Don’t you feel though that you could copy paste this post any time in the past 11 years and it would carry the same weight.

In 17yrs on the Motors forum I’ve never seen the hype around an upcoming car like the model 3, tens of thousands of posts across 3 threads since announcement in 2016, and yet Irish buyers simply don’t seem too fussed - indeed we’ve bought 1750 Yaris Cross this year versus 190 model 3 (which I’ll never understand btw).

see Tesla dropping prices again today in the US, the 2nd drop this month, which tells you they have a serious worldwide demand problem for their current level of factory production

If they announced the model 2 tomorrow, we wouldn't see it in Ireland for a few years, so I think cheap model 3’s will be around for a while yet.

Bear in mind it's not always a low-ball. I got a market leading trade in for my ID4 (from their associated trader).

To be fair, a base yaris cross is 8-9k cheaper than a base Model 3 as it's currently priced. It's only in the past 6 months the Model 3 came into the price bracket of a wider proportion of the population. Adding in the incredibly poor public charging infrastructure and it's easy to see why so many people are still reluctant to switch. The price of the M3 and MY could and should drop further if they want less wealty people to buy them new. The staple brands like volkswagen and toyota EVs are still very expensive compared to ICE. A lot of people want crossovers nowadays for practicality so if Tesla cut the price of the MY further then more people will buy.

There's the fuel price disparity of ICE and BEV relative to entry cost at the lower end of the affordability scale. If you charge your BEV at 24hr rates currently it doesn't really make financial sense for people to switch to a significantly more expensive ICE.

Tesla brought huge hype because of the supercar-like performance, features, different experience for relatively little money so it's understandable why people were so excited.

The government should pour some of this €16bn surplus next year into the charging infrastructure.

Unless they quote you higher than others. I traded in last year as they were the highest and bet a private market too.

    Always shop around of course.

I think they had to drop them because of the federal tax credit requirements in battery manufacturing.

They said they wanted a mass produced affordable EV and it’s certainly heading that way if not already there.

Yes, my trade in offer was a fair €30k for my ID.3 last year. Got more from VW who bought it back from me, but Tesla quote wasn't bad. Doubt would be near as good now though...

I got €38100 a month ago for an ID4 1st Edition I paid €41k for two years earlier. There are now two of the same model (albeit double or more the mileage) listed in VW dealers on Carzone for less than my trade in price.

Edit: that trade in equalled the max I was offered by VW in Cork. When I put it on Donedeal I was offered €39k by a Dublin VW dealer - bizarrely I reckon it was the same dealer that took it through Tesla.

I was. But having said that, if I'd been offered that trade in six months earlier (pre Tesla price cut) I'd have laughed at it so swings and roundabouts!

Yes, it's down to cost to change. I got great price last year for my ID.3, but my Tesla Model 3 RWD was over €49K. If only I had waited till early this year and sold my ID.3 at a lesser price and ordered a Model 3 for delivery around now. Actually I am happy anyway, had a great year in the Model 3.

But hindsight is a wonderful thing....😊

See Tesla have launched a LR RWD (instead of dual motor) variant in the UK, this will have increased range versus the dual motor.

    Business customers only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,774 ✭✭✭✭josip

Same battery (size & chem) as the LR or are they using LFP for that?

Has any other manufacturer in the past ever produced a car version with a limited market? What's the reasoning behind it? Limited supply so business only for now and higher margins?

Did anybody waiting on a new M3 receive a collection time? Thanks.

BMW done it with the E60 5 Series back in 2009. The created a “Business Edition” which got small screen nav, folding mirrors and a few little bits added in.

Its aim was to rid them of E60 stock and parts before the launch of the F10 5 Series in 2010. Not EV related but similar.

Tesla themselves also did it in Canada with a 151km WLTP Model 3.

the reasoning was to sell it below a certain price meaning the more expensive versions would qualify for a grant (to get the grant across all versions you needed a ‘base spec’ version which cost less than $45k)

I believe it was just a regular SR+ renamed the SR and software locked to 151km WLTP

To be fair though, the E60 'Business Edition' was open to all buyers but it seems in this case Tesla is restricting who can buy.

That Canadian variant is a strange one, Musk himself has said many times Tesla would never release a short range EV

Just for ref, when getting my 201 SR+ (manufactured around Aug 2019) serviced for a boot issue and rear harness recall, they included the retrofitting of working front fog lights as it must have been ordered when this was still a listed feature by the original owner. Somehow went three years without first owner noticing....

Ranger also improved on request the typical Fremont misalignment on left rear passenger door where chome was lower than that of panel behind it.

Great to have fog lights, even on a black SR+ where panels are not so obvious. Will test the minor difference of them on as get lots of fog in Co. Kildare.

I’d imagine they thought they wouldn’t sell many, but apparently they sold like hotcakes…. I’d say it was an easy enough limit to implement in the car with an OTA update to lock away most of the battery….

I can pretty much guarantee that in about 10-15 years those cars will have zero degradation!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,053 ✭✭✭sk8board

presumably it could be unlocked post delivery, you'd think anyway? Like all those e-scooters sold with MPH limiters :)

After last nights TSLA Q1 financials (Q1 price cuts drove margins down from 29% to 19%), and the current price drops pushing Q2 margins to 9-11% range, I'm convinced the price drops are here to stay. There is literally no reason to rush to buy a Tesla at the moment in the belief that the price drops are temporary.

As for the M3 refresh, I think Tesla will behave just like any car OEM and implement further price cuts after the announcement in order to shift the last of the 'old' model. Indeed, this current price drop may be an attempt to shift that over-production of M3 in preparation for the refresh.

Who is rushing to buy thinking price drops are temporary? Most people are buying to take advantage of the price drops and the full SEAI €5k grant before July 1st.

I didn’t say anyone was rushing to buy - indeed it’s pretty clear from the previous Jan price drop that no-one is rushing to buy, and I’m simply suggesting that will probably still be the case.

hard to see a glut of people rushing into a €40-53k purchase in order to save 3-4% (€1.5k).

the truth washes out in the beepbeep registrations, so it’s a moot point really.

According to Tesla they won't unlock those cars. They were only offered for sale to meet a minimum starting price for the Model 3, so that it could avail of the incentives there. I'd say they set it so low in the hopes few would actually buy it. As mentioned, you basically have a forever 150km range car. Grand if that's all that you would need.

Centre caps arrived from tesla. I have to say it's quite quick to get stuff from the webshop. I also got a bag on amazon for the aero covers to go into. It has dividers to protect them from each other. Not sure I'll leave them off but just wanted a change and nice to have options.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,197 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

In the 1st year or 2 I’d fluctuate between having the aero caps off and on….. if they were ever off they’d go back on for a long trip……

The last time I put them on was last summer before we drove to Lithuania, and I think they’ve been on since….

when washing the car it’s easier to clean the aero caps than the alloys… (so that’s my excuse)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,580 ✭✭✭eagerv

Ditto, used the centre caps for the first 2 weeks or so, was a pain keeping the wheels clean. Stuck back on the aero caps and they haven't been off since..

These are great. I have a set from AliExpress that I use in summer...still looking good heading into their 3rd season.

I bet this rep is fairly happy with their wheels.
