Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Feel the need to pee a lot

For weeks now I've had the need to pee a lot. My doctor tested a urine sample which was clear. I did a course of antibiotics to be sure there was no infection. No improvement so I started Betmiga but still no noticeable improvement. I could hold it for six hours or ten minutes but it's always on my mind to the extent that I'm not comfortable going out.

    Any thoughts?

Mod Note - OP, I have moved your thread to the Health Issues forum which probably is more suited to it.

    Local charter now applies.

Male or female? Age? If male , have you had a PSA blood test or DRE test?

What did they test the urine for? Don't take an answer of "it's clear" find out what they were testing for.

Ask for a blood glucose test if they haven't done it already, although even if they have done it already get another one done.

I have no idea. I was asked to bring a urine sample and the doctor said nothing was showing up

What will the blood glucose show?

At the moment I'm sitting here holding myself.

The blood glucose would show if diabetic or not, needing to pee a lot is an indicator for that. Doing a blood glucose test is one of the simplest, quickest and cheapest tests they can do.

Likely something else, but it's a simple thing to cross off. Most useful thing though is to find out what they are actually testing you for at the moment.

I think with the PSA, you need to have been doing it for at least three years as the GP needs to establish a baseline.

Stop eating what you have eaten for those weeks. And eat something else preferable healthy for a few days to see if anything changes so you can narrow down the cause.

Think a pharmacy can do a blood glucose test for you ... or anyone you know with type 1 or type 2 diabetes can test you.

I can't think of anything out of the norm I ate over Christmas, maybe extra chocolate

Drink plenty of water, could be a UTI, urinary tract infection, but the urine test should've shown indicators towards that. If symptoms persist go back to your doctor and ask for blood tests.

Blood glucose may be useful but a urine dipstick shows up glucose and ketones in your urine which may have reassured your GP, particularly if you don't have excess thirst and or weight change often associated with diabetes.

PSA (blood test relating to the prostate) might also be useful, it'll tell gp if it's outside usual range, physical exam of Prostate will also tell them, fifteen/twenty seconds of mild discomfort.

I just have the urge to go and occasionally the tip of the penis will sting but I've no problem or pain passing urine.

What about drinking? Anything different to the norm the last few weeks?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,544 ✭✭✭Ginger83

Two pints of Guinness twice in the last two weeks

Enlarged prostate doesn't necessarily mean you have difficulty, and certainly not pain, passing urine, but it could affect whether you're completely emptying your bladder fully each time or not.

Probably nothing to do with the prostate but if you ask for thoughts, that's one of them.

Along with renal calculi, STDs, cystitis and probably 101 other things, unfortunately your best bet is to see your GP again.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Doubtful its an STI or infection etc. OP not being funny but could it be a mental thing? If you are busy doing something is it still on your mind? Or is it just when you are idle or heading out? Beware. Posters on here are worse than google. They'll have you calling an ambulance

The feeling is there all the time and it occasionally feels like a stinging sensation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭markmoto

Stop messing:) if it's for real go to a GP or another one asap.

I did and I'm trying something called Betmiga which is meant to prolong the need to go but unfortunately I don't notice any difference

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,544 ✭✭✭Ginger83

My local pharmacy said they do a home testing kit. I might try this.

I have just done a test for diabetes and its called a Glucose Tolerance Test , the pharmacy test will only tell you what you blood glucose is at that particular time ,still waiting for my results (takes a week) , hope you get it sorted .

I had those a few times long ago when they knew my blood sugar is erratic and there is diabetes in my immediate familty Do they still take hours?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,513 ✭✭✭Tony H

About 2 hours , take bloods after overnight fasting , drink the glucose , go away and come back in two hours and have more bloods taken

You do any cycling by any chance? I had feeling like that at one stage, eventually worked out it was saddle irritating the nerve or urethra or something like that. Doctor's didn't identify it, I just figured it out by process of elimination!

you say "for weeks now". Do you mean literally 3-4 weeks or has it been ongoing for a period of time (and getting worse)?

If its going on a few weeks, was it ok before hand?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,544 ✭✭✭Ginger83

Hi i think things are settling down. I did a week on an antibiotic called Keflex so it looks like it was an infection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

It was a little different. Drink the glucose than have blood taken ever half hour for I think 3 hours

when i had it done it was as I said , fasting overnight and bloods taken before glucose and 2 hours later bloods taken again , to be honest every half hour seems more logical , but thats the way my nurse did it , and even more frightening is that she told me there are at least 15 people a month being diagnosed ,

I got my results a few days ago and it was confirmed that it was type 2 , doc put me on 500mg Metformin twice a day

  • Always remember anyone can order this free STI test kit to be posted discreetly to home. It consists of quite a comprehensive swab and blood analysis. Results very rapidly arrive by text.

I know what you're talking about. I'm suffering from this as well. I occasionally take urolithiasis medications, order them from canadian pharmacy online because I already know what it is by specific pain and frequent peeing.

I’ve been meaning of asking for a PSA test from my DR. 50 M and have a need to piss for years. I always put it down to MS but it’s been playing on my mind lately.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,544 ✭✭✭Ginger83

My issue seems to have cleared up well and I can wait up to six hours between toilet visits. If it is helpful to anyone I went on Keflex for a week.

I've had symptoms like this for years and years.

Nearly 10 years ago (aged 28 at the time), I remember it happening overnight, I woke up one morning with a stinging / itching down around the tip of the penis. I'd been drinking the night before but hadn't had sex or done anything out of the ordinary. I've often wondered if it was some filthy nightclub toilet or something. Over the following weeks that went away but I needed to pee more and more often. I've always felt that was the root cause due to the timing but after many investigations consultants are convinced that it's just bladder and not related to anything else.

Went through all the things with GP / consultant. Negative for diabetes, negative for STDs or other infections, prostate fine, tried Betmiga, Oxybutynin and Solifenacin none of which helped, had a number of cystoscopies and other tests and they never found anything.

Eventually the only thing that helped, many years later, was a procedure to inject botox into my bladder to make it less sensitive. Even with that it's far from what I used to consider normal but it's been a bit easier to live with.

It doesn't sound like a big deal but it's hard to overestimate the impact it's had on my life. If I have a glass of water I'll end up peeing about 3 or 4 times over the next hour. Hard to walk any real distance without knowing there are rest stops along the way, planning any and all social activities around availability of toilets (and avoiding drinking and trying to void as much as possible before leaving the house), struggling through the work day when I feel like I need to pee every half hour.

Never had a satisfactory or real explanation but the botox has at least helped a little bit.

Do you need to get the botox treatment every 6 months or so?

Gluten intolerance can cause frequency in bladder control. Also artificial sweeteners. Might be worth trying to eliminate these for a while. Won't have an adverse affect anyway and may solve your problem.

There's a whole world here that's not very well understood.

There's a nebulous condition often labelled chronic or non bacterial prostatitis though it generally has nothing to do with the prostate. Its also probably better described as Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome. Symptoms include urgency to pee, pain in the genitals, weird discomfort and irritation in the tip and a whole range of other symptoms depending on the individual.

The first port of call for doctors and urologists is to look at it as bacterial prostatitis and treat it with anti bionics. If it's non bacterial this won't work. It seems most likely to be somehow connected to Pelvic issues/tightness and neurological pain. Specialist physiotherapy and exercises help many. The drug amitriptyline is also often prescribed.

If you are getting nowhere with the antibiotics I suggest looking into the above. It can be a head wrecking illness with very big impacts on quality of life but as it is "niche" it can be difficult to get the right guidance from your GP etc.
