I think people are more talking about who they were sold to rather than them being sold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,108 ✭✭✭jacool

At the start of the season there was nobody mentioning Arsenal as anything like potential rivals for Manchester City.

They had folded last season to fall outside the top 4, and were backable, and backed, at around 100/1 to win the league.

I'd like to be the guy that has over €300 at 110/1. That's 36k there !!

    image.png

They weren't actually rated as a top 4 side.

    image.png

I don't think you can "blame" Man City for the sales to Arsenal. Great business for the Gunners though!

Fans couldn't hound out the person they wanted in

Cancelo has been replaced by Dalot on the Portugese team and by an 18 year old at City.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,155 ✭✭✭✭eh i dunno

Did the fans hire him? Were all Everton fans asked who they wanted as manager? Just because a couple of fans wanted him it doesn't reflect the whole fan base.

He wasn't hounded out because the problems start at the top with an owner who hasn't a clue.

i've seen lots of narrative that yesterday's victory for Arsenal was in a game where Utd went 'toe-to-toe' with them, and simply lost in the last minute. I assume this is fuelled by the fact Neville was spouting it on commentary, saying it harked back to the good old days when these two were perennially at the top of the division.

    it's complete nonsense.

Utd were excellently drilled. they were defensively sound in their back 5, despite losing Casemiro for the game. there were resilient. they had Rashford on the break who caused mountains of problems for 65 minutes or so.

but this was not each team throwing haymakers and one team simply coming out on top at the end.

Arsenal were clearly the superior team, playing in a way that is sustainable for winning lots of football matches, even against good opposition. we can argue that they're further along a process, and ETH has only had 6 months, and that's all quite valid. I'm not in any way arguing against that. I'm also not arguing that Ten Hag isn't doing a good job. in fact, he's doing superbly IMO.

but the narrative that they went 'toe-to-toe' does a disservice to how good Arsenal are, and also, a disservice to where Utd under Ten Hag are actually at. 'Toe-to-toe' is two teams at their apex duking it out. Utd aren't back yet. they're in a far better position that they were, but as they should've done, they got outplayed yesterday, and admirably hung in there through grit, resilience and clinical chance-taking. a draw would've been superb, but wouldn't have reflected the balance of the game.

Utd are on the right track, but Arsenal are a well-oiled machine. it's not a fair fight currently.

Portugal has nothing to do with who Pep choses to play for City ,

Ye Pep has been switching from 3 CB to 4 at the back quite a bit recently, Cancelo got the nod for Southampton & United & then sat out the last two ,

it still doesn't change the fact Pep decided to keep him & get rid of Zichenko

Someone else had an xG there - I think this is the real one from yesterday

    2.64 vs 1.02

Arsenal were all over them for large periods, bar one 10 minute spell when Sky showed possession 75% to 25% in Man Utds favour. Neville continued his "spouting" after the game, saying Arsenal would not win the league, and Roy Keane agreed with him. Cesc, obviously, said that Arsenal had the title, and Jamie Redknapp leaned towards the Gunners, but added that the one team you did not want chasing you down was Man City. After the gap having been closed to 2 points by kick-off it was a massive win for Arsenal. They took 7 points from the three tough games people said they had in Tottenham, and the two top 4 Uniteds.

One reason for caution - When Arsene Wenger led Arsenal to the first of his three Premier League titles in 1997-98, the Gunners were 13 points behind leaders Man Utd at the halfway stage, albeit with a game in hand. They won by 1 point.

No harm in questioning whether it was the right decision or not though. As an Arsenal fan it was a brilliant move. Not sure I'd be feeling so positive about it if I was a City fan. On the other hand, with Haaland and Alvarez coming in there was no doubt that selling Gabriel Jesus was the right move for everyone

Arsenal where by far the better team yesterday I'm not sure anyone could argue that,

United scored twice but i can't remember them creating a chance ? Rashford goal was a bit of magic & a shot form 35 yards, Martinez goal was an Arsenal cock up ,

Arsenal poured the pressure on for most of the game , Like Saliba & Gabriel had very little defending to do compared to there counter parts ,

    Lampard sacked now.

Apparently Everton want Thomas Frank as their new man. I dunno, I think he should stay at Brentford while he has a good thing going for him there with a good structure.

But Pep is perfect so it can't be a bad decision.

