I had a long post lost to reply but your argument to start was nothing has improved but some things clearly have.

You added nothing the last time except saying I was ignoring the Negatives of var I wasn't we weren't discussing that untill you moved the goal posts to it.

Of course var has negatives it also has positive (which you ignore) and what the over all effect is from that combination, is a while other discussion also,

That would be this photo I presume

    SmartSelect_20230220-143916_Twitter.jpg

Looks fairly clear they are blocking his view. He may have actually saved it without the two man wall standing in front of him.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Can't say I've heard that one used before to justify offside but every day is a school day I suppose. I've seen less clear cut ones than that ruled out regardless of how far the ball has traveled.

i've certainly seen it said before that distance travelled will have an impact on the 'in the eye line' thing, and also whether the player being there impacts the keepers ability to move for the bal.

TBF I think Gallagher is spot on with all of that.

You can argue they're offside surely but unless he can leap tall buildings at a single bound he ain't saving it as it hit the bar😂

So a goal should be disallowed because of something that "may" have happened? That's a ridiculous thing to say. If VAR isn't dealing in facts then it should not have any input. Speculating about what "may" or may not have happened is not in the remit if VAR and never should be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,652 ✭✭✭✭JRant

Sure, there were two arsenal players in a clear offside position blocking the keepers view. There are numerous examples of such goals being ruled out for offside. If anything it's VAR making the subjective claim that he wouldn't have got to it without the two man wall in front of him.

Because the keeper dives immediately so is clearly not unsighted..

I must say, the random calls in the media for Nick Pope to be allowed to play in the Carabao Cup final are hilarious and patronising.

I do think suspensions should be split.

You shouldn't be able to serve a suspension from an A level tournament like the Premier League in a 2nd rate cup. I know this time it happens to be the final but that's not always the case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,902 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

They weren't whinging when Bruno got a red card in the semi, but could sit that out in the PL and play in the final.

Paper never refused ink or in this case twitter never refused idiocy.

It's only because Newcastle are the 'underdog'. Would never happen if a star player from the 'bigger' club was suspended.

Roles reserved and they'd all be saying Allison should have known better being such an experienced professional at the top of his game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,869 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Alisson wouldn't have played the league cup final anyways! 😉

But yes, I agree. Pope was stupid and got what he deserved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭It is a Dunne Deal

It's because Pope is English if Almiron or someone had been sent off there'd be no such calls. The only bit of sympathy I have for Pope is that he can't play because of an act of stupidity yet Sabitzer can after a horrendous challenge on Faes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,902 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

this is why i found Gallagher's defence of the mara bicycle kick wierd. Yes, Mara didn't mean to send Azpi to hospital, but it was wreckless and injured a player. IMO Sabitzer (was lucky) was not trying to tackle Faes at all, he was trying to flick the ball with the outside of his foot. Faes stretched in, got there first, Sabitzer kicks him in the knee, and is lucky to not get a red. But, its an accident. According to Gallagher, re. Mara, you have to seperate the outcome from the intent.... If Sabitzer had been sent off, I don't think 'accident' would have been a legit excuse.

That's because Popes was a red card offense and Sabitzers wasn't but should have been yellow. It's simple enough.

I find the ESPN Var review that they publish after each round of games is very insightful about why decisions were given, not given, whether they should have been:

Javi Gracia to be new Leeds boss.

I agree, but they aren't the rules, so ho hum to them. And I'd like Newcastle win the final, for the pure spectacle of the Geordies going completely mental. But some of the commentators need to rein in their English bias.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,255 ✭✭✭eigrod

There’s a case to be made for Finals to be exempt from suspensions. Pope may never again get an opportunity to play in a final.

Perhaps replace it with a 2 game ban (or 4 games if the suspension was 3 games, one of which was to include the final) in situations where a player is being permitted to play in the final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭It is a Dunne Deal

It is especially harsh on Pope as his is a 1 game ban but he knew the rules going into Saturday and it was the same for all the other Newcastle and Man Utd players who all did their best not to be sent off (bar Sabitzer). I just don't think you can allow a free pass for finals.

The standard of ref's in the Perm must be the worst in Europe

The weekend you had the Sabitzer leg breaker, Mendy booked in the same game for nothing , The foul against Nunez for getting fouled by Tripper & a linesman staring at Burn as he fly's off the ground into Salah & get no where near the ball & not even give a foul , They where in the only two games i saw ,

Its every week you just have to hope that your team benefits from week to week ,
