I got a Solis system installed last week. Since Friday, it's been throwing a 'No Grid' alarm but:

    a) I haven't had a power cut

    b) nothing has tripped

    c) turning off battery + ac supply then back on again (as recommended by installer) doesn't help anything

It was running great for 4 days and then this so I've been getting energy only from the grid over the weekend.

Tomorrow I'm expecting to be on the phone half the day to Solis and the installers, but checking in to see if anyone has any pearls of wisdom or advice here.

Double check b) sometimes things trip but don't actually trip, as in the mcb or rcbo completely on or off.

Or could be a loose connection in the isolator like @DrPhilG had but that was after a year+ on his.

Thanks for the reply. Sadly not - triple checked everything and all switches are in the fully on position.

Just covering all bases here just to be sure, to cycle the mcb/rcbos to off and on again.

Time to get the installer out. Any more investigation requires removing covers etc.

Get installer out the change in weather a loose connection or similar

Can anyone with a solis 6kw invertor tell me what their device -> invertor -> rated power is showing? Mine is showing 3.6kw (all the time) which I think is a bit odd. (Array is 8.4kw)

It should match. Check nameplate on side of inverter to confirm you received correct model.

Mine is 6kWp. I've a solis 6kW Hybrid. Actual installed panels are less than 6kW.

It does sound like you may have a Solis 3.6kW inverter. As @Jonathan mentions, check the label on the side of the Solis. When was it installed?

Installed last month. Hybrid as well. Thought something was up alright. The really good clear days last week confirmed it for me. I was out of the country for all of it so will need to physically look when I'm back at the weekend. Thanks all.

Changed internet provider to Sky broadband today, which looks like it comes with the wifi bands combined, I presume I will have to split the bands, as Solis datalogger wont connect to the combined 2.4/5 bands or is there a way around this, as I know the wifi is less effective once split?

Or is there an alternative to the Solis datalogger system?

Just setup your Sky router with the same original SSID and Password.

But if something will only talk on 2.4ghz, it will ignore anything on 5ghz, so it's completely irrelevant to the inverter having both on the same SSID

Just make sure that the 2.4ghz SSID is using channels 1, 6 or 11 only.

I've also had this No Grid alarm a few times since the install in December. The solar switch in the consumer unit trips each time so it's a quick fix by just flicking it back up. It tends to alarm and trip 2-3 more times within about 24 hours and then it's fine again for another month or so.

Any idea what could be causing this? It's a bit annoying, especially if it happens while away from home as I lose out on charging the battery, heating water and covering the base load.

What is the max I can put on this inverter?

Have 16 X 375W Vmp 34.6, 6kW in 2 strings. If I add different power panels in parallel will it affect overall power?

The inverter is really only designed for a single string, prob better off just looking for a cheap second hand string inverter

But to answer your question, 11amps

I thought so too originally when installing and installed as one string on DC1 until tech support told me split the array in 2.

For anyone with RCBO's tripping, I had same issue with ground mount and tried everything from sealing every joint (every MC4 connector with silicone tape) earthing the frame and eventually swopped out the RCBO from 30MA to 300mA and not a bother since. Apparently it's earth leakage and can happen with some roof mounts too for some reason and tech support said yea you can swop it out but probably won't make much difference.

Mine almost always during heavy rain with wind, sometimes strong gusts with small bit of rain, one time while I was washing them with a hose. Since replacement not a bother since, 4-5 months ago now. Cost €160 but well worth it.

Nice tip thanks. I too have the same problem when it rains. I couldn't figure out what was happening, and it might only be a handful of times per year, but it was annoying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 374 ✭✭samdeluxjones

Did you get it sorted and was it earth leakage too?

No, never got it sorted. Couldn't understand what was happening, so happy to suffer with it for the half dozen times per year.

However, I'll look to replace it now

Yeah sticker on side said 3.6kw, rang installer and he said the lads are coming to swap out tomorrow. Specsavers booked for said lads... :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭silver_sky

Glad to hear it's getting sorted but one other thing to check is the NC6. Did they submit that with the 3.6kW inverter? if so, they knew and need to update that also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,579 ✭✭✭DC999

Jaysus, that's bread and butter stuff. Either they knew it was wrong and didn't care, or were just careless. Had you not coped it you'd suffer lower output forever more.

Our installer fitted the Zappi and then realised they ordered the wrong one and had to get one for our Leaf - basic logistics stuff that trips them up. But maybe they are making so much on labour that they don't mind the call back to site here and there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 636 ✭✭✭big_show

I already checked the NC6 form (I was cc'd on the mail to esb networks) and its gone in as a 6kw so that's fine. seemed like a genuine mistake but a costly one had I not copped.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,444 ✭✭✭championc

Emailed to ESBN? Didn't think they ever accepted emailed in versions. I thought they wanted and processed only physical originals.

    I'd be ringing ESBN 🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭idc

Emailing NC6 is perfectly fine, at the bottom it states

please return the completed form with the required attachments to: networkservicesbureau@esb.ie or  <postal address ....>

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,104 ✭✭✭silver_sky

I'd be giving ESB Networks (non-emergency number) a quick call to check the maximum export capacity for your MPRN. From what I understand the label for the inverter needs to be included also. If there's an error ESBN may not accept the nc6.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,444 ✭✭✭championc

Well by post, you get a confirmation reply when approved. I assume the same applies to emailed applications

I was already following up with esbnetworks this morning to confirm the NC6 was received. mine was submitted on the 20th of April and they have processed as far as the 18th of April at the moment. I'll try them later this week for a confirmation especially with the may 31st cut off coming up. I'll also confirm the maximum export capacity.
