Stena Line Duty Free day trips

So with the mid term break coming up, I will be looking for things to do with the family. Stena are doing day trips for Dutyfree at 16 euro per adult. A family of adults and kids is 40 euro. I had an extra adult so I paid 56 euro.

I have just booked a day out for 3 adults and a child. Out in the morning, back that night, about 6 hours on shore. I know Holyhead is a bit of a dive, but it's fine for a day out/pub crawl/ train to bangor bit of shopping.

Well worth it in my opinion and also for stocking up on the fags and booze. There will be limits of course, you need to check that one out yourself.

Soory about putting a negative spin on this but even at that price is it really worth it considering the crap allowances?

Me and the wife are going. If sticking to the duty free allowance, 400 benson is about 120 euro. That's a saving of about 140 euro.

That's the trip paid for and 100 left over. Then cheap booze. Then the value of a family day out.

This IS a bargain. Of course, that is with staying within your duty free allowance. We have a third adult coming so it gets even better

16 quid, into the supermarkets to stock up on cocktail supplies (vermouth, triple sec, tequila) which are horribly overpriced here, few pints and some fish and chips, grab some smokes on the way back and a bottle of Jack Daniels bonded......

Absolutely. Years ago we got the local boneshaker to Bangor. Little bus went round the world. The crack was mighty. Or may go posh and get the train. Or maybe pub crawl. A family day to Dublin zoo would cost more at 19 an adult.

I've done this day trip a couple of times in the last 12 months. On the whole, it's a nice (if long) day out - realistically you won't be off the 8.30pm departure from Holyhead until 12.30am, whatever Stena say about arriving into Dublin at 11.45pm. Park your car for €9 for the day at the port. Duty Free Allowance into Ireland is not generous, but you probably couldn't carry much more anyway. If you know anyone that likes perfume, get it on the boat, I've never found anywhere any cheaper. I've never found that much to do in Holyhead - for a nice day out get the train to Conwy or Llandudno (about £15 day return from Holyhead). The Great Orme / seafront at Llandudno are nice but the town has quite a run-down feel about it. Conwy is a thriving little town with lots of small independent shops and cafes, but be careful as not all trains stop there, and those that do so are by request.

Just a heads up on Tobacco Prices, been doing this trip a lot lately to visit family back home

5x50g Amber Leaf - 65STG

10X50G Lambert & butler - 90STG

For the last few weeks Stena have not had the 10x50 Amber leaf at 90stg or the 5x50g Drum for 35stg

All in all though, it;s a great little day out wit the kids, just dont go to Holyhead, it's a kip, get the train to Conwy as posted above

Thanks very much. Conwy might be it then. Holyhead doesn't really have anything of interest only a few pubs

My mother in law smokes like hell and it will be Benson at less than half price for her. Some downtime with family is good. See where we end up and for that price, well cannot lose

Even better, a cheap ryanair trip and you have a choice of cities and you arrive back mixed with thousands of people and only a few customs officers on duty.

Just a side note, because I'm not discounting the value of the day trip and doing something different with family or friends on this.

But purely from a duty free perspective, better off booking a 17quid day return to say, Glasgow with Ryanair. 5x50g Amber leaf inboard is 45euro.

I think a carton of Benson is either 40 or 50 euro.

I don't smoke myself but keep an eye for friends. The duty free prices in Dublin airport itself seem a rip off in comparison.

I was looking at the day trips on ryanair, Liverpool being my preference, but they were coming in at 20 euro each way per person. So instead of 56 euro, it was coming in at 140 ish. Big Big difference. The auld one smoked carrolls but they are unavailable now, so Benson is the next option. Rollies is just not an option :)

£106 (€122) for for box 600 Benson in Birmingham airport. There's €58 saving already.

btw Ryanair prices have jumped and are €60 a carton

Birmingham is handy as you have Resorts World within the airport/NEC complex, so not worrying on flights.

Its just another option especially for those that are not fond of ferries

600 benson for 122 euro? Are you sure? Wow. I am on on a weeks hols first week april, would consider that as well. That seems like a mistake. Also will look up that resort you mentioned.

Holyhead town is an absolute dive, but Holy Island, the island that Holyhead is on off the coast of Anglesey, is absolutely lovely. Its another Howth. If you can get out a bit, then do.

+1 on this. You can literally step off the ferry and onto the Anglesey Coastal Path, which is world class. If walking's your thing.

For a good day's walking, get a taxi to Trearddur (a few kms from Holyhead) and follow the coastal path back to Holyhead. Distance is just shy of 20km.

Booked the Rosslare to Fishguard ferry in July. €60 for the 3 of us is a great bargain.

Not as a foot pass. There are car day trips but much more expensive.
