O shea point at end would have secured home preliminary and now looking like either trip to kildare, donegal or possibly Tyrone I'd say.

I genuinely didn't think we would win that even when we were a few points up. We looked very headless, running into tackles and seemingly allergic to kicking the ball and moving it at pace. Nothing learned and seriously lacking adventure when playing a blanket type defence.

Where are the off the shoulder runners from the league? We’ve nothing to our attack now unless we have bombs from Flynn or we can manufacture a free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 731 ✭✭✭Carol25

Confidence is an issue for the team at the moment. Attack wasn’t good. Jordan Flynn was outstanding and we still managed to lose. Losing concentration after the goal and allowed Cork up to get a quick dubious penalty changed the game. They’re still in it and could turn this around.

    Awful,

Totally switched off after only going 6 points up, then panicked when making shot selections under pressure towards the end of the game.

Nothing really learnt or implemented on the pitch after the Roscommon loss .

I don't see them turning it around tbh. Topping the group would have been a huge boost. To go from top to 3rd is crazy and they've only themselves to blame.

I’d be surprised if they manage a win next weekend

That's a red card all day.

Should still have been good enough to beat Cork though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,579 ✭✭✭Audioslaven

Loftus swung the game for cork by letting the cork guy through from an experienced player is unbelievable. He has no concept of what danger is.

Mayo are sitting ducks now. Just need a half decent team to put them out.

This result is about as bad as I can remember

Tyrone in Omagh might be the bullet. Tbh not sure I'd be that upset.

But they lost to Westmeath so we could be playing Galway if I'm reading things right...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,132 ✭✭✭Barlett

Well Galway is a real possibility now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Galway, Kildare or Donegal I think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 761 ✭✭✭RogerThis

    Where was Ruane all game?

I think I only was him once on the ball for the whole game.

Was he man marking or being man marked?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,579 ✭✭✭Audioslaven

I hope they don't get Kildare as this would be handiest draw. They need to be thrown in the hardest draw and play with a bit of pride for what they are wearing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,247 ✭✭✭PressRun

As it turned out, you're right! We're not in a good place for a game like that tbh. Any bit of momentum we had is gone and I'm not sure we'll gey ourselves up in a week for that sort of game.

No excuses Mayo didn't deserve to win but was that challenge in the large rectangle that conceded the penalty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 120 ✭✭Be-Jaysus

Loftus experiment may be on its last legs imo.

Getting carved open down the middle way too often now.

I was all for it at first, but he doesn't have a nose for danger and doesn't offer enough while in possession.

Wouldn't mind see Paddy Durcan given a go in that position from now on .

He offers more athleticism & aggressiveness to break defensive lines, but also knows when to sit put, or when to sniff out danger.

Mayo have enough scoring players up-field providing the ball is moved on quickly enough.

Tommy needs to start , Cillians experience badly needed too, given how we tend lose our heads when chasing the game.

Wouldn't be anything handy in newbridge given how absolute muck we've become last couple games

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,808 ✭✭✭Man Vs ManUre

Mayo extremely relieved to avoid Roscommon in the next round. Roscommon marching all the way to a 3rd Sam Maguire this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 107 ✭✭Ahshurlookit

Newbridge is currently a building site so Kildare's home game will probably be in Tullamore or Portlaoise

Nowlan Park, no? Or do they have the option of nominating a different ground for their 2nd home game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,351 ✭✭✭HBC08

Zero positives from that except we didn't finish 2nd so we don't have play at MacHale Park.

I hope we get Galway, we need something like a win in salthill to get the thing back on track.

Just back, the game was done and dusted when we got the goal, not sure how we concede 1-6 without reply in the last 20 minutes.

McStay and co seem to have backed themselves into a corner with Loftus, he was diabolical today, even withstanding the goal which was 100% his fault. It was obvious he should have been subbed 5 minutes into the second half but instead got the full game. It's pure stubbornness at this stage to persist with him. It's turning me off them as a management team that they can't see something so blatantly obvious to everyone else.

Carney wasn't at the races today either, stayed on the full game, what are they watching?

Lads blaming the ref but other than the punch everything else was fair enough, the penalty was soft but if you tackle from behind you can have no complaints. Like I said 100% Loftus's fault, you could see your man moving from way out, should have just been fouled, we'd literally just gone 6 points up

This is as bad as it's been because I think we have the players, there's no real standout team, the All Ireland is there for whoever wants it and instead we're shooting ourselves in the foot by not only have Loftus at 6 but compounding it by having to leave Hession and Callinan on the bench to facilitate this nonsense

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 862 ✭✭✭RedDevil55

Hard to disagree with any of that. You'd feel sorry for Loftus at this stage since everyone is talking about it.

Management seem to have staked the season on it, so I don't expect a change next weekend.

Stephen Coen was CHB in 20 and 21 when we got to all Ireland finals so I'd revert to that. McBrien full back and we've loads of talented corner/half backs to fit in around them. Diarmuid can drop back from midfield to shore up the middle too.

Do people think the midfield is a huge problem too, aside from number 6? Loftus doesn't have the positional sense or eye for danger to play that role, but additionally, the fact that we are really struggling to dominate the midfield battles in a lot of games is putting pressure on the backs and leaving us very exposed.
