Javi Gracia to be new Leeds boss.

I agree, but they aren't the rules, so ho hum to them. And I'd like Newcastle win the final, for the pure spectacle of the Geordies going completely mental. But some of the commentators need to rein in their English bias.

There’s a case to be made for Finals to be exempt from suspensions. Pope may never again get an opportunity to play in a final.

Perhaps replace it with a 2 game ban (or 4 games if the suspension was 3 games, one of which was to include the final) in situations where a player is being permitted to play in the final.

It is especially harsh on Pope as his is a 1 game ban but he knew the rules going into Saturday and it was the same for all the other Newcastle and Man Utd players who all did their best not to be sent off (bar Sabitzer). I just don't think you can allow a free pass for finals.

The standard of ref's in the Perm must be the worst in Europe

The weekend you had the Sabitzer leg breaker, Mendy booked in the same game for nothing , The foul against Nunez for getting fouled by Tripper & a linesman staring at Burn as he fly's off the ground into Salah & get no where near the ball & not even give a foul , They where in the only two games i saw ,

Its every week you just have to hope that your team benefits from week to week ,

Its a kick in the nuts for Pope but he knew the rules , He messed up ,it happens but its a red card offence all day long ,

can't agree at all. A suspension is a punishment for the player and the team. Why should their opposition in the final be punished in order to be nice to the guy that got sent off? Why should Newcastles next league opponents be the ones to benefit rather than Man United?

Where I do see a good call, and iirc Uefa did this a while ago, is that yellow card accumulation should be wiped at the semi final stage, so that you can't be banned from the final for getting a yellow card in the semi.

If you are red carded though, and that red card should see you banned, it has to stand.

And yeah, Pope may not get to play in another final - he probably shouldn't have grabbed the ball 40 yards from goal, especially when his team was already two goals down.

I wonder if Man United had one less league game to play and Casemiro was going to miss the final, would there be the same outpouring of grief for him missing the final? Or if Sabitzer had been sent off, would that have seen calls for him to be allowed to play? a

The only reason there is out pouring from the media to let him play is because he is a high profile English player

Gary Lineker started this shite about Pope being let off on MOTD last Saturday night.

Tbf even Alan Shearer looked a bit embarrassed by it.

    Says it all really.

All English players who get reds are poor misfortunes who made an honest mistake.

I have a lot of sympathy for players missing finals due to yellows - especially with how easy yellows get handed out in Europe

But Pope grabbed the ball in his arms outside the box because he knew he messed up - complete denial of a certain goal. Not really much to sympathize with there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭It is a Dunne Deal

Yeah its a nothing burger really Newcastle have already said they won't appeal and basically confirmed that Karius will start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,439 ✭✭✭jacool

The only difference here, is that in England, the rule is different to the rest of Europe, in that they have bookings, etc. tied into the competition in which you received them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,072 ✭✭✭✭L'prof

I’d be all for a change to the rule from next season on but I don’t think any exceptions should be made at this stage. Nor will they

The weird thing about this seasons Carabao Cup is that yellow cards in the cup only counted for cup games. So if you got a yellows in two games you miss the next round, as happened for example with Harry Maguire. However red cards crossed competitions as seen with Guimaraes and Pope.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,141 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

England has that rule too yellow cards only count to the competition you are playing in. It is red cards that count for the next game.

If you kept red card suspensions separate, you could end up with a player getting a red in the cup this year and serving the suspension for 3 years if his team keep going out in the first round.

Thanks for all the corrections. Saw this clarification as well

"If a player is handed a three-game suspension in the FA Cup, that will be served across the club's next three matches in domestic competition, whatever tournament that may be."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,599 ✭✭✭✭johnnyryan89

UEFA suspensions can travel over to different competitions, even multiple yellow card suspensions. Sabitzer got three yellows for Bayern in the Champions League and was suspended for United first game against Barca in the Europa League.

English FA and football league like to make up their own rules

Not PL but related to general timekeeping issue….

From the 80th min until the whistle was blown on 95 in the Barcelona game, the ball was in play for less than 6 mins, so about 40% of the time. Whether it’s Europe, PL or international football, it’s shi** to watch.

In the World Cup at the beginning of it they seemed to make an effort to address that but it was criticised by media inexplicably. They were actually trying to do the right thing and it didn’t last. It’s a scourge on the game the way they’ve all become so practised at killing time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,526 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

It wasn't just the media it was also the fans of whichever team was winning suddenly exploding in outrage and conspiracy.

They didn't stop doing it players stopped time wasting we saw longer minutes back in the knock outs also, when players instinctively tried it again

Yup, they kept it up throughout. Sure the final had almost 10 minutes added time at the end of both halves, and then a nice chunk at the end of extra time too.

Why hasn’t it been tried in club football? It’s fairly straightforward. If a team is wasting time add it on. Or else stop the clock.
