace", unfortunately unless something radical happens it could take years.

I'd be thinking that Ukrainian army will be planning ahead and figuring out how to exploit winter conditions that will come. Ukrainian units will be well equipped for winter conditions and if managed well, have good solid morale with a sense of real purpose. Russian troops will be suffering again a long way from their home territories. Vegetation will die back, allowing greater visibility for both sides. Freezing ground may facilitate the crossing of some areas that are no go at the moment and therefore less protected.

On the home front, we all saw Russian tactics of civilian terrorism last winter. Ukraine will have learnt from this, diversified energy sources as much as possible and will be in a better position to defend important infrastructure with western air defence systems. Russian on the other hand is ripe and open to waves of Ukr manufactured drones that can attack various civilian infrastructure across multiple cities and towns. They may not do lasting substantial damage but the Russian public will be rudely awoken.

    "Saros and his Ilk..."

You were already doing well creating a typical Kremlin-sponsored "Stop the War!" post, but you just had to top it all off with that nice little bit of "Globalists" antisemetism to sweep the legs from under your own post.

There is no stalemate. The Russian's have been attempting to break through and failing (their northern push was defeated after a few days and is back to the previous lines) and the AFU are making a gradual advance across exteemly difficult conditions without air support, but they are advancing. Coupled with the huge logisitical headache of having several critical bridges taken out, the Russians are playing a zero-sum game of trying their best to hold on as much as possible...knowing that they have a finite amount of useful troops and useful equipment.

Sueing for peace now is only for the benefit of Russia, because it is them who cannot afford to continue this indefinatly. A peace deal with Russia should of course eventually happen, but the terms must be different to what Russia-fans expect. A complete a total withdrawal to the 1991 borders is an absolute requirement, as it should be, but thereafter the Russians will have to negotiate the price they must pay to re-enter the civilised world.

The days were Russia can level a demand that a country cannot join NATO or the EU are over. They can never do that again. The poster-child of Finlandisatrion, well....Finland, has gone to show that appeasing the Russians has a shelf-life and that giving them the finger and joining the defensive alliance is something you can do. The Russian Bear is now all roar, with no teeth.

They still pose a threat, not least to Ukraine while they still occupy a chunk of it. They will need to be somehow demilitarised. But this needs to be done carefully, the demilitarisation of Germany post WW1 set the stage for WWII. Germany had to be paritioned the second time around, which did create the prosperous NATO-membered West-Germany, but also generated the volitile and militaristic East Germany. These lessons from history need to be taken on board when attemping to de-fang a defeated Russian Federation.

Probably worth pointing out that George Soros is 92: so may we all live as long and be as busy & productive as Soros is, if you believe the cliché Conspiracy Theorist. Man sure gets about for a nonagenarian! Better enjoy the theory while it lasts cos there can't be that many years left at this stage - I guess ... I dunno, Bill Gates will take over from the 1st year undergrad level of paranoia.

I'd be more inclined to think that Zelensky would not be the one looking for a peace deal, under any circumstances until the last Russian has left Ukraine.

He needs to get full control of Ukraine so he can join Nato. Joining Nato is the only thing that will keep Ukraine safe.

In the previous incidents (ww1 /ww2) lessons were learned from ww1 and applied after ww2. The difference between post ww2, and the present war is that both Germany and Japan were totally defeated, and the allies had total control. This is not going to happen in this case, ( unless Russia itself is invaded, and I can't see that happening) But Russia can and will be ostracized, and economically and financially, they will be destroyed. That's happening already. So fast forward, Putin is defeated ( and maybe even dead) so what happens? He's replaced by one of the Silovicki, or the country descends into chaos, from which it will have to find its own way out of. Bottom line, this problem is one which Russians themselves will have to solve. And the West will need to strengthen and protect itself to guard itself against any future Russian ( or other) murderous adventures, and especially while Russia is in the throes of convulsions the aftermath of the war will bring.

"obviously they don’t have 2 billion tanks "

    Said as much there tbf.

Beau had a chat on this exact point that might be interesting here from 6 days ago, pointing out the why and how of people knowing pretty damn accurately how much battlefield inventory there is:

Argues that the media accounts, especially those followed by journalists are 'mostly accurate' with the caveat that in war nobody is neutral.

Seeing it mentioned a bit more. Fingers crossed.

Listened to a sobering episode of War on the Rocks podcast yesterday. A very good point was made about how the seasoned Ukrainian soldiers in the east with older equipment are performing much better than the newly trained troops with the Western equipment in the south.

    Other interesting opinions were -

    • That F-16s will not likely not be the gamechanger people hope for
    • There Russians appear to be rationing artillery. They still haven't a lack of equipment but are suffering ammo shortages at the front

    I find this quite worrying.

A potential Russian nuclear/chemical decontamination (used for decontaminating troops) unit destroyed by Ukrainian FPV drone close to the front, first one seen in Ukraine. He also says it could be a laundry truck, but I doubt that the Russians are doing any trench laundry.

I hope Putin is defeated and the next administration in seeking forgiveness for the sins of Putin, releases lists of all the Putin actors all over the world.

Go one better and show how the money fed into their accounts.

And sure enough, any mild criticism of the "original" Dambusters is greeted with apoplexy in the Conservative British press, but doing that sort of thing nowadays is a war crime. Here's the Daily Telegraph quivering with rage about the BBC daring to call Operation Chastise "Infamous".

BBC apologises after presenter Sally Nugent calls Dambusters Raid ‘infamous’ (telegraph.co.uk)
