Taskmaster is great for anyone who has somehow managed to avoid it all this time.

Hannah Gadsby: Something Special (2023) A panicky proposal. A novelty wedding cake. A fateful bunny encounter. Hannah Gadsby shares tales of love and marriage in this feel-good comedy special.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck (2023) Self-help books can fall victim to “delusional positivity”, says Mark Manson, but his 2016 bestseller – off which this pithy documentary riffs – is cut from very different cloth. Manson introduces us to its main tenets (learned via his personal history of failure) under headings such as You Are Not Special and Happiness Is a Problem. Featuring case studies as unusual as Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and a second world war Japanese soldier who never surrendered, he offers up his wisdom with a light touch

I wouldn't spit on that plank if he was on fire. It's bad enough Netflix waste money on some awful guff, but when they're lining the pockets of a vacuous twat at the same time, it's beyond a joke.

There's a McGregor documentary coming out on Netflix?!?

Well now I'm twice as glad I cancelled my subscription to that service. Really is a trashpile.

Though the regularity with which Netflix has been emailing me, pleading with me to come back, has only made me more glad to have left.

I cancelled way back in December and only just restarted it to watch the new season of a show I liked, but I really didn't miss it, and have already cancelled it again.

God forbid anyone make a documentary about the greatest fighter the country has ever produced, a man who went from the dole to being the highest paid sportsman on the planet. But I suppose he does punch down a lot ;-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I made no remark about his success in his profession, but by all accounts the man has shown himself to be a total àsshole. Which kinda makes it hard to cheer this self made story.

He's a decent fellow when the public persona is turned off. Extremely generous and charitable. There is a very long list of people and organisations he has helped. The insulting and the braggadocios behaviour was a huge part of his success in the actual fights. He knocked out the pound for pound best fighter on the planet in 13 seconds because he had manipulated him into the kind of hatred @TICKLE_ME_ELMO has for him, and the guy for the first time in his career got emotional, overstretched and got knocked out. The public personality is also hugely successful in the US market - who are the people who buy all the PPV's and all the whiskey he makes. These days you travel in America as an Irishman and Mcgregors name will get mentioned with reverence. The Americans love it. It was a truly brilliant strategy his whole schtick.

I think it's important to look past the surface which may not be to a lot of peoples taste with McGregor. Of course he has done and said some very questionable things, been very nasty to one ex training partner. Power and money does corrupt the mind no doubt. But the story, the climb to the top and the very clever methods to do it is intriguing no matter what your social views are. Likely it will be the most watched documentary ever made on Netflix.

Punching auld lads in the pub, racism and homophobia - a great bit of shtick altogether! Sure as he said himself as he was getting the head beat off him, "It's only business".

I caught Nobody recently and found it a frustrating watch. I posted about my reasons in the "What have you watched recently" thread so I won't repeat myself here. But it got me thinking about good recent action films, and I remembered Lost Bullet - a French crime/car chase affair from a few years back that Netflix picked up.

It may be partly lack of expectations but I remember enjoying it, so I am tempted to stick it on again and see how it holds up to a second watch. Anyone else got any thoughts on it, or opinions on the sequel (which I haven't yet seen)?

I don't care a jot about his fighting prowess because fundamentally find all professional fighting distasteful, but that's a further segue; equally this idea you have to be a performative díckhead to succeed. Smells too much like the Auteur Theory nonsense. And as another pointed out, McGregor's behaviour outside the ring has not been of a "decent" fellow.

Don't insult in trying to spin this as some measure of "social views", or make reductive snark about Elmo being "angry" ... but this is a simple metric of common decency. I know nothing of his "social views", but McGregor has behaved like a piece of shít outside the ring that perhaps he is, a piece of shít no matter how much money he throws at people (though that's better than punches I guess)

Is he also not famously a bit errr "handsy" to put it mildly as well.

    Grim, complete scumbag imo.

Off topic now so will stop.

But needless to say I won't be watching any doc about him.

McGregor is a publicly violent, cruel person who has, amongst many other things, been found guilty of assaulting members of the public and has numerous other assault (and worse) allegations going through the court systems. I don't care how successful he's been in MMA, how charitable he has been or how much shite whiskey he has sold to Americans - the idea that makes him somehow immune to criticism for thuggish behaviour on and off-camera is preposterous to me. They can make all the documentaries they want about him - people still have every right to think he's a horrible human being and even worse role model based on his own, extremely well-documented behaviour.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 24,023 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

Not sure judging a person's worth by how much the American public like him is quite the high bar you're implying there.

I had a lot of respect for McGregor when he was fighting, but since then his behaviour has been pretty low life thug kind of stuff. And I'm not talking about the bravado and nonsense that comes hand in hand with things like UFC or boxing. And for what it's worth, I come from the same social background as him, I'm not punching down, or being a snob because he's got a heavy inner city Dublin accent. He's just a d**k head.

The performative stuff, the proof is in the pudding financially being the highest paid sportsman. In the fight world it is a well heeled routine, even in the fake fighting of WWE since the 1980's. It's not a matter of opinion, it's been demonstrated by numerous fighters. People also pay a lot of money to see people they don't like lose.

I was not trying insult anyone, and it wasn't a reductive snark at all. Elmo is a great poster, usually very measured. And while I think his remark was very extreme indeed I have no issue with him saying it. Most of the forum agrees with him if not everyone judged by the 21 likes to the comment!

But you talk about common decency - you have as much bile and nastiness in you as any other human and you just direct it at people who disagree with your social views. You preach tolerance but are intolerant to anyone who disagrees with you, or has made a mistake and will freely insult. It's deeply hypocritical. People make mistakes, you mentioned your own recently. Lucky you weren't damned for eternity for your previous self.
