16 quid, into the supermarkets to stock up on cocktail supplies (vermouth, triple sec, tequila) which are horribly overpriced here, few pints and some fish and chips, grab some smokes on the way back and a bottle of Jack Daniels bonded......

Bus to Newry costs more and no duty free.

I've done this day trip a couple of times in the last 12 months. On the whole, it's a nice (if long) day out - realistically you won't be off the 8.30pm departure from Holyhead until 12.30am, whatever Stena say about arriving into Dublin at 11.45pm. Park your car for €9 for the day at the port. Duty Free Allowance into Ireland is not generous, but you probably couldn't carry much more anyway. If you know anyone that likes perfume, get it on the boat, I've never found anywhere any cheaper. I've never found that much to do in Holyhead - for a nice day out get the train to Conwy or Llandudno (about £15 day return from Holyhead). The Great Orme / seafront at Llandudno are nice but the town has quite a run-down feel about it. Conwy is a thriving little town with lots of small independent shops and cafes, but be careful as not all trains stop there, and those that do so are by request.

You don't need a pound for the trolley either so another bargain.

Fill the Asda trolley up and wheel it back through the streets of Dublin 😉

Just a side note, because I'm not discounting the value of the day trip and doing something different with family or friends on this.

But purely from a duty free perspective, better off booking a 17quid day return to say, Glasgow with Ryanair. 5x50g Amber leaf inboard is 45euro.

I think a carton of Benson is either 40 or 50 euro.

I don't smoke myself but keep an eye for friends. The duty free prices in Dublin airport itself seem a rip off in comparison.

£106 (€122) for for box 600 Benson in Birmingham airport. There's €58 saving already.

btw Ryanair prices have jumped and are €60 a carton

Birmingham is handy as you have Resorts World within the airport/NEC complex, so not worrying on flights.

Holyhead town is an absolute dive, but Holy Island, the island that Holyhead is on off the coast of Anglesey, is absolutely lovely. Its another Howth. If you can get out a bit, then do.

Agreed. Seems to retail for €23. 4 bottles for £12stg is good going.

Booked the Rosslare to Fishguard ferry in July. €60 for the 3 of us is a great bargain.

Is there anything of interest in Fishguard? We only have an hour or so before we need to be back on the ferry.
