Possibly , - i suppose a big factor is going to be civilians, and a will to keep inflicting damage , its probable that Russia could bring in some amount of supplies by air , and probably some by ships and landing craft - but not really enough for a large civillian population , and theres was a civillian population of over 2 million people , many will try and leave , but shutting down food and water supplies for eg 1 million civillians would be a PR gift to russia ,

Would the west keep supplying missiles , and glide bombs once the tv pics of hungry kids start showing ,

I cant imagine that ukraine will just trade crimea away - its critical to their survival,

But they may be waiting for a russian state collapse before they make their move.

I think i saw that a patriot battery is over 50 vehicles, which is why its not very quickly mobile

So even if a missile got through , its going to hit a couple of components at most .. (valuable components for sure )

Ukraine has 2 batteries and what ever the dutch are giving ? Hopefully they'll be up and running again quickly ..

Also how soon before russia runs low on kinzhal missiles , they're air launched so the ukrainians probably know when theyre coming and from which direction , and if they're targeting the patriots it makes it much easier (not easy ) for the patriots to shoot them down ..

So an awful lot of expensive missiles need to be expended to take out a component of 2 ,

The leaked US military reports suggested Ukraine were running out of missiles. Since then there has been an urgent push to provide Ukraine with western missile systems.

It's a fair assumption to make the leaked report was accurate.

A single patriot system is 3 vehicles no?

Radar, Engagement control system, actual missile launcher.

Judging by the explosion either no missiles were left by the time it was struck (no secondary explosions), or either radar or ECS got hit.

The Dutch gave two launcher tubes and a few other spares

Single battery can have up to 8 launchers.

There's no evidence the video shown earlier was a patriot system. There's also no confirmation how many launchers per battery was supplied to Ukraine.

There is a still image floating about (no clue in its authenticity) showing a missile failing from the reverse angle of the video.

    FwPMYr2WYAAMH3r.jpeg

Pac-3 (which if the picture poster earlier is correct) use 2 missiles per target, 1 to intercept the warhead and another to take out the remaining missile. If the second one missed, then you still can have a pretty large impact.

But in typical Russian propaganda, they will be pushing the idea of entire Patriot batteries destroyed to take the focus off their missiles being intercepted, especially the kinzhals.

Was exactly what I had been thinking.

Not sure if that is good news or bad, though.

I like the idea of MAD.

No I never said anything about them running out of missles in may the widely held consensus is that they only have 30 days supply of Anti aircraft missles at any one time,

There's not point saying Russia Lost 100 million dollars worth of missles but ukraine only spent 80 million in missles your math is probably way off too and another poster previously said ,

The issue you have you keep looking for something you can't find or keep claiming I said this and i said that like the leaks you mention every few days,

Does ukraine have a unlimited supply of Air defense missles.

    No -

    But, but, Russia , Russia

Ukraine does not have an unlimited supply of air defense missles, it's that simple

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,341 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

Nobody has an unlimited supply of anything so I don’t see what point you’re making there. But I think all of nato + ukraine has more rockets than the Russians do, especially high end stuff like the hypersonic ones they used recently. Can Russia even produce them under sanctions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,777 ✭✭✭timmyntc

A patriot system being destroyed obviously does not mean all launchers and radar and ecs destroyed. Destroying the ECS or radar would leave it inoperable unless replaced.

The missiles launched from that AA battery whatever it was, were clearly visible in the sky. There was no trace of either missile launch or AA missile falling immediately before the explosion on the ground.

Ultimately we may never know for sure as Ukraine will not admit if it were hit, and Russia will not post proof either.

If it is a patriot battery rendered inoperable, expect to see a more porous AA defence near Kyiv for the next while. If interceptions are still good, then it doesn't matter what was hit as they would still be doing enough.

    Time will tell

They’d get everything they don’t have from China etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 170 ✭✭WheelieKing

Be nice if that was true but come on it's just not, "100% proof"??

