Good questions which I can't answer. They were all definitely Hans though. It doesn't make much sense to bring a full truck to Ireland if they have no intention of launching it

I looked at this car last Saturday in MSL Navan Rd. It is (I think) gorgeous on the inside even if the guitar strings is a bit gimmicky! I would struggle with the "build your dreams" on the arse of the car, but not a dealbreaker tbh. I'm more concerned with how it feels to drive and how comfortable it is. I've been waiting for the prices to come out, and the garage is supposed to be ringing me today with a trade-in offer on my car and to discuss prices. Hoping to take it out on a test drive this Saturday.

This will be my first EV purchase if I go for it. I'm currently deciding between this or a Toyota CH-R. I've been driving a hybrid Auris for 10 years and loved it. Besides the nerves around going fully electric (which are large!), I am nervous about buying a brand new entry into the market. I worry about costs to repair if anything happened due to potential short supply of parts etc. Also servicing costs and resale values.

EDIT: MSL rang and I'm booked in for a test drive next Wed. However, the prices they quoted are significantly different than the brochure that was linked earlier and the article in today's Indo: €40k for the comfort model (€37,596 in the brochure & article) and €41k for the design (€38,964 in the brochure & article). They have no active (entry level) models. I think this may be beyond my budget, it would bring the price €5,500 more than the CH-R.

From the article below - whilst it relates to the UK, obviously it will apply to Ireland also being RHD. Looks like we'll have to wait for the next gen versions of the Han and Tang.

In Europe, BYD will also sell its Han saloon and Tang SUV, both of which have 510bhp dual-motor powertrains. The Han has a maximum WLTP range of 324 miles while the Tang can cover 250 miles. Sadly, we won’t get either of those cars in the UK, as they’re based on the brand’s previous-generation e-Platform 2.0 which isn’t compatible with right-hand drive layouts.

The Atto 3 is based on BYD’s latest e-Platform 3.0, introduced in 2021.

It's usually 1500 for dealer/delivery and there is some room to negotiate that down. But over 2k is steep.

In fairness, the BYD website has the design spec as €40,949 so 41k would be the right price.

Dealer delivery = a wash and fitting reg plates.

Ive always screwed them down on this, although the last new car I got was just before the pandemic and subsequent supply shortages resulting in dealers not doing discounts.

I visited BYD south Dublin today for a look. They said the Han will be launched here in December, also the dolphin and seal should be launched in August. They confirmed the truck of Hans I saw on the M4 were press cars that were on the way to the K club

Not a valid argument to someone with a set current budget though.

People may be able to absorb costs when spread out as opposed to front loading. MSL price gouging to above 40k will, I feel, make people reconsider their options

Had a test drive on Saturday and the car is nice but I do think they're priced a little high and there was no budging on the price at all. At that price I'd probably go with a Model 3 over it, I'm not a fan of Tesla but it has better range and performance, and imo, looks better.

The sales person said the Seal will be in the 60s, that's mad money for what is their Model 3 rival.

The Seal that is planned for our market probably falls in between the standard model 3 and the LR. Close to the LR in range but closer to the RWD in power/motor configuration.

60k would be very expensive compared to a model 3.

Does anyone know what an Atto 3 and a Seal cost in other markets for comparison.

Chinese market prices:

BYD Atto 3 base model: €18,332

BYD Seal base model: ~~€28,512~~ €24,999

Tesla Model 3 base: €30,920

Model 3 base in Ireland: ~~€56,978~~ €40,332 so any €60k+ BYD Seal is unlikely to be the base model.

Price cut on the BYD Seal today in China,bringing it to €24,999

We'll have european pricing Aug/Sept and between the Seal and the (smaller) MG4 there should finally be proper competition to the Model 3, that is to say EVs with good performace, that are not SUVs or hugely overpriced.

Just shows you the nice margins available on EVs despite the manufacrurers' line that margins are squeezed to the limits and without Govt subsidies they would have no flexibility to reduce prices to make EVs more affordable. The reality is of course that taxpayer money is been used to unnecessarily supplement manufacturers profitability rather than reduce the high prices necessary to cover the high manufacturing cost of EVs.

In that context its interesting to hear Polestar offering to reduce the price of an over grant threshold car by the value of the grant. Seems unusual for a company selling on the margin to be so generous with shareholder funds. Be great when a realistic competitive market finally exists for EVs

Only Tesla and BYD are really making money from EVs, from what I read, they had scope for price cuts.

Polestar are still lossmaking and just announced a 10% workforce cut, they are hoping to be profitable by 2025.

No doubt there will be corporate casualties in the EV transition, I'd like to be able to buy from a company that will still be around to support the vehicle in a few years.

Ahh but you can get an ID3 for 43k and the Golf is 43k in the same spec, see EV's are competitive, sure an ID4 is same price as RAV4, who can't afford a 60k Jeep?

But that 20k Fabia, Polo, Fiat 500 you like, they can't be 20k in EV form, they 40k too :) Buy an 8 year old Leaf with 30mins of driving range instead
