I don't usually breakfast, but I had two toasted brown bread slices with some marmalade. And now I feel like going back to bed and falling asleep.

Granola.. Begging the question of the difference between it and muesli 🤔🧐

Granola is simply baked muesli. Crunchy texture rather than soft.

I wonder where did the word BREAKFAST come from. Was it a nutritionalist that came up with it and who was interested in losing weight. Those of us who eat late in the evening/night and eat a lot are not really fasting over night - we feel so full for hours. So in the morning we are not really eating during breakfast time to BREAK FAST because we had NOT REALLY BEEN FASTING.

Unless you eat in the night time when others are normally sleeping, you are breaking a fast when you eat your first meal of the day.

It comes from middle English. There were no nutritionists at the time.

This morning I had a fried egg, two smoked rashers, a slice of brown bread and a cup of coffee.

Nice healthy one this morning. Eggs fried in feta and chili oil and crispy bits, folded into a wrap and then fried again.

Slow-baked sausages, grilled bacon, poached eggs and toasted waffles with a big dollop of Kimchi so sort of healthy. 😋

@Gloomtastic! you really need to grill or oven bake those waffles. They look a bit limp and soggy 😉

Cannot poach eggs for the life of me, especially one that turns out like that. I usually end up with egg white that looks like it’s gone through a shedder and a sad little yolk floating on its lonesome. Have tried all the tricks too, vinegar, swirling the water etc. Frustrating.

Those waffles were grand but thanks for the tip.

I’ve no tips for poached eggs I’m afraid. Those eggs were really fresh (1 day old) and I just dropped them straight into simmering water but I poached shop-bought eggs which are about 2 weeks old recently and apart from more bits, they were fine too.

Both were room temperature, do you keep your eggs in the fridge @trashcan

I just used vinegar and water, bit of salt. Maybe the water is swirling too fast or the water is too hot? Either can break up the egg.

I've never figured out how to poach more than one egg at a time.

Swirl method works for me but just for one egg. Surely you can't do two eggs with swirl method?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,141 ✭✭✭Gloomtastic!

I’ve swirled the first one and then just dropped the second one in. Both were fine. It is an enigma all right.

Your x ray vision is excellent. What's the trick?

I was judging by the bottom edge of them. Look, my cooking skills are nowhere near those of you lot but i'm confident in my knowledge of frozen waffles😂😂

Yeah, I keep my eggs in the fridge, they probably wouldn’t be the freshest by the time I get to poaching them. Maybe that’s the problem.

I've been poaching eggs for 25 years (I Loooove poached eggs on marmite toast 😋) and tried all sorts of methods.

The method I constantly come back to is:

    1. Put some vinegar in a soup / dessert size bowl, just enough to cover the bottom, about 2-3 table spoons worth.
    2. Crack 2-3 eggs into the bowl with the vinegar then pour some more vinegor over the top and let it sit for 10 minutes. This helps to stabilise the eggs which hleps them hold their shape when cooking. You'll see the edges of the white turn white which is fine.
    3. Get a pot of water to boiling point then turn down to minimum so there's virtually no bubbles. The water needs to be reasonably deep, at least 5-6cm.
    4. Dump the eggs and vinegar into the bowl and let them sit and cook for 3-4 minutes depending on how you like your eggs. I like mine very soft. If you want after a couple of minutes you can swirl the water to make sure the eggs are being cooked evenly.
    5. Remove using a slotted spoon, place on kitchen paper to pat down and drain excess water and then serve.

You need to resist the temptation to turn the heat up as boiling water just jumbles the egg all over the place.

Edit: Should have just inserted this video!!
