Typical bot reply. Ignore what I said and engage in whataboutery. So are you anti western? Is that your problem?

I don't often do this(and i know its not the place for feedback) but is there a chance the Mods could step in here already? We have two very obvious rereg trolls/bots scuttering up the thread for over 130 posts and several days between them now. Surely people have been reporting them like I have?

To be fair one is engaging in debate, the other is, well, not to be unkind...

I disagree, the one “engaging in debate” still posts blatant untruths. But, he’s only been very open about it less than 24hrs. The mods need sleep too.

I don’t think having repeated “debates” (extremely kind word for someone who knowingly lies) with the same person under different usernames helps the forum at all.

Neither does a non debate that's partisan to the point of farce at times FT. Roll on 200k dead Russians etc. And lies are certainly a moving target depending on viewpoint. EG the back and forth a few pages ago about Bandera's treatment by nazi germany. On that particular point the poster was accused of lying, when even the briefest google would reveal actual mainstream historical information showing they were not, or as usual reality was far more complex than easy jingosim. Or take the Ukrainian front. It's barely moved in months, yet both sides are claiming currently mythical counter offensives that show they're winning. Schrödinger's front.

I prefer where possible cogent debate based on realities rather than emotion or partisanship. The latter is how shítshows like this idiotic war kick off in the first place.

I watch this chap from Australia Willy OAM. He's been consistent in his reporting throughout and while he's supportive of Ukraine and against Russia over this invasion, he takes no prisoners as far as spin on either side goes and uses both pro Ukrainian and pro Russian maps of the front to try and clear the fog of war. He's also been on the ground extensively since before the Russian invasion and has quite a few contacts on the same ground from different backgrounds and he's ex military himself. IMHO if you want anything like a balanced take on what's happening he's hard to beat. The vast majority of the rest are either keyboard warriors and/or heavily parrtisan, or in the case of many pro Russian commentators, full on shills for that side*.

*there are plenty of very partisan pro Ukrainian commentators, but they're mostly "civilians". How you spot this IMHO is they vary quite a bit in their talking points and disagree with each other far more often. The very partisan pro Russian commentators don't, to the degree that if one says B, they all do. It's far more scripted. They're also far more on board with the usual conspiracy theory type thinking. I've seen this throughout with pro Russian folks I know. If I want to find out their talking points for today, a quick scan of pro Russian stuff on twitter or RT will have me fully up to speed on said talking points before we meet.

No I asked you. You are a free thinking intelligent human being on a public internet forum about Russia.

Based on your personal approval spiel of countries belonging to their former administrations to make your point of Crimea belonging to Russia. Does Kaliningrad belong to Russia or Germany or Czech?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Fighting Tao

I understand that debate can be good. However, when access to RT (which turns out not to be blocked) is one of the posters biggest issues around this war then they have gone so far down the Russian propaganda rabbit hole that it makes debate impossible because any factual point is ignored by them (RT as an example), and then a new tangent is fired off to deflect.

I think that the main issue with getting decent debate about this war is that one side is completely indefensible due to their actions. Debating on the Russian side now is like debating in support of The Third Reich. Although it could be said that there are some points they could be debated on the German side such as technological advancements made by them. There is nothing from the Russians.

Another interesting fact of Russia. I posted earlier how Russia was built on convict labour.

A secret music type emerged called Chanson. It was based on the idea of the convict looking for freedom or in the end having to give their life for Russia either through a penal fighting battalion or forced labour.

It's believed to have originated with Mikhail Tanich in the Chanson band Lesopoval. Mikhail fought in WW2, received medals. But in 1947 was sentenced to six years in prison when someone reported him for saying German radio equipment and roads were better than Russian ones.

In the eyes of the authorities it was always about the convict labour.

Aye. It does seem to be a thing with "superpowers alright". China is big into convict labour too and the US prison system is heavily privatised and they imprison more of their own people than anywhere on earth. Going back further the Russian empire had both convicts and serfs, the European empires had slaves, indentured or not. The Ottomans ditto. Rome was built on slavery. Superpower = geography, farmland, navigable waterways, a big military to defend and expand it and lots of cheap/free/slave labour.

Do people really believe this tooth-fairy kind of stuff?

I would 100% agree that the second they crossed the border and especially after the horrors they've inflicted on Ukraine and even their own cannon fodder, pretty much nothing is defensible after that. Debate can still be had as to the whys and hows leading up to it and how it's going now, but yes the Russian invasion itself is indefensible.

You can usually @Beasty or @Ten of Swords if they're around and can comment on the situation.

The good thing is that all the sleeper accounts seem to be used up (5-6 year old accounts that become active suddenly to trolls threads).

There should probably be a minimum post limit for some threads but I doubt Vanilla would ever support something like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 287 ✭✭dennis72

The origins of the group are Russian based as was the HSE hack, lots of links associate Russia to this worldwide state sponsored terrorism

Do you have another explanation for this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,761 ✭✭✭macraignil

No longer going to follow this thread myself due to the volume of off the wall gibberish from obviously pro-putin Trollskys. Should have been at least two or three banned from the thread for blatant lies about Ukraine and direct insults to boards members over the last few pages of this thread but boards seem to have fogoten about moderation. Hope Ukraine will be making the russian scum invading their country pay for their crimes over the next few months. Hopefully it will make the Trollskys more embarrassed to be supporting their hero putin on this thread and allow honest discusion on how russia can move on from being terrorists.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,548 ✭✭✭Gerry T

I was feeling the same, ban the trolls or a min post qty/time on boards.

But leaving justs gives the trolls what they want. Shut down debate.

So ive decided to just ignore them, if we all do the same we can get back to discussion
