Eg what's the capital limit for social housing ,eg if I sell my house for 85k can I still apply for local authority housing ,

I know the income limit but not how much savings you can have in the bank to still be

allowed on the council housing list ,

Would I be removed from list if I receive 85 k from buyer

I sincerely hope that noone with 85k in the bank ( after they sell their house 🤔) qualifies for social housing. If they do then the social welfare system is a complete joke.

If you have an income and around 85k in the bank after selling a property there is not a hope in staying on the housing list.

Probably not as straight forward as I'm imagining but why sell a property, bank a wedge of money and then expect the taxpayer to house you?

Yes you can stay on housing list OP - savings are only relevant to the social housing income assessment if they generate an income for applicants, by way of dividend or interest.

Sometimes people sell property because it's too expensive to do all the repairs necessary to make it liveable to a normal

standard let's say one partner dies the widow make not have the funds to do all the necessary repairs .

I'm not a finance expert I presume you'd get a few percent interest on 85k if you put it in a bank

I have a question.

We currently have 21 years of our mortgage left and with both of us earning around 120k a year together.

House was built in 2020

Our house is 100k in the plus based of same house sold on the street this year.

Can we sell the house, pocket the 100k+, one of us quit of jobs and jump on the local authority housing list?

I think there's some scheme where you can sell your house and rent it back. Works for negative equity only and is assessed for suitably financially struggling people only.

@riclad There are grants available to upgrade houses from the goverment. You can get a credit union loan, get the work done and then government will pay out the grant.

I think it's 20k - but check with Citizens Information. (Most people here are giving their opinion on how the system should work, not facts.)

But if you are already on the list then I think your bank balance only becomes relevant at the time you are being offered a specific house.

The OP doesn’t fit there. There is only mention of income on the page but I really hope savings are taken into account when checking for eligibility.

If this ends up the case, I see this as an opportunity of all of us to cash in on our properties and let the system pay all of us instead of us suckers financing the system.

I can have nothing in the bank and finance Council housing while people in council housing can have 85k the bank.

I can certainly see a situation where someone could own or inherit a house that isn't suitable for them to live in for some reason; too far from their work and with no opportunities in the area, too far from other relatives that they are caring for, too small for their family, is uninhabitable and they can't afford repairs, etc. If someone is on the housing list due to low income, then suddenly having some money from the sale of a derelict or rural property isn't really going to help them in the long term; sure, they could theoretically live off that money for some time, but it's not going to increase their income or allow them to qualify for a mortgage, so unless it's enough to buy a habitable and suitable property outright (which €85k likely wouldn't be), once those funds run out they'll be right back in the same situation as now, being unable to afford a private rental and facing homelessness.

Very simple , if a person is on a low income , And the house is deemed not livable ,eg it needs various repairs and has no power connection ,

eg its not safe to live in ,then they have the same right to be on the housing list as anyone .

You can get livable houses in country areas of the country for 85k. Why don't you buy one of these houses instead of wanting a council house.

They won't be palaces but liveable.

@riclad, you seem vulnerable and not able to stand up for yourself. The builder is trying to take advantage of you and will likely try to intimidate you to sell the house at a fraction of its market value.

- Go to the guards

- Call into Citizens Information for advice

- Do you have a relative who could help you?
