Reminded me to sign up for Vodafone actually.

They won't go any less than the new customer rate of €79 per month for 12 months for 1GB BB and TV and VF are slightly cheaper than that at the moment. Would switch to partner's name again if we were going to stay.

What number do they call from so I can ignore it.

Just got off the phone there. I had been paying 46 for 9 month and then 92 for the last 3. Told them i wanted to cancel. They offered 77 for 6 months and then 92 for the other 6. THey said they couldnt do anything more as I'd just come off the 50% a few months ago.

Told them no deal. THey dropped to 46 x 6 and 92 x 6. Told them the 92 for six was a killer as Eir was was 50 a month. They read me my notice info and sent me on my way. Will be moving to Eir.

After 5 years ftth has finally arrived at the ranch😊 some bargaining power for the battle in May when my contract expires.

  • Registered Users Posts: 288 ✭✭BhoyRayzor

Cancellation gone in and I'll be following through this time.

Even if they were to give the 9 months half price would average out at €43pm for the year compared to €35pm with Vodafone, guts of €100. Was told they don't do call backs anymore but presume just part of the spiel. If they send a text won't bother calling them back either to ask again for the 9 months.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 6,542 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

Cancelled nearly a month ago, no calls.....moving to a better deal with Vodafone for gagabyte BB and TV and neighbours who have switched say it's a more reliable service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 568 ✭✭✭EarWig

It's really countdown to when they will be forced to reduce prices to fight competition from Eir's urban rollout. Can't be more than a couple of years away.

Recently got a deal: 1GB broadband at 9 months half price (€40)

  • Registered Users Posts: 252 ✭✭kenn0

was just on to Virgin there

    offered me

    €89 for 9 months

    €104 for 3

Sky sports €20 on a 30 day rolling contract

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Their usual opening gambit 15 a month off, tell them to shove it, it's half price for at least 6 months or nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭raxy

I was just on the virgin website planning on signing up in my wife's name. They're offering a 75 one4all but also charging an activation fee of 30 which wasn't there before the one4all offer. Typical virgin bullshit.

In the end I've now signed up for three 5g broadband. Hopefully I don't regret it. I know a couple using it & they're happy with it so fingers crossed. It's a 2yr contract so if I'm not happy I'm screwed.

You've your 14 day cooling off period to try it out for yourself at least.

Left VM in April of 2022 and went to VF. Broadband only, 35 a month, 500 mb broadband. No issues with it for the year, called to give 30 days notice to VF on Monday and got same price for another year with zero hassle. So much easier than the year BS from VM. Hopefully more keep leaving as Siro rolls out more.

I cancelled Virgin near the end of last year, as we had to move out while getting some work done.

Can sign up again as a new customer using my wife's details. But we can also get Eir/Vodafone/Sky etc. now up to 2BG (on Vodafone).

Any recommendations on deals or who has a better service? Will be getting Broadband only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭CoBo55

I paid the activation fee last year as a new customer, no voucher offer though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,261 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

VF 500mb for €35. Has been fine for me for 12 months now. Sky have broadband and sky q for €38 too which I'd have gone for if VF hadn't played ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Think I'll go with them now that ftth is finally available 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭raxy

I paid it last year as well. Think I got a €50 card then. I'd looked up the plans a few weeks ago & the deal was 44/month with no activation fee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,512 ✭✭✭Wheety

You can get a a free TP Link Smart lightbulb and TP Link Smart Plug if you sign up through bonkers. Same monthly price. Vodafone seem to have a few offers around. I'm just trying to find the others.

I backtracked with the 5g broadband & signed up with virgin again.

I never received any confirmation from 3 about my order placed at 11am yesterday. Did a chat there to ask when it would be ready to use but they couldn't say. Asked me to wait 24-48 hours for them to review it & see what they say in the confirmation mail when they send it.

We work from home so have to have broadband sorted by mid next week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 288 ✭✭BhoyRayzor

Got the text today, must be programmed to go out about a week after cancelling. 'We don't want to see you go...ring 1890940199 to see if there is anything we can do' despite the fact I told them what they could do to stop me cancelling in the first place.

I won't bother this year, already have Vodafone organised to be installed in a couple of weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,253 ✭✭✭Billy Mays

    Rang the 1890... number there

Woman told me they could only offer me 6 months half price. Told her I know for a fact that people are being offered 9 months half price, got put on hold while she spoke to a supervisor 🙄, came back 2 minutes later and offered me the 9 months.

Job done in 7 or 8 minutes 👍️

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,094 ✭✭✭JohnnyChimpo

I just rang, spent a few minutes wrangling to get the 6mo half price, asked the operator to go check if they could do better (I accepted 6mo half price last year but this year I'm more than happy to switch). The dude wouldn't budge, so I proceeded to cancellation. I'm sure the fact that I accepted the offer last year creates an anchor price for them that I'm apparently willing to accept, so I made sure to bang on about tough financial circumstances, price-motivated, etc.

So either they ring back in 14 days with 9mo half price or I sign up to Sky and get a better deal overall, I'm fine either way. It's actually pleasant to go into these kind of interactions when you have two equally acceptable outcomes

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,094 ✭✭✭JohnnyChimpo

As expected, they texted today (Wednesday) after cancellation last Friday. So I rang the number, asked for 9mo half-price, was put on hold for 5 mins and then got the OK. So, the battle is done until next year!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Well done, I'll be entering the ring next month 😏

What’s the craic with the Vodaphone setup?

    What hardware do you get?

I’ve had virgin media since it was cable link and haven’t changed but have always rang looking for a discount.

