    Doesn't surprise me.

Even at the SDR in Carlow I get Algeria in the background.

Slightly off-topic here, but for the day that's in it - how many US presidents has the Clarkstown transmitter seen come and go through its various guises?

Bush Sr. was president when Atlantic 252 was officially launched. Then we had Clinton, Bush Jr, Obama, Trump and now Biden. That makes six.

When did the test transmissions take place? Was Reagan still president at the time?

My kids don't get and will never experience the simple pleasure of an introduction to electronics by building their own AM radio out of half a dozen cheap components...

@Hotblack Desiato there's still time to take them through it...

About 21 minutes now and neither of them is interested 🙁 there was an added thrill back in the day with pirates your mother wouldn't allow on the 'proper' radio

@Hotblack Desiato well you've still got BBC R4, 5 Live, Talksport and Manx. Do they learn Spanish at school? The RNE stations will be around for a while yet I suspect...

Yeah but they can stream anything they want, the point was listening to things other people might not have wanted you to 😉 when all is permitted and nothing is forbidden, the thrill is gone baby, the thrill is gone 😁

And I think few will get a thrill out of the shipping forecast, enthralling as it is...

At risk of saying "it's all to easy for kids these days" I'm trying to get them into Raspberry Pi stuff. But that's at least two levels of abstraction above what I was doing when I was 13.

Uh-on,here come the pips - and no Gladys Knight - LW still alive but for how long...

That would make a niche pub quiz question…

What was the last song played before LW252 shut down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47 siezetheday

Algeria is audible when RTE 252 has no modulation on the Ireland North West SDR, shows how weak the carrier is.

Well there's just 198 now and if that stops I'm ducking and covering. The usual rumours about how the Royal Navy subs use it as an indicator that the UK still exists...

    😮

Over half a minute of silence before it repeats again! The announcement may not be easily found on a dial tuned radio, if tuned during the long silent gap, even on a preset radio some may get the impression of nothing there if they land on it during the silence

The phone number for advice is announced as:

    "Plus 353 1 208 3434"

(no "plus" on landline phones, dial 00)

@Hotblack Desiato we should meet up for a movie night, take off all the doors in the house to build an inner refuge & watch Threads inside it. I'll bring the sandbags, some spare doors, iodine tablets and a copy of my trusty protect and survive leaflet... 😂

This SDR in Finland has an antenna which is making RTE very strong and Algeria weak. Also very strong reception of BBC Radio Scotland on 810.

SDXL-KB1 hosted by PSO. Supported by Finnish DX-Association.

Kuninkaankylä, Loviisa, Finland 🇫🇮 | Grid KP30fo, ASL 25 meters, [map], SNR 45:44 dB

Antenna: Super KAZ @260° with Wellbrook FLG100LN

I am surprised that none of the Radio 1 presenters mentioned LW today, i wonder might rte have told them not too? Ciara King who is doing late date tonight is a big fan of nostalgia and I was sure she'd make some reference to listening to Atlantic 252

Here's the retune loop on 567 back in the day, does anyone recall how long it lasted until the transmitter with switched off ? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=glh5Mqd4dAk&pp=ygUlUlRFIG1lZGl1bSB3YXZlIHNlcnZpY2UgYW5ub3VuY2VtZW50IA%3D%3D
