Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan will bring the draft report of the first All-Island Strategic Rail Review, which makes 30 recommendations, to Cabinet later this morning.

This review wants faster speeds, improved frequency, and new rail routes for people and freight, particularly across the west and north of the country.

The recommendations span a period of over 25 years, but a number of proposals could be implemented before 2030.

These include taking more trucks off the roads by building the Limerick to Foynes railway and starting the South Wexford Railway between Waterford and Rosslare Europort.

There is also a suggestion to develop a rail line around Dublin Port.

The reopening of the Claremorris to Athenry line, along with the Antrim to Lisburn line with a station at Belfast International Airport, is also recommended."

Wow, what great ideas. If only they would have been as obvious to the government as they were to everyone else when they shut down all those lines and sold off the infrastructure 15-20 years ago.

If they want railways to be built - remove the need for railway orders from the current planning system, and have a very streamlined way to get them going.

Electric overhead wires, double tracking, signalling improvements - should all be internal to the railway company. The need for planning should b restricted to the actually affected infrastructure - such as bridges, and access.

The planning system is killing the buildout of infrastructure. Coupled with inflation, and nothing happens.