I don’t want to bother with that this year so I’m looking at alternatives.

I don’t have an eir line into the house and I presume vodaphone comes in via 5g or whatever?

We’ve two working from home and on top of that two kids with iPads so I wonder would the vodaphone setup be as reliable as virgin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭CoBo55

If VF say you can get 1or 2gig speed you will get a fibre line into the house, drilling etc will be required, you also need two available sockets, one for the termination unit and one for the router. My next door neighbour got it installed on Monday, your man was messy enough with the install, it wasn't great that night she was saying, it kept dropping the connection, think I'll stay with VM...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭Islander13

Same, best offer 45 for 9 months reverted to 60. So cancelled. Within 5 days got the text, simple call, they suggested 30 for 9 months. Bobs your uncle

I tire of this messing every year. I am on 112 per month at present and am not in the mood for messing again. They offered my 15 quid discount and I just said cancel it. I use firesticks most of the time and wifi for data. Accordingly, I am now considering a clearmobile sim in a router. 12.99 a month and it will do me fine. I installed this setup up a mountain and it works. Unlimited data but capped at 5meg speed. For 12.99 a month, I will put up with it.

If they call me, I will do a deal, but seriously, I could not be arsed any more. I am to busy for farting around argueing with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Life's too short for 5 meg "broadband" believe me you won't be long getting sick of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭mondeoman72

True, but most of her time I'm on my phone and Gomo hits 30 where I am. I'll just put up with it

  • Registered Users Posts: 5 not that afraid

Anyone get a voucher for installation recently? Filled the online registration and waited to hit the place order button as someone suggested. Got an email with contract outline but no offer of o4a voucher. 50 quid not too bad when you add it to the 59 over 12 months but still seems steep for them just sending out the new boxes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭tb66

Rang 3 weeks ago to cancel, was offered €15 off for 9mths then back to €60. Nothing else on table so cancelled.Signed up for Vodafone, still waiting on installation, as ESB have to connect cable and they didnt know when that would happen. Rang VM today,as it expires on Thurs to see what they would offer(was gona renew regardless cause I need bb) 6mth half price straight away, asked him to do 9mths half price and I will renew then and there."Have to consult supervisor" and 30secs later ..done..

Gona let Voda install anyway and then cancel during cooling period.Next year at least the cable will be there so switching should be seamless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Good idea if it works out, I can't see Vodafone being nice about it though. When does the cooling off period start?

14 days to cancel without penalty.Vodafone may not be too friendly next year but providing they leave the cable connected to the Siro network theres always Sky or Digiweb aswell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭CoBo55

But when does the 14 day cooling off period start? Is it from when the order is placed or the day of connection?

I rang yesterday to find out when my contract finishes and got 6 months half price offered straight away😊. I'm out of contract in early May I'll ring back then and push hard for 9 months.

All their competitors are nearly half the price, they have to be loosing customers.Just have all your price comparisons to hand.Vodafone dropped price to €30pm when I called them and included 3 add-ons aswell!

  • Administrators Posts: 54,087 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Going through this shambles at the moment.

They are hard work this year, I've never had to push so hard to get a discount. They offered me a tenner off for 6 months initially ffs, wanted to laugh at the guy down the phone.

Ended up getting upgraded to 1gb and getting 6 months at half price, but had to do quite a bit of pushing for it.

They gave me the entire spiel about SIRO, oh they share with Eir, oh they'll have to drill, oh but that price they're offering is only for 12 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭raxy

Don't bother with the hassle, just cancel & sign up in your partners name.

1GB is 80/month so your deal is going to cost you €720. If you signed up as a new customer it would be 54/month plus €30 connection fee & you get a €100 gift card (atm anyway). That would cost you €578 for the year saving you €142 compared to the "deal" they gave you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Or stay on 500 with any of the ftth providers and never pay more than €35 a month ever again 👍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭tiegan

QUITE IMPORTANT - the cancellation email (cancel@virgin.ie) method of giving 30 days notice no longer is in use. As I found out to my cost. It was worked perfectly for the last few year, and was a hassle free way of cancellation. They stopped using this system sometime in February this year. I sent off my cancellation email as per in March giving 30 days notice and got a bill today. I got it sorted but a bit of a PITA. Now the only way to cancel is to ring customer service. They cannot do it over chat either apparently. Just a heads up for the frequent flyers on here like myself that avail themselves of the 5e/month offers as and when they offer them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,315 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Thanks for that. Think I'll get ftth installed and leave VM altogether, there are much better options available. I went fttc before and got an immediate cancellation when I rang as I already had internet sorted and could break my contract as there was an impending price increase coming.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 568 ✭✭✭EarWig

Thanks for that very valuable info.

Zero chance that I will return now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭raxy

I sent mine on the 28th Feb. On the 1st March I sent again forwarding the first as I didn't get s reply. I contacted virgin on Facebook & they told me to mail customer.support@virginmedia.ie & they told me not to worry that I will get a reply.

Then I got 2 mails with different cancellation dates a day or 2 after.

That was just broadband, maybe phones are different?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭tiegan

They told me both on chat, and on the phone that this had changed recently, may have been March not Feb - be interested to hear if anyone has done this recently and got it cancelled. I emailed them on 18th March to cancel.

  • Registered Users Posts: 168 ✭✭mileycactus

Just made the annual call, on 250mb BB only €60. Told them was doing bonkers switch to sky 500mb €30 a month. Offered upgrade to 500mb 9 mths half price and 70 for last 3. Tempted but after 8 years think I need to cut the cord and move to sky so I can switch every year. Asked for 12mth half price, no joy so gave cancellation notice.
