I've had it done for work sometimes, the scan was of a large space, the the data was a little fuzzy and not as intricate as as 3D file. May need a different type of scan.

An STL file that somebody has create themselves for fun ad posted online is useless. I assume that is what they got stung by, and that's really their own fault and pretty foolish of them. There's been a lot of updates to the S&W 41, no idea if the updates ever affect the external dimensions. Probably moot and I doubt an official (manufacturer) 3D file exists.

I know UL and NUIG have 3d scanning facilities that offer services to public. That said, if you have an XBox Kinect , you can download the software to do it yourself.

Or another option if you have a tripod or similar is photogrammetry which can also be done as freeware.

Because I very recently had them take my money and it took 6 months to get it back in the mean time I just bought a 3d printer for college bits

It's about 2 years ago. Took about 2 weeks fir delivery. No issues.

At the time my understanding was that the company could also scan objects.

My suggestion was that the OP could contact them for advice. If in fact they only did printing then they might still know of another supplier that could perform scanning, as they are in that industry and someone had to scan or provide files for the shooting products they were selling.
