3d scanning of a firearm

Funny question for you all.

Is there anywhere in Ireland that does 3d scanning?

I know there are STL files of my firearm. (S&W Model 41), but long story short, i need to get my one scanned not one i can down load from the internet.

reason is a holster manufacture says they can make a mound from the 3d printed file, but it has to be from my personal 41, not a supposed scan to render off the internet. - they were already stung by a file that was supposed to be of some fire arm and it turned out that it was not a very accurate scan or stl file. End result as the actual fire arm would not fit correctly. They were out a good bit of money making the mound. So not taking the chance…

I've had it done for work sometimes, the scan was of a large space, the the data was a little fuzzy and not as intricate as as 3D file. May need a different type of scan.

An STL file that somebody has create themselves for fun ad posted online is useless. I assume that is what they got stung by, and that's really their own fault and pretty foolish of them. There's been a lot of updates to the S&W 41, no idea if the updates ever affect the external dimensions. Probably moot and I doubt an official (manufacturer) 3D file exists.

I ordered a 10 22 magazine coupler from these guys. Great service and it joined the mags tight as hell...they seem to print a few things for shooters. Maybe contact them.

Just get a Kydex holster made from Kydex Ireland? Why go through all that trouble?

I know UL and NUIG have 3d scanning facilities that offer services to public. That said, if you have an XBox Kinect , you can download the software to do it yourself.

Or another option if you have a tripod or similar is photogrammetry which can also be done as freeware.

FALCO holster, i have one for my model 17 from them - great product.

They don’t have a mold for a model 41, but can take a scan and print it out and then make the proper mold for forming the firearm. This happened previously and didn’t fit the other person cause they just downloaded a scan from the internet. Wasn’t very accurate. Cost them something like 200euro - wasted money. So they want to be sure it’s a proper scan and not a manually drawn stl file….

I know about the Kydex and a mate has one, but I’m afraid that the the kydex might damage the finish on the 41….

The Fallco one is a leather and as i say i have one for my 17 that i am very pleased with….

I’m amazed that i can’t get a leather one for the 41 (taking into consideration how difficult it is to get stuff from the States. And the ones that are available are ridiculous postage money….:-)

I actually have a holster for a S&W Vi=Cory - and i tried the 41 in it…it didn’t seem to fit. I might try it again. (The leather needs to be broke in for use).

Because I very recently had them take my money and it took 6 months to get it back in the mean time I just bought a 3d printer for college bits

I think you're missing the point. @dc99 is looking to have his pistol 3D scanned. Not have a part 3D printed. They are two different things.

At the time my understanding was that the company could also scan objects.

My suggestion was that the OP could contact them for advice. If in fact they only did printing then they might still know of another supplier that could perform scanning, as they are in that industry and someone had to scan or provide files for the shooting products they were selling.
