Then hold off for a year. Then gobble up Uzbekistan. Then wait before they take over Europe? Maybe make a big push for Kazakhstan...gotta get the timing right on that one. Big country. If we are going to argue about what piece of land belonged to whom then it would be prudent to think or contemplate other eventualities.
Modern day Crimea has been a part of Russia since the 1800s. If you wish we can go back to the woolly mammoth and sabre-toothed tiger. Perhaps Crimea will be part of some empire in years to come...but for now and within the last 3 centuries it has been Russian.

Crimea is Ukraine. Crimea became Ukraine when Khrushchev handed it over to Ukraine in an act that disrespected both Crimea and Ukraine. He didn't value either but handed Crimea over to Ukraine to gerrymander soviet support in Ukraine because he feared the exact same thing as Putin fears now, Ukraine becoming a free and open society by the democratic will of the people, if Ukrainians can be free, then Russians can surely be free too, free from the shackles of autocratic despots. When the despotic USSR regime disintegrated after overextending its military reach in Afghanistan, the people of Crimea exercised their democratic will to remain part of Ukraine because within Ukraine, they were more than a pawn to be traded.
Given that history, why would either Ukraine or Crimea want anything to do with Russia? The Authoritarian Kleptocracy that controls Russia do not see either as being Russian, just of strategic value but no more so than when Khrushchev handed Crimea to Ukraine in the first place.
So much deflection in this thread, US did this or that, Iraq, the west, Israel, etc.
The thread is about Ukraine. Ukrainians, much like other former Soviet states want nothing to do with Russia, hence they are the loudest voices in defending Ukraine.
Im still trying to figure out what’s to be gained by either side in this war. Russian claims of NATO expansion, denazification are BS, Putin has shown he couldn’t care less about young Russians being sent to die in Ukraine, and he couldn’t care less about the people in Donbas, which is being reduced to rubble.
NATO are not going to invade a nuclear armed state full stop, hence they’re using Ukraine as a proxy to weaken Russia, which is happening (possibly to avert an invasion of other former Soviet states). I doubt the West has a huge amount to gain from this either, the war is costing the EU many billions and it’s destroying any future Russia may have had. Are China using Russia as a proxy?
I’d be interested to know the real reason for this war (and I don’t buy into it’s the industrial military complex).
