No reference to DM intended. It's just an old Fiat 500 - my favourite!

I think he means there's scene featuring a similar car in one of their videos?

The Audi Quattro was revolutionary for its four wheel drive back in the early 1980s, and of course made famous for its rally car wins - and later in its leading role in 2000s crime drama Ashes To Ashes. 😁

Philip Glenister AKA Gene Hunt modeling the very Quattro that was the real star of the show.

The Renault Clio. Who can forget this below,

    Screenshot_20230606-124151_Google.jpg

It has given us the Awesome V6 and brilliant Clio Williams and 172 as well as the 182 all brilliant but then the 1.2 Clio was a brilliant little car too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

The mulitpla is definitely iconic. People will still want to see one decades from now because of it's funky design. Iconic is the word, not cool or fast etc.

Citroen DS. Most beautiful car of all time.

Iconic indeed! Equally iconic was Michelle Mouton, who helped make the car famous. The documentary Queen of Speed tells her story - it's on youtube and well worth a watch. Apparently it wasn't the easiest car to drive.

I think I have a thing for 80's cars, sleek understated design never goes out of style.

    LOL

Trail blazing certainly not, but blazing, oh yes, the Opel Zippo was notorious for going up in flames, including that car park that burnt down in Cork.

Three recalls later they still couldn't fix it.

The Multipla was so ugly it devalued your house if your neighbour bought one.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

Not a Fiat. Isetta. Built by a number of Italian manufacturers and then licensed to... BMW!

Edit: there were 3 and 4 wheel versions

They had character back in the day. Safety regulations has ensured they all look similarly bland these days.

Seems iconic is also determined by the era you were born into. Most of the iconic cars to me would be 80s/90s. While I get the whole super/hyper car thing, I never considered them iconic because they were unattainable. Iconic to me would be something most people could see them in a version of. So, to me, the main iconic cars are:

    6th gen Mitsubishi Galant VR-4

    Untitled Image

The precursor to the amazing Lancer Evo series, and a car I will someday hopefully own. Getting very rare. Immortal shape. I had an 8th gen Galant, and pined for the VR-4 version but finances didn't allow me. I will have a collection of Galants if I win the lotto. And a Starion.

    The Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R

    Untitled Image

While not the first Skyline or GT-R, it was the first for me and opened my eyes to the rest in the family, specifically the 3rd and 4th gen, sexy yokes. And of course the R33 and R34 were a teenage boys wet dream during those early Fast and Furious days.

Was gonna do a Civic one too, but shur no one needs reminding of that icon. Regardless of if you liked them or not, they are considered an icon within the driving community as far as I'm aware, and even going for stupid money, especially in the 'Mericas.

    Golf gti

    Typr r hondas

    Twincam toyotas

    Skylines

    Any evo

    Impreza's

    M3/M5

    Propper amg mercs

All iconic cars with fantastic legacies and I am sure I am missing plenty.

I've never heard a MK3 Escort described as either sleek or understated.

Didn't live up to either of it's predecessors and was eventually replaced by the Focus.

So, it was so bad it killed the name.

my vote for this honour goes to the ferrari 250 GTO. though it's not as iconic as the DS.

VW Beetle. They even remade it it was so iconic.

What about the Mercedes SL models?

All of them are iconic but in particular the early ones.

i would suggest that one useful way of defining 'iconic' could be cars which non-car people would recognise and like.

but by that measure, the two you posted are anything but iconic.

Ford Capri - a timeless classic

Feck, someone beat me to the Skyline. It's an icon for anyone who grew up playing GT or Need For Speed.

I'd like to mention the 240Z for being probably the first Japanese import to break the "econobox" stereotype they had.

"The Golf is a boring box on wheels...now the RAV4, that's an icon!" I suppose it was a harbinger of things to come.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,022 ✭✭✭Montage of Feck

The XR3i in black with red trim looks the **** and the escort went on for another three generations so hardly killed it. But to me it's a car that epitomises the 80's aesthetic.

    🙈🙉🙊

Hyperbole. Did he promote the cars? Sure. The engineers and designers are the ones that actually developed the technology, not Musk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,983 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Nissan is the reason EVs became mainstream, not a niche manufacturer of vastly overpriced tat like Tesla.

The original Ford Fiesta, everyone had one back in the day. Or the original mini, (much smaller than recent ones) : instantly recognisable and paved the way for small cars.
