@Ol' Donie For what it's worth, and I don't say this lightly, I want out of the Europa League asap. Last thing I want is the inevitable two legs against Man Utd and the inevitable injuries/tiredness/worse things I don't want to say that come with it

I dunno to be honest. What about next season in the champions league (can I say that yet? Surely 22 pts ahead of 5th is enough regardless of games in hand). If by some fluke they managed to be in a similar position in the league just throw in the towel in the CL? Doing so by no means guarantees success in the league and like we’ve seen before a disappointing performance can set off a run of them and that’s the last thing we need. I’ve no problem with Arteta rotating in the Europa League mind but I don’t think he should or will think of it as a secondary priority

IIrc, Arsenal have historically had a tendency to collapse after cup defeats. Even this season, after the FA cup exit to City, it took more than 3 weeks to get a win, with 2 losses and a draw in there.

As much as I don't really care about the Europa, and especially of the nightmare scenario of going out against United again, I fear for the teams mentality if they do exit early.

Some folks really over think the possible scenarios in game, we need to dump the Europa to concentrate on the league but the players could have a mental breakdown if they lose in europa fmd

we are five points clear and in europa - let’s enjoy the good times z

5 clear with 12 games to go. If I recall correctly the 07/08 team got in the same position. Lot of parallels between that team and this one too, let’s hope the outcome is a little different!

And of course it's always good to avoid relegation where possible 😂😂

Should be a two horse race with Arsenal and City now.

    Yeah, looks like it now.

I'd say United's title challenge that didn't exist in the first place is definitely over.

United having some manners put on them here. I wonder does Gary Neville still think they'll finish above Arsenal.

5 now......this could well derail the rest of Utds season. Confidence would have to be badly hit.

They haven't been very impressive even when winning, so eventually they would have been caught, but they are really really bad today.

Don't remind me. That 2:2 game against Birmingham in the run-un still rankles. Apart from the horrendous Eduardo injury early on, we would have held on for a win but for a bad penalty decision late on against Clichy (which caused our captain Gallas to throw a strop and sit down in the centre circle). We went on a terrible run after that and faded.

I'd like to think if the same happened today, that VAR would intervene to overturn the penalty. At least, we now have a captain who is not a prima donna and puts the team first

Newcastle sniffing around Tierney again. £30m quoted which is absurd. Mad to sell him to them for anything less than £50m, they’re good for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 734 ✭✭✭al87987

£50m? Don't be ridiculous. We bought him for less than half that and he doesn't even start for us. I don't want this to be another Maitland-Niles where we turn down a decent offer and then don't play him or loan him out.

It is the going rate for class full backs though. Qualifies as home grown, only doesn't play because of our style... Definitely more than 30 anyway! I really like KT.

Tierney has made only four starts, 30m isn’t to be sniffed at and it will keep the player happy rather than holding him hostage for another few quid

I agree 50m is too much for Tierney but the premium of selling to another PL club needs to come in to play and considering we bought him for 25m, 50m is the number for me. Not just any club either but one who is (1) filthy rich and (2) likely to be a direct rival in the coming years. Have seen Chelsea spend £60m on Cucurella so would be pointing them toward that for reference.

if we’re going to go down the rocky road of doing business with Newcastle it has to be at a really good price and 50m is that.

£50m if you're owned by an Arab state and £30m for everyone else seems fair.

Once we’ve sold Tierney who are our options at left back if Zinchenko was to get injured? We cant be relying on Tomi to be our only cover for both flanks.

I think we should hold onto him, even if he’s not starting we’ll need him or somebody of his caliber next season when we’re playing champions league football.

The idea of selling Tierney without a ready made replacement being available is absurd. We need to be adding to our squad, not taking away from it. Tierney not only offers a close replacement in terms of quality but he also offers a different option to our attack mid game. We'd want to be getting way over the odds if we were to let him go to a potential rival.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,050 ✭✭✭✭L'prof

As far as I know that Polish defender can play on the left. Kiwior? Not saying I’d be happy to see Tierney go or that he’s ready to step up yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,217 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

Tierney is a great player to have in the squad, but whether he's happy to be a squad player is a different story. I don't think he is.

We also have to call a spade a spade: he is injury prone.

I think he'll probably move in the summer - I amn't the least bit surprised to hear transfer talk about him tbh - but, yes, you'd want to get a fair price for him too.

Don’t agree with dumping the Europa for the league because winning builds a good mentality which is important and also gives the subs game time to keep them game fit, with injuries these players might play a big part in the run in of the season. Reiss is a prime example and as stated previously the game at Birmingham ruined the team.

Nelson will surely start VS Lisbon now anyways. I'd go with Jorginho and Vieira too in the middle with Eddie (assuming he's fit) up top. Tierney given a run too at LB and maybe give Kiwior a start but I've a feeling we won't see much of him till next season.

    Turner

    Tomi Kiwor Holding Tierney

    Vieira Jorginho ESR Nelson ?

    Nkethia.

We would find it hard with that team if we go without first team players.

I'd say Odegaard and one of Saka/Martinelli will start tbh, possibly Martinelli up top if Nketiah is still carrying a knock.