That's like me saying ive 100% proof i slept with Taylor Swift last week and producing a used condom.

Like it's a good system but the guy does himself no favours with that tweet.

Still would like the conflict to end. Don't care much if you believe me and I laugh hard at being called a tankie.

Even reading and posting on this thread is mostly to voyeur on the effect of propaganda and bias in the media, and of course the cognitive dissonance.

On the encirclement movement around Bakhmut one thing I've seen in a couple of analysis videos on Youtube that hasn't been mentioned here is that if one looks at the topographic maps, the recent local counter-offensive to the North of Bakhmut has gained Ukrainian forces some higher-ground that, once consolidated, should give them a good position from which to deploy artillery to attack Wagner forces in the city...

    Found one of the videos:

I've mentioned it before that even though everyone makes Bakhmut to be a non-sensical save, it is one of the last hilly areas before extensive flatlands to the west..

It's the reason why west Bakhmut hasn't fallen, the Russian's literally have an uphill battle.

blasts visible with same time between them from webcam elsewhere in kyiv.

Likely that one video is city center and other is outskirts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,844 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

The goal of the attack has been reached. All the assigned targets have been neutralised.

U.S.-manufactured Patriot surface-to-air missile system has been struck by Kinnzhal hypersonic glide vehicle in Kiev.

    Russian Defence Ministry

I guess they are kinda right, the Patriot missiles were destroyed 😂

But it gives the face now, they won't need to launch kinzhal missiles at Kyiv as they have already destroyed what they wanted. That will be their excuse if they don't want to risk the embarrassment of having their hypersonic missiles shot down again!

Everyone wants the war to end. How it ends is where the tankies are separated from functional adults. For me it ends when all of Ukrainian territory is free of Russian troops; those Russian troops/mercenaries and their leaders responsible for deliberately targeting civilians, for torturing and executing civilians and captured military personnel are handed over to the ICC to answer for their crimes; and Russia pays for the rebuilding of Ukrainian infrastructure as well as compensation to it's victims. How does the end of the war look like in your head?

I'm liking the trend lately, France following UK by sending long range missile's. Just what the doctor ordered.

Western fighter jet training commencing so only a matter of time.

Meanwhile some of the best air defence systems and armoured vehicles have been pouring into Ukraine and will continue.

Compared to 12 months ago Ukraine are far better off and Russia are far worse off. The fact they're now firing their most prized missiles at Kyiv tells you something. Only 10 million a pop aswell.

Russia won't be able to afford to rebuild this army over the next 20 years unless they want everyone living in the gutter.

I'm sure Putin and his inner circle of Oligarchs couldn't care less about the welfare of the serfs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,666 ✭✭✭charlie_says

Hopefully something like this: ceasefire, then negotiations about territory that are acceptable to both sides and realistic, some kind of security guarantee that is acceptable to both sides and neighboring countries.

Talking in absolutes is not the way to approach a discussion, people who do deals regularly understand this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,245 ✭✭✭Mike3549

Those blasts look more like launches, than arrivals to me. But I'm not a military expert. Just my 2c

People who do deals regularly are usually negotiating with someone they can trust, and not negotiating with a proven liar. How the **** do you trust the word of someone like Putin? You can't.

    No negotiation needed, just leave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,399 ✭✭✭Sigma101

    Go on then.

Tell us what "security guarantee" would be "acceptable to both sides"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,048 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

    Hopium nonsense.

Ukraine had such a treaty with security guarantees with Russia - Budapest agreement. It was Russia who repeatedly violated it and they were not deterred by promises of support from US, UK.

So what security guarantee, short of Ukraine in NATO, do you think Ukraine should find acceptable?

Because we've been here before, and it is Russia who repeatedly break these treaties and cannot be trusted to abide by any agreement.

Well, for people who do deals regularly - why would you trust a deal with people who regularly break the deals they sign with you?

    Well???
