Yeah Root done by the pitch. Must have kept 3 feet lower then he expected it to.

The most one sided day of the series. England have given themselves a chance of beating the weather.

Bucknor, Bowden, Bird, Shepherd, Venkat are just a handful of Umpires I can think of who wouldn’t accept these constant delaying tactics that Australia are engaged in. Interruptions are beyond tiresome now.

delays because of problems with their…

    runups..

    footwear..

    faded pitch markings..

    tapeing for various body parts..

injuries - you have a fûcking 12th, 13th man etc for a reason…. Have a footwear issue, go off too.

also the multiple occasions delaying for drinks between overs. Umpires did I recall tell one runner to get back to the pavilion….

Please god the weather doesn’t ruin this test match. Fascinating to see how it unfolds. Really want and England win so all to play for next week.

Delighted for Crawley after so many poor scores.

Downside of that is that it gives the set batsmen more time to settle & recover. If they kept hustling & things moving, might be more in their interests to get wickets.

I just think the loss of momentum negatively impacts the batting team… standing around, having to refocus…

weather forecast has seemingly improved tomorrow just an odd quick shower. But other days not so good at this point of the forecast..

I wouldn’t be surprised if after a regulation first 40 minutes if both are still at the crease, Stokes and or Brook tee off…be a bit watchful, get a 90 lead and then put the foot down…

cant leave it to the weather gods… even with 3 days left, England need to put up these runs, take 10 more wickets and potentially chase whatever target. And there seemingly is a fair bit of rain disruption on days 4&5.

England hold the aces, I think an Australian win is a very remote possibility, biggest English enemy is the weather, gotta make hay while the sun shines…..

Australia really up against it, yes it was a good day for batting, England really have had the luck with the conditions in this series, Australia will be hoping that the conditions come to their rescue because it seems that's the only thing saving them from a defeat. England were excellent yesterday, stunning batting at times, Crawley rode his luck many times but once he got the century he really took off.

I felt a three innings match wasn't possible but given how England batted today you couldn't rule it out. England could keep batting tomorrow, build a sizeable lead and then put Australia in and try to make inroads into what has been a somewhat frail batting line-up but a team that is probably a bit demoralised now and then finish the job on Sunday. It's a bit risky because of the weather and England have to win. It's more likely they'll want to get a lead of 150 then get Australia batting ASAP.

Starc's injury looked bad, he may not be able to bowl, Cummins looks tired and worse his captaincy suffered big time today. Australia are really feeling Lyon's absence. The senior batsmen need to deliver a performance in their second innings.

If England win here, they will have all the momentum going to the Oval, particularly with the short gap between matches.

England should probably just declare now. Weather around today and into the weekend.

Aus has showed an incredible inability to stay in. I know they are a good team, and perhaps they are just having an off series, but to me, they have played really poorly the entire series so far and it is more than to England's mistakes than Aus beating them. England could very easily be 3-0 up at this point. In saying that, I fully understand that you can argue that about almost any sporting contest.

Aus don't really seem to have a plan A, never mind a plan B, and they were well beaten in the last test and save for the weather look set to be well beaten in this test.

toothless in attack and lacking in any form in batting. Never a good combination.

I think fatigue is definitely a factor. They're playing a six test series if you include the World Test Championship final in a pretty short period of time. They are flagging atm and need their batters to stand up today. If they escape with a draw only thanks to the weather, rather than a decent rearguard, I think they'll get well beaten at the Oval.

The two most important rules in cricket (in no particular order)

    Catches win matches

never, ever, write off the Aussies.

26 runs scored this morning, 200 lead looks inevitable...Big job ahead for Khawaja, Smith and Labuschagne in particular.

England to declare when they have a 200 lead?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭MFPM

Cummins removes Stokes for 51, Aussies playing quite negatively, they haven't taken the new ball and fielders on the boundary.

lead of 200 looked a formality but need a bit of tail wag now. Woakes isn’t exactly Brian Lara but that shot 🫣

Two quick wickets with the new ball, they delayed taking it, not clear why. England's scoring has dropped but is still a decent rate. Seems to be a bit more in the pitch which will be a boost to England chasing a win.

But why would they take the new ball? When clearly they want Eng to bat as long as possible and play for a weather driven draw.

Was listening on BBC TMS while working outside and they had some co commentator on a similar theme - she was wondering why Aus weren't trying to polish off the last 3 quickly!! Why on earth would they?

Lead of 189. I'd say they will declare at lunch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,764 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Should just declare now at lunch

that way they won’t lose two overs / time for the change of innings later…. Know it’s only minutes but it might be necessary.

Surely the weather is the only hope for Aus now and why shouldn't they take advantage of it? Eng have got the best of the bowling & batting conditions so far and speculation that it'll cloud over again this afternoon and get muggy. So Aus need to play to keep wickets today, probably no play tomorrow and then take their chances between showers on Sunday. English bowlers have it all going for them so far in terms of weather conditions. Aussies have no hope of winning this at all.

I’ll be pissed if the weather turns out to be the final deciding factor in the result of the Ashes. Everyone deserves better than that.

forecast needs to improve though over the next hours for the days ahead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭dohboy

Don't really blame the Aussies for taking advantage of the weather at this stage, but it feels like they've been playing that way since the first ball was bowled. They had decent batting conditions available to them on day one, and plenty got starts but didn't kick on. There's still time to assert themselves in the second innings, bat well and earn a draw rather than sneaking one thanks to the weather.

Are they waiting for Bairstow to get 50? !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,364 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

The one time I think he actually should declare and he doesn't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,340 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Anderson coming out so England opting to be bowled out rather than declare it seems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,395 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Definitely waiting for Bairstow to get 50!!!! Ridiculous and perhaps shows that Stokes/ Eng have a fair idea of where this match is headed.

Edit: Oh I give up - Stokes must have got a bang on the head.

Don’t understand why England are batting on….get bowling ffs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭dohboy

I assume England must know better about the weather over the weekend. Tomorrow is a write off but maybe Sunday is better? My apps say by not much...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,764 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Maybe, I hope so. This is a super inning by JB. Needed probably.

Won’t exactly be a gook look is he gets a ton and the declaration comes immediately.

Lol, after all that he's stranded on 99. They should have declared an hour ago.
