I assume your response was, the meter had load balancing.

It was my response and the answer I got back was that "it wasn't fine" and he also claims that they bypassed the meter in some way... Now I'm not entirely sure in what way because my car charging was definitely appearing on my bill

He has some fcukin neck to go disconnecting anything in your house. I'd have told him in no uncertain terms where to go, cheeky bastard🤬. What type of chargepoint have you got? It obviously has load balancing as you've seen it working as demand gets higher. Can you reconnect it yourself? That's what I'd be doing.

Ah yeah, and blow myself to kingdom come, no thanks haha! There's 2 things that I won't touch for the purposes of DIY, one of them is anything electrical

I sent on the details including Mr ESB mans contact details to the installers who are sending an engineer before the weekend so should be sorted then

Folks, have been reading back through a few pages of this thread but couldn't see anything really relevant. What is the current average cost of a home charger installation? I got one price from a well recommended installer so far and waiting on a few other installers to get back to me.

The price I got is €1330 +VAT before the grant for a Zappi with a 6.5 meter cable tethered. It will be run from the meter box on the side of the house as the C/U is located at the rear opposite end of the house to the driveway. That price includes a surge protector but no priority switch added as there is only one electric shower in the house. Is that an average price?

Sounds like you’re lucky to be still connected to the grid. Either he doesn’t know much about EV chargers or your installer doesn’t know much about electrical work.

It’s probably quite close to an average price now given the way EV charger installation rates have risen in recent years. Obviously the grant means they have to declare all the work and they’re more than making up for it. If you can find a regular electrician willing to install it and charge you based on time and materials, it would surely be way cheaper.

That thought had crossed my mind as well, possibly lucky to be alive

Thanks, unfortunately trying to get a spark or any tradesman to do any job in my area these days is a challenge in itself. Most either have plenty of work already or want a week's wage from even the most basic of work. Supply and fitting one stop shop suits me but just want to make sure I'm not paying over the average for the convenience. I haven't even decided on my next car yet but given the choices out there it probably will have a plug of some sort.

Was he an actual ESB employee or a KN gobshite? I didn't think ESB fellas ever left the van. Any chance you could put up a few pics of the install? What make of chargepoint is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,894 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I didn't think to ask at the time, he came into the house to install the meter so that would suggest by your logic that he was an ESB employee.

In any case the installers are coming out to fix it tomorrow so I won't go mentioning their names

It would be good to see a before and after picture so we can understand what exactly was wrong and how they fixed it.

Hi,Just noticed my EV is pulling 7kw when my 9kw electric shower is on. Main fuse 63 amp. EO mini with load management. This doesnt seem right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,537 ✭✭✭Buffman

Depends, your shower might not be pulling the full 9kw depending on settings, try it with your shower at max hot temp and max water flowrate and you'll soon see if there's an issue.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

I thought the electric shower pulled 9Kw regardless of the water temperature selected on the dial, more or less water passed through the heating elements.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,678 ✭✭✭joe1303l

CT clamp not installed correctly or some setting not right possibly. Get your installer back to sort.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,537 ✭✭✭Buffman

Depends on the model, but in general if the shower has low-med-high buttons/dial then it will have multiple heating elements, so the 9kW is a maximum rating, not necessarily constant.

For 63A, 220V-240V is between 14-15 kW, so plenty of scope for the car to continue charging at 7kW if the shower isn't pulling it's max.

The T90SR I have pulls 9kw irrespective of where the mixer is turned to, this is according to my owl monitor which is surprisingly accurate, nobody uses it in position I it's too 🥶

So is the Zappi Pro the “best” option for app usage and future solar panel installation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,527 ✭✭✭✭ted1

That can’t be right. The heating element is the largest draw. And the pump in it isn’t rated for 9kw I doubt it is even 1.5kw

Karcher power hoses are just above that

Anyone know the best tarriff for night charging with Electric Ireland on a smart meter MCC12.

Home electric plus night boost looks the best.

Pictures of the job which took 2 hours and 20 minutes including the online submission which he did while he there. You can't see the input cable because its drilled from the rear of the isolator. It doesn't like just "thrown on the wall" or substandard job to me.

I'll put a shed hook above the charger to hang the cable as the cable is too long (7m) to wrap around the charger. That will cost perhaps €5 when wallbox cable holder is €45!

Ecoplex - Wallbox for €550 after grant.

Easygo - Zappi for €799 after grant.

Nice neat set up. I’ve also had full chargers installed in less than 3 hours. 1 hours 50 minutes was the quickest, for a straight forward one.

One thing I would have changed is to use a more discreet modern colour isolation switch.

    I have something like this.

But listen, I’m just being picky for the sake of it 😁

Only if I'd known what colour/size isolator he was going to bring or if you had shared that picture earlier :)

Fusebox is on the left side of the hallway. Trunking from the left to the right of the front door along the ceiling and the down to the point where its drilled to the outside. I'd have preferred if it was fished thru the ceiling (and not trunking). He tried but there were joists etc the way. Its tidy enough anyway.

Very similar to what was done with mine, my installer wouldn't entertain attic, ladders, anything like that, I wasn't that bothered tbh it just needed to be done.
