If anyone watched Rock v Zaga, the Zaga out half is pretty good. Outplayed his opponent. Rock also have a serious unit at #8. I've watched almost every match and there's mad talent. It's frightening! I'm frightened

Ross Byrne has signed a new contract. That's Leinster sorted for the medium term post Sexton. Delighted.

    Delighted to see Byrne extend

Ooooof big front row and a 6-2 split on the bench.

Big test for Big Mike, Milne and McKee.

Part of me doesn't want to risk Jenkins and part of me wants him there to avoid a potential massacre in the scrum

I'm not sure there's much he could do to avoid the massacre in the scrums in this instance.

Decent side really. Stormers are stronger on paper so will need home advantage to see us through.

Interesting that Frawley is playing at 12 and they still chose Tector to play the 22 shirt

Is Frawley behind Tector in the depth chart for next Leinster OH?

The only senior players not picked who are fit and available that I can see are Clarkson and McElroy

Outside the front rows I reckon we're fairly evenly matched with Leinster shading it in some units such as half backs.

    Wouldn't dare call this one.

The spread has only changed a small bit with Leinster mild favourites with an 8 point handicap

No. Leinster are missing over 20 players, not exactly flush with options for the 22 jersey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,947 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

Not flush at all!!! No senior backs fit and available who haven't been named in the 23.

Other options here would be Cosgrave or Arenzana-King. But Turner and Frawley are good back 3 cover

Stormers coming in strong. What a challenge for Milne. Can we keep it close and get something from this? A lbp would be ideal.

A serious test for these lads. I'm surprised that Larmour is at fb. I think that's where he's most vulnerable. Tector must be chuffed! Getting into matchday squads against a quality outfit like the Stormers.

Who else would you select there from the available players?

Frawley covers 10/12 and 15 and then Tector pretty much the only other back-line player available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,448 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

Well you'd expect Harry Byrne to play the full 80. If Harry gets injured, Frawley could play OH so they could use the 22 jersey for a player who could play more than one position. Brownlee is a centre, Tector is an outhalf. Is Frawley covering for the wings and fullback?

As it stands, I don't see Tector getting any game-time unless the game is well and truly over or there are a few key injuries, in which case, that game time isn't much use for building up experience

Frawley can cover 15, and having guys like Larmour and Turner means there is coverage for the wings if we need to rejig.

Given Harry Byrne's injury track record, it's far from a cert that you could bank on him playing the 80, though he has been on a good run of games.

Back to the point made above - there literally aren't other options available - Leinster are down 17 players post the Irish game, with Ngatai & Osborne injured, and Tommy O'Brien literally just back in training this week.

I would have preferred for Frawley to start at 15, with Brownlee in the center and Larmour on the wing.

1-4 points outcome would be a great result tbh.

I think Tector got time at 12 last time be was in the 23.

I feel that Frawley is going to end up more of a utility back than a 10.

It's a decent team considering 20+ internationals are missing, but this going to be a tough night.

Odds have tightened considerably since teams were announced.

Yeah I think in a normal scenario you may be right but I'm not sure there's an outside back worth picking who isn't already in the squad. Its very unusual to not get the fringe Ireland players back but they've all been out celebrating!

in our back to back SA games we have Lions first.

I know there is a limit on squad size but assume thats just what will be paid for.

if Leinster wanted to fly in/out four or five lads for the first game to secure a home final out of their own finances surely that can be done?

Be a solid investment to secure a (potential) packed aviva.

Amazing test for these guys ahead of the SA trip. This is almost certainly going to be close to the starting XV v The Lions. Perfect opportunity to get ready for the tour.

    Stormers:

    • One out runners flat at 10, 12 channels all day - devoid of ideas outside of that
    • Manie Lebok kicks all day, backthree good at gathering and scoring off spilled ball
    • Very seldom if ever try setpiece moves or backline combinations off multiphase play, devoid of ideas if their one out runner or kicking game fails
    • Fourie might try and start a few fights - beware
    • Willemse good on the deck defensively
    • Stormers won’t come to slow down ruckball - big mistake
    • Leinster multiphase play will open gaps, Stormers defensively disorganised out wide
    • Back three of Blomettjies, Hartzenberg, Senatla are dangerous if given ball in open space - on the kick chase they can be lethal on spilled ball, disorganised in defence
    • Dobbo will be a good winner/loser either way

All in all I think it would be wonderful for the League if the Stormers came and won but I don’t see past Leinster putting 20+ on them. The Stormers are too one dimensional to say the least and if that gameplan fails they try harder at the same gameplan.

As was seen in Ulster earlier this season that can lead to big score line against them. I think Leinster will do the same. The flip side to that is that the Stormers can be lethal in broken play and Manie Lebok is exceptional broken field runner, but if the game doesn’t break up the Stormers could be in trouble.

Interesting call ups. I can't imagine any will make the 23 for the Champions Cup, but it would be great experience for them all the same.

We've a few injuries at hooker and centre so makes sense for McCarthy and Cooney to get up to speed at least.

We get an extra allocation in the knock out rounds right?

Or have we registered these fellas in place of others I wonder

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,920 ✭✭✭✭stephen_n

How many in the squad, that’s a bit odd since I assume Foley and McCarthy are already in the squad.

I think you get an expanded squad for the knock-out stages , so I don't think these guys are replacing anyone.

Yeah you can add three players, one of whom must be a front-rower, for the knock-outs. No need to deregister anyone.
