The ESB are saying there's a surplus at certain times - which is good for people to know (use it or lose it will wind power). But you'll be charged the unit rate for the tariff you're on when you use it. So if you charged a battery on a smart meter peak-rate TOU that might be (guessing) something like 70c a kWh. Versus a fraction on a D/N night-rate. But for those on a 24hr tariff, it's good to use the grid then

Ah ok, I'm not on a smart meter so my rate is 24hr fixed but I'd like to start planning for the inevitable smart meter/agile pricing when it comes along.

Not aware of a peak events API unfortunately, but you can infer a lot of the information from the Eirgrid smartgriddashboard. I've created some HA rest sensors here:

If the % renewable generation is high and the interconnectors are maxed out exporting (negative value means export), there is likely curtailment of wind generation, so a good time to run appliances etc.

Similarly a demand event would be denoted by high demand (6,000+ MW), low % renewable generation (therefore high % thermal generation) and if particularly tight, large import over the interconnectors.

This is where agile pricing would be useful.

Yeah if there's a flexi event where there is "excess" and still on day rate. I ain't using it.

Step in the right direction though

True, but we know ESB don’t make revenue from that. They are simply telling people there is excess. For those on a 24hr tariff it helps. I’d expect the vast majority of houses are in that boat still. Smart tariffs on smart meters will change that in time of course. I’m pure guessing but most houses won’t have a D/N unless they have an EV, storage heaters, use a lot of juice, know a lot about their consumption and load shift…. I only know a few people on D/N (due to EV) or mates that mentioned they are on a smart meter – anecdotal of course.

If ESB added a 2nd line to those notifications that said ‘you may be charged a higher rate for electricity at certain times of the day. Please contact your electricity supplier for more info’ it let’s people know.

It’s deffo in pilot mode for now. But moving in right direction as you say. Maybe in time they’ll have it more targeted like an app with notifications. And you could set the sort you wanted. So if on a TOU tariff you might decide to suppress messages between X-Y hours.

They need to get the F on with it. Been in place in the Netherlands and the UK a few years now already. Can't wait to take 100kWh off their hands and get paid for it every time the price goes negative. And I would be doing everyone a big favour at that too.

it sounds mercenary, but your dead right. You are doing THEM a favor, albeit your getting paid for it, but yeah actually helping the environment AND being paid for it. Who'd have thunk it?! LOL

Yeah, that's how you get people on smart meters. Give some negative pricing.

Give me 50+kWh of storage plus 100kwh+ of EVs outside, I'll always take advantage of it. Take in the negative energy and sell it back during the day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,280 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Exactly that. If we had 100k of people like you and me doing just that, we'd save the tax payer billions. And of course have a zero or negative energy bill ourselves (after all our hard work and 5 figure investments)

Wait so if you're on the pilot you get charged more for usage at a peak notice? Maybe I misread, but I don't see how the could enforce that especially without a smart meter.

Again, it's been a long Friday for me so I'm probably making a hash of your post.

The pilot is simply communicating the event and suggesting actions. They then follow with a survey for you to advise if you took action. If you didn't/couldn't well you answer that. Those that take part are usually rewarded but it's completely separate to your meter and tariff. This is run by ESB Networks, not your supplier. Personally I got a one4all card, others have gotten a few, some had donations made in their name... and the lucky one or two had sweet FA. 🤣

I had 3 cards, all spent in Tesco on groceries. Now when's my bloody 4th card coming? 😂

Those that received a second card and more did you use different emails each time?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,344 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

    Same Email, same everything

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,109 ✭✭✭silver_sky

Same email. At one point they emailed and asked if I wanted to continue and I had to press the button and confirm my number. One4All arrived by email today and another email from them that they will keep sending the emails and if I answer 6 surveys I'll get another card. Also included was an opt-in for interest in focus group. Gave that a go also. Those are usually interesting and rewarded also.

Am on 4th voucher now which is class. And that unexpected amount helped fund me to 'play' with moving heating to a few low wattage electric rads this winter.

Havent had one in a while, Just got one today and its an "urgent" one from 2-4pm. Got it at 13:40pm!

Dont worry ESBN, I'll be exporting plenty!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,612 ✭✭✭DC999

Yeah, I wonder has something gone offline unexpectedly with the 20mins notice we got. If it did, then the pilot actually helps in that scenario (for those at home that have the option to not turn stuff on). Vast majority on the pilot won't have solar

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,344 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

Theres a second one! 4-7pm, unfortunately you'll not see my reduction in use this evening. [been using practically no grid since april.]

Wonder what happened.(edit... It says lack of wind)

From Twitter early this afternoon - looks like some unplanned / forced outages.
