Taxes are wasted on plenty of rubbish in this country. In my humble opinion taxes to pay for connectivity from the more inaccessible parts of Ireland to and from the capital, helping to promote tourism and industry and provide jobs, is of benefit to the entire country and certainly not a waste.

Good news, I hope they're viable. I'd actually never heard of Quimper previously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,236 ✭✭✭lordleitrim

Same here. Its unusual also that Quimper and Brest are only approx 70km from each other. I wonder why two destinations so close together were selected as both being viable?

    Good and quite unexpected news.

Not clear to me if it’s one flight to both both Brest and Quimper or separate services. Not yet bookable on the Chalair website.

looks to be bookable now on chalair.fr, you’re looking at about €150 rt as a lead in price.

One flight to/from Quimper with onwards connection to Brest.

Fares are very decent, especially with luggage. Not bad for a week away in France. It seems to run from July to early September.

I hope it does well enough to operate again next year.

Very surprising for Kerry, however there's likely good inbound tourism potential there. Can't imagine many locals have ever heard of this airline, or even the places they fly to. I'd never heard of Quimper.

Starting fares back down to €19.99 again and available on most flights.

Wonder did a drop in forward bookings force a U turn on pricing..

Great news and great value at that price again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,478 ✭✭✭embraer170

The reality is that €19.99 fares are loss making in a big way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,236 ✭✭✭lordleitrim

Realistically though, won't it only be a certain percentage of seats (booked early) at that fare and the remainder at higher prices that ensure profitability?

Did the Ryanair flight to Dublin twice in the last month or so. Most of my business is in the city centre. It’s just easier to do the train, the hassle of getting up to the airport and queuing just means the train makes more sense, Not to mention the trek to the Ryanair gates

Also on another note. Has there ever been a shuttle bus from train station to airport. I often get train from town and the walk isn’t too bad once dry but a different story if it’s raining or lots of luggage

I’ve used to visit family- times suit me as don’t want to be up at crack of dawn. €20 return is brilliant and don’t fancy the 4 hr driving or train. A quick overnight and back to Kerry the next day. Know others who go to college in Dublin and find it handy

    I suppose horses for courses.

…. You could ring for an airport taxi to come and collect you… €5/€6 euro one way.

could never see a Shuttle working a profit running from the Station to Airport… wouldn’t think the numbers would be there. Can’t see Kerry Airport subsidising one either…….. taxi yer best bet

Not Kerry Airport, but I've seen someone on twitter talking of how they sometimes get the Donegal flight to Dublin to get to college in DCU! Takes them 2:30-3 hours in total (from door to door).

Absolutely spot on. If your destination is in or around the city centre, the train is an absolute no-brainer, despite its faults.

I live in County Dublin and make the trip monthly by car and I've often debated whether to take a flight a few times too but driving to Kerry always wins out. Either I pay 30-40 quid for taxi from the suburb I live in to airport or use the longterm carpark at DUB which you have to add 30 mins to allow time waiting for shuttle bus plus parking cost. Also while security processing times have much improved, I still allow myself 90 minutes before any flight to avoid stress of unforseen delays. You then need someone to collect you from KIR (20 minutes drive from where I stay in Kerry). All in all , it takes the same amount of time or longer. I can drive door to door in 3.5 hours if Adare isn't a nightmare.

If I only visited Kerry once or twice a year I'd maybe consider flying but as I fly to other destinations about 6 times a year, it would exceed my annual tolerance level of airport hassles/queues etc if I also started flying regularly to Kerry as well.

It's still a great and valuable service for Kerry though and long may it last.

how soon before outbound flight to Dublin can you check in in Kerry airport- booked a flight later in summer due to cost /time v train/drive but am seeing in places that you should turn up 2 hours before flight which takes away the point a bit- was hoping I’d get away with an hour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,478 ✭✭✭embraer170

    With or without luggage?

An hour is fine with luggage, and I normally feel safe enough turning up 40 minutes before without luggage (if checked in and going straight through security to the gate).

Without-just the small free carry on bag -cool that sounds more like it-

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 378 ✭✭Sikpupi

Was there recently..... it had Dublin, Luton & Manchester going out between 1045hrs and 1120hrs..... queues were out the door. It seems everyone expects that 40 mins is enough and so everyone was in the queue........ it took me 25 minute just to clear security queue and I had no bag. I then had to queue again at the Board Gates. I would recommend if you are using Kerry - get there at least 90-100 mins in advance. It's a changed place these days.... a number of Ryanair flights now clash on certain days and so you can expect to be queuing.

I have been using the airport for decades. Even in the difficult hours with a few flights leaving at the same, you will still be safe enough arriving 40 minutes to an an hour before.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,272 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Agreed, 90-100 minutes in advance is crazy for Kerry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 870 ✭✭✭technocrat

With so few flights in the day it’s ridiculous scheduling multiple departures at the same time.

I’ve been caught before when getting the 6pm flight to Dublin and a flight going to London at the same time, queue for security was snaking out the door.

With only 1 security scanner the airport can struggle to cope at busy times like this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,478 ✭✭✭embraer170

They have two scanners but use only one most of the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,615 ✭✭✭bikeman1

They always get everyone through. It’s only a few steps from the security to the steps of the plane. It’s not like a “normal” big airport in that regard. You don’t need to be at your gate 30 minutes before, they manage it very well.

I would disagree with your claim of redicolousness.

By scheduling flights in close proximity it can be a good use of resources.

    Note important word, can.

Sometimes it doesn't work, sometimes it does.
