I think we need the full quote:

“Even if it is not great for the show that the same guys win all the time, it is because they have done a good job and we haven’t,” the Mercedes team principal said. “We shouldn’t down talk it, because I remember hearing questions like that between 2014 and 2020. What makes the sport so special is that you need to work hard to win and you deserve it as a matter of fact. Entertainment follows sport, it is maybe not good from the commercial side but it is what makes F1 so special.”

You mean people are selectively picking out quotes without context?

I'm so, so surprised by this.

Just watched the 1995 Pacific Grand Prix in full. I loved the smaller nippier cars and the sound is great - particularly the scream of the Ferrari V12. The race itself was actually quite boring, overtaking predominantly occurring due to pit stops and differing strategies.

Martin Brundle was actually on co-commentary with Murray Walker which surprised me as I didn’t realise he had done so before retiring from F1 at the end of the 1996. Turns out he shared his race seat at Ligier with Aguri Suzuki that season and that was one of his races off. (Link if interested https://www.grandprix.com/news/brundle-returns-to-ligier.html )

He came out with a great scathing put down of the Forti team during the race. Their cars were lapped 5 and 6 times each in that race, no issues they were just genuinely that slow. Brundle chimes in with “I think they’re called Forti because there appears to be forty of them, you’re coming across them every lap”

That's the reason the 107% qualifying rule came in for 1996, to keep slow teams like Forti out of the race.

That's a pity. Am i right that Red Bull is partnered up with Ford for 2026 anyway?

Watched a sim comparison overlay of the AM in Bahrain. It compared last years fastest AM lap against this years.

Time difference is 2.5s quicker this year.

Drivers were Alonso this year Hulkenberg last year.

Corner exits seem to be where they gained the most (maybe alonso is better?), fast corners were improved, didnt look like there was anything major in straight line speed.

Well Alonso does bring 6 tenths to a team so maybe that's part of it. 😋

    Yes you are right there.

I guess no one else interested Porsche

    That's a pity.

Yeah but it's a big ask to jump into F1 and take a majority stake in thr winning team. Audi took a far more realistic approach by taking over a midfield team in Sauber. I mean, why on earth would Red Bull sell up now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 485 ✭✭guyfo

Not really, I'd far rather only have more outfits like Cadillac come in for some varied competition that actually bumps up the grid size and adds something than lose a team with a soul so VAG can have 4 cars with logos on the grid.

Porsche also joining would be a situation of "which Volkswagen subsidiary should I support?"

The choices... how would i ever make such a tough emotive decision!

Porsche wanted a majority stake, this caused RedBull and McLaren to go away. Still puzzled that no word from Williams, they are a vulture fund anyway so should be interested.

James Key leaves McLaren, his executive role is being split into 3 separate departments.

Deck chairs on the Titanic spring to mind.

    This too shall pass.

So I see that Christian Horner was on Ian King on Sky News this morning.

    Here is the piece,

That is only availible for another 4 or so hours I think so best to watch it sooner rather than later if you want to see it.

Funny I do not remember them having Toto Wollf on when Mercedes were dominating.

    Typical British jealousy.

When Sky emphasise Mercedes, they're wrong. And when they emphasis red bull, they're still wrong. Maybe they should just focus on Haas for the rest of the season and only mention the top few cars or british teams and drivera in passing.

Next up is Melbourne, followed by a four week break.

Australia 2nd of April, Azerbaijan 30th of April.

Would have been handy to replace the Chinese GP, 4 weeks is a bit of a slog.

I doubt it. They need to sell the tickets but they also need all the administration side. Arrange all the services that go on around a race weekend. I'd say these things only work well if they have a year to get everything organised and choreographed.

They could cobble together a disaster of a race with a poor customer experience and paying premium because they need everything in a hurry. Who would volunteer for that?

They could hold another race in Melbourne. A candlelit reverse circuit race.

This break is a bit too early but you know with this really long season, maybe it's no harm that we get two breaks during the year instead of just the usual summer break. Could be something to consider going forward, particularly in switching continents.

    This too shall pass.

    Just seen this,

    only right.

    There is a saying.

If you have got nothing good to say then say nothing at all.

Well that's what he should have done there instead of saying the horrible things he said.

They managed to put a race calendar together in 2020 even with the covid craziness, so no excuse for not finding another venue. 4 weeks break this early in the season is daft.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,635 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Were there fans at that race?

It's not as simple as racing 20 cars. They have to make money too. Back in 2020 there were no fans and the FIA paid $5mn so it was profitable and came without all the administrative bits that it takes to actually make it profitable. If you put up the $5mn then they would make the race happen in a couple of months.

We'd all prefer if there wasn’t a break but organising a well run, profitable race probably takes far longer than they had to fill this gap.

They chose not to replace the China GP which was decided well before the season started. Was hoping they'd put Portimao on the calendar to fill the gap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,801 ✭✭✭Big Pussy Bonpensiero

Except they knew even when they announced the calendar that it was unlikely to go ahead. And it's not like they haven't had more than enough time to find a replacement since it was cancelled. I remember discussing this a good few months back, discussing the likes of Portimao, Istanbul, Paul Ricard and Malaysia as possible replacements. The reality of the situation is now that we're faced with the first of two four-week breaks.. That's crazy for a top level sport to not have any product on show for two full months during the season. And a knock-on effect in a decline in viewing figures would be a logical conclusion to two month long breaks. I can't think of any other top level sport that has such a long break during the season, and it's not like there's F1 every week besides.

Ah, I don't think you're giving credit to how hard it is to organise a huge event for a quarter of a million people over a weekend. The covid races didn't have fans so they were just a matter of getting the track and garages ready and having the marshals and enough emergency crews for the 20 drivers. The money came from the FIA directly. Relatively simple.

If they need to fund through ticket sales then they need to arrange to sell the tickets and liase with government to arrange transport, hotels, police and emergency services for the hundreds of thousands of fans and service staff. You need hotels for those hundres of thousands of people who will arrive for the weekend, food, permits for this, applications for that and so on. It just cand be done properly in a fee months without someone paying for it. You'd be a fool to host a race without ages to publicise it and guarantee you sell all the tickets. The risks are just too big.

Portimao was never a suitable venue for a full race. The track is good but portimao doesn't have the facilities for a quarter of a million people. They could come from Faro I suppose but if you've ever been to the track, it's up the side of a mountain on small supply roads.

will be interesting to see if there are many tech leaps after the 4 week break

You'd imagine so. 3 races and a month to get upgrades ready it would be great if the other teams could close the gap to red bull but I think they're untouchable. Mclaren need some big improvements to fix their problems.