It's not often a team that concedes three can be described as having defended brilliantly but I think you could say that about United yesterday. Arsenal had over 60 touches in the United penalty area, an incredible stat, the very feat of not conceding a penalty is note worthy enough.

One of Uniteds biggest failings over the last few seasons was the defensive frailties and its no coincidence that ETH focused on that area. Martinez has been brilliant for us since he joined, he rarely puts a foot wrong, is great on the ball, can tackle, is the right kind of aggressive and he has formed a fantastic partnership with Varane. Casemiro's absence yesterday was a massive difference maker. Im not saying the result would have been different had he played however there were multiple occasions where Partey and Odegaard were able to waltz towards the box unimpeded, he (Cas) is almost like a magnet for the ball and nearly always seems to be in the right place. Arse were fully deserving of their victory and the only blot on their copy book was Arteta behaving like an utter jackass for the duration of the game, you wouldn't see the likes of it at a Junior B county final in Leitrim.

On Lampard, his appointment will surely go down as one of if not the worst appointment in PL history.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 224 ✭✭Bluebb993

Cancelo was happy at City, zinchenko wasn't. Its pretty simple.

I think at the time nobody would have seen this rise from arsenal, a big factory too was arteta having worked with both zinchenko and Jesus both party's knew what they were getting.

Thomas Frank would be mad to take that, unless its financially motivated. I'd imagine Everton could offer up a substantial pay increase over what he is on at Brentford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭Pogue eile

All very true, but again nothing to do with the post I was replying to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,491 ✭✭✭BenK

This not meant as sour grapes against Arsenal or Arteta. They're playing very well, deserved the win yesterday and and deserve to be where they are, and I know people will say that I'm only saying this because Arsenal are doing very well at the moment, and it's bitterness, but Arteta really is insufferable to watch / listen to. I find his behaviour incredibly irritating (not that any Arsenal fans will care). Even when United beat them earlier in the season, he was a really sore loser about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,643 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Lampard had to go really. His win rate of 27% is only beaten by Mike Walker historically.

Thomas Frank would be good but I'd be shocked if he went for it. Tony Cottee reckons they should go for Dyche. I think he's the best they can get.

    Defending starts outside the box,

The conceded 3 , Eddie missed a sitter , Saka hit a post, not sure I'd call that brilliant ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭Pogue eile

You can call it what you want really, I am calling it a brilliant display of organisation and defiance, Den Haag has done an incredible job in a short space of time. I am exclusively taking about the back four here just to clarify, Midfield were completely overrun and that cannot all be explained by Casimero's absence, Arsenal are simply a better team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,278 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

^ maybe something to do with the disallowed goal that was later investigated and found it should have been given

I don’t blame any manager for being angry at losing or even classed as a sore loser it’s better than standing still doing nothing like Lampard

    The internet isn’t for everyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,954 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

The conceded 3 goals it should have been more

Why did the back four allow them 60 touches in the box ? why drop off so much that they get into the box that often ,

Arsenal first goal was a joke United back 4 went to sleep ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,242 ✭✭✭ceegee

Wasn't the finding that var shouldn't have overturned the referees decision rather than finding the goal should have been allowed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,145 ✭✭✭purplepanda

Arsenal won that league with 3 games to go, they lost the final 2 "dead rubber" games, it's not as if they actually won it in the very last game of the season?

If you think Lampard is bad just imagine how bad Rooney would be, the guy isnt fit to run a schoolboy team.

Yeah ETH has made an improvement to the defence overall. I posted the same in here a few months back, and that I was surprised that he chose to improve the defence first and then the attack later. I guess one is a byproduct of the other too. Maybe it was a personnel improvement too, but the defence has largely the same players playing this season and last season with Martinez in for Maguire the only real long lasting change.

But I don't think he deserves credit for how Man Utd defended yesterday. The opposite. Time and time again, Martinelli & Saka were 1v1 on AWB & Shaw. That shouldn't be allowed happen so often, and both defenders kept standing off of the attackers which leads me to think that it was by design. Both full backs got roasted. Maybe it was good attacking play to isolate those players but ETH didn't do anything (that I saw) to rectify the problem.

Overall, ETH deserves praise for improving the defence but yesterday was not one of those days IMO.

Kane has said he would be open to signing a new deal with Spurs. Very Le Tissier like staying with a lower ranked team when his talent demands that he should be playing at the highest level.
